A twisted knife of a story - I wonder how Elmo would have felt if returned
to his body in Valinor, when he met Olwe again. Young Celeborn is a delight
- and it is all an adventure to him. He must have been a tremendous

man (half youth, really), sore at himself for letting things go badly.
Obviously this story is a must-read for Eomer fans, but it's also a lot of
fun for those of us who like to see any of our favourite characters as
something more than mythic symbols. Because even if the Red Book has mythic
elements and the truth is, ahem, exaggerated, it's still based on real
people (working within Tolkien's conceit, here). And real people still get
irritated when the rain gets in their boots, or when a root pokes in their
back all night long or (in this case) when they're locked away unjustly and
can't feel the fresh air on their face. This vignette brings that side of
Eomer's character to light very nicely.
The original character was also a joy. He fits very well within what we know
of Rohirric culture, and I can see him growing up to become a Rider. But for
the moment his own juvenile immaturity (and maturity) draws attention to the
fact that, while Eomer may be a man, he is still a young man and still very
human. Very well done, Tiana.

in their relationship... Grima must have been repulsive indeed. That very
fact makes his later actions a bit more understandable if not forgiveable.
The cultural tidbits such as the scarcity of apples are very well done. I
can see these two developing into the characters we see in The Lord of the
Rings, yet they also are different enough toi reflect the yewars that will
pass before we reach the War of the Ring.

Merry sounds a bit too old for his years here, but I do like the way the lad
thinks! Very astute of him to find a way to turn Otho's dirty dealings

the backbone that would later let him stab the Witch-king just because Éowyn

Lindalėriel uses the line "I wonder what Frodo and Sam are doing?" to pull
the reader through those last hours, until the question can be asked: "I

I liked the dilemma that Mariposa played out here. When things are at what
seem their worst, sometimes we do wish our loved ones dead, because we can't
think it would be worse for them than what they (and we) are enduring. And
afterwards, when things improve, that wish can bring shame, and isn't easily
divulged.

fascinating was the hints at Rohirric culture we get through the ceremony

to. The terror of facing Sauron, the hubris of asking her to prepare a
victory celebration, the threat of what her life would be like if Pharazon
survived and she didn't... all of this is palpable. I particularly liked the
fact that you answered one of my major questions about the "Akallabeth": why
didn't Elendil take her on the ships, given how close of family she was?
I think my favourite part, though, was the affection she had for Isildur.
This seemed tragic and fitting, and it was lovely how she helped him steal

scenario while attempting to undermine it". That one line made me very
skeptical, and probably kept me from enjoying this piece for at least a
year. I barely knew what h/c was, let alone what a "standard scenario" might
be. After fairly length discussions with the author (Dwim and I can both be
very long-winded when the mood strikes us), I now see what she means, I
think. Under what circumstances would homosexual sex be acceptable in a
patriarchal community like the rangers? What happens if you transgress those
bounds? What consequences would there be to pay?
With subjecct matter as deep as this a lesser author might become bogged
down. Yet there's much more to "Semper Fi" than its theme. This piece gives
a wonderful glimpse into family life among the Dunedain and the structure fo
command within the Rangers. The erotic scenes are, well, extremely erotic,
the deramatic tension stays sharp throughout, and the ending interaction
between Halbarad and Aragorn (who are not the romantic partners,
incidentally) was spot on. Here is Aragorn who is a commander but not an
unsympathetic one, Halbarad the ranger who "falls" but still maintains his
honour by being willing to accept the consequences, and a host of original
characters who complement Halbarad's struggle.
The whole sexual structure reminded me of homosexuality among the ancient
Greeks, where (if my understanding is correct) some form of homosexuality
was acceptable at a certain age, but the men were eventually supposed to set
this aside when the time for marriage came. This is definitely the case with
Halbarad and Dwim's original character whose name I am drawing a blank on,
and it captures quite nicely the problems that might result when someone is
unable to obey any society's sexual expectations. A very enjoyable read.

is well done of course, but I think my favourite aspect of this piece is the
way that young Samwise and the Gaffer interact. The Gaffer clearly doesn't
want Sam to read, and Sam clearly loves stories -- that's canonical -- but
you managed to have these two in the same story without making either one
seem dysfunctional. The Gaffer may not be that expressive in his emotions
toward Sam, but he obviously loves the boy and wants what is best for him.
To get that across takes skill.
I also really liked how Bilbo was surprised that Sam couldn't read. Of
course, being from the upper-middle class, it would never occur to him that
boys wouldn't be at least literate.

man (half youth, really), sore at himself for letting things go badly.
But for
the moment his own juvenile immaturity (and maturity) draws attention to the
fact that, while Eomer may be a man, he is still a young man and still very
human. Very well done, Tiana.

skeptical, and probably kept me from enjoying this piece for at least a
A very enjoyable read.

of Sam growing up: a child who grows up privileged, whose father wants him
to become book-learned, but who has no interest or aptitude in that kind of
thing. The foil is an effective way of developing Sam's character; I
particularly liked Elanor's wisdom in talking some sense into her husband.

kidding. I can very easily see Sam's friends writing a song like this, and
it had me laughing -- and tapping my foot.
