This is a very nice piece. Galadriel and Celeborn have always been my
favourite couple of the Elves, but you shed new light on their burden by
comparing them to Finarfin and Earwen. I don't think I would have ever
thought to do. The metaphor of the Sea as the thing that separates the two
loves (C&G, not F&E) and draws Galadriel back to the present and away from
her memories of the woods of Doriath... well, it was both well conceived and
well executed. It was nice to see something about this couple from the
Noldor point-of-view, instead of from the Sindar.

You really hit the ugly side of Maeglin's character well here. I never
thought much about the origin of Sting (or Orcrist or Glamdring, for that
matter), but it does have a sort of symmetry to it that something that
should prove that dangerous both to the spiders of Mirkwood and to Shelob
and her webs should come from the hand of someone so filled with hatred as
Maeglin. The fact that Maeglin's creative impulse came out of his jealous,
possessive love for Idril and his hatred for Tuor and just about everyone
else only makes the symmetry the more powerful.

It goes to show that even evil is possible of creating something that might
be used for good, and it recalls (in my mind at least) the statement of
iluvatar to Melkor, that good would come out of what Melkor intended to be
evil. To voice a more Biblical sentiment, it reminds me of Joseph telling
his brothers that they had intented his slavery in Egypt for evil, but God
used it for good. That to me was the overriding message I took away from
this little piece. The fact that you brought it out without even mentioning
the

An ending - but not a final one, I hope. Duty keeps Celeborn for now, but he
will sail - accompanied by his grandsons and Glorfindel, when the time is
right. This is just . . . well, I am lost for words. It is beautiful and
satisfying and tragic and philosophically well-thought out and superbly
characterised and just generally delicious. I can understand Celebrian's
anger and Celeborn's accommodation with the fate that faces him and
Galadriel - and see why Celebrian was targeted for attack - and I just love
majestic Elrond. I've just spent the whole afternoon rereading the entire
thing - just to check out if it was that good all the way through - and it
is. There isn't a single bit I would want changed. It is an excellent
representation of your talent and a writer and a thoroughly satisfying read.

I find this to be deliciously vicious, both in a self-recriminatory way on
Nerdanel's part, but also as a certain form of payback to the god of our
small fictional universe. It highlights just why I absolutely loathe, with a
capital 'L', Tolkien's writing about childbearing among Elves. The fall of
the House of Feanor (indeed, much of "The Silmarillion") is brought about by
Nerdanel's fear of giving too much of herself to the children in her womb
and going out like a light, just like Miriel did. Thus her children are all
too much their father's children in spirit to resist his manipulations and
madness and it is All Her Fault. I sense the sublimated expectation that
women lose themselves in their children informing this particular
construction of what motherhood means, and as is my wont, shudder.

So while, in a way, there is nothing I would rather read less of than a
woman aching to dissolve herself in her children just because she can (or
rather could have), this is an entirely too plausible situation, and Kielle
is to be commended for writing a story that brings out the logical
consequence of Tolkien's construction of elven maternity. In a sense, this
portrayal of motherhood makes up for the cosmic injustice (by comparison,
from a mortal standpoint) of the fact that Elven women have no fear of an
unwanted pregnancy.

For extra special bonus points, the final paragraphs nicely conform to one
of my favorite descriptions of shame: it's that feeling riveted to yourself
in your very exposure, where that riveting is the realization that there was
never any way of not being only this exposed thing, a sort of gross and
inescapable excess one is desperate to be rid of. Given how Tolkien writes
Elves, it's a particularly apt analysis of shame. One gets the sense that
Nerdanel understands this, and it truly is horrific-so much for healing in
Valinor. Bravo, Kielle!

A quite fascinating history of the Ring and its temptations; it gives
revisionism a good name. I like the idea that the Ring only mirrors or
echoes what is in the heart of the tempted one-in this way, they are
defeated and corrupted by truth itself, even as Sauron used truth to
overthrow Denethor's mind. As for Sauron... narcissism is too mild a word
for this rather twisted relationship. I do wonder how the last chapter fits
with Sauron's lessons about embodiment-it's been in a human before, so one
would think it would know something of the nature and feeling of being
embodied. For those who like their stories linear, this one is nicely bent,
but it holds interest throughout and thanks to the episodic nature of the
tale, a strict progression is not necessary. This won't be everyone's cup of
tea, but I found it quite interesting.

This is an excellent look at how Smeagol might have dealt with his murder of
Deagol in the early days. That sense of love and hate together is very well
drawn, and one can easily see how Smeagol would be driven mad by his guilt,
neither fully able to expiate it or to escape it. It would just fester like
a splinter in his mind, and the Ring would twist its way further and deeper
into his psyche. Already, I like that Smeagol can't even question that there
is this second voice in his mind-it's just the way things are already. The
art of the half-truth and rationalization he's already mastered, despite
being nearly sick over it. Very well done!

I fear I've fallen quite behind with this story, and haven't had time to
catch up. However, I would be remiss if I didn't point out the Gimli-Elanor
interaction. I laughed so hard over that I nearly wet myself. "Bush!" And
Gimli has such great dignity with her, it's really quite delightful. One day
I shall catch up-really, I will! In the mean time, it's a fun Fourth Age
romp.
