This piece has a very nice symmetry to it. In the first half we see the
comfort that a fire can provide: companionship, warmth, a cooked dinner. All
of the Fellowship members (except perhaps the hobbits) are used to long
journeys through the wilderness, and i'm sure by now those words "tonight we
shall venture a fire" bring a special joy to their hearts. So the first
paragraph certainly touches on that common joy.

But the second uses the same symbolism of the fire, but to very different
effects. The sparks are short-lived calling mortality to mind. That made me
think of Legolas, who seems like he hasn't journeyed beyond Mirkwood much.
He is seeing the aches and pains and perhaps injuries or even dangerous
near-death experiences on this frist leg of a journey. And it also reminded
me of Boromir, who is struggling with his temptation with the Ring. In true
Numenorean fashion this seems to be a struggle with the weakness of Men
brought on by their mortality: great captain he may be, but Boromir knows he
and Gondor will not live forever. And the fact that light draws attention to
both the good and the bad (symbolised here by the Ring) was well-told as
well. Light might bring hope when surrounded by dark, but only if hope is
there to be illuminated. Otherwise it draws your mind to baser feelings.

And now that I have written more than twice again as many words as the
drabble, I think I should stop. :^) You packed a lot inot this one. Keep up
the good work, Ann.

Anyone who has ever lost a loved ones knows how painful it can be to come
across reminders of that loved one when you don't expect them. If Denethor
did not wear many colours at all before he met Finduilas (an idea I can
easily accept), even sombre ones would only remind him of her.

I particularly liked the thoughts you gave us about her mantle, how he
wanted to give her the stars but recognised he couldn't. It seems to be an
idea that he would have thought. (In fact I worked it into my story "Pride
and Despair", though I hadn't read this drabble at the time.)

This drabble conveyed a lot more than what was literally written in it.
Perhaps I am reading what isn't there but something about it prompted those
thoughts. Very well done.

This one gave me a definite "awwww" moment. I know some like to think of
Denethor simply as someone who was a cold, calculating ruler, and that side
of him was definitely there. But I also think that he genuinely loved
Finduilas (as Tolkien writes in the appendices), and that she would bring
out a more gentle side of him that we see more in his son Faramir. After
all, the only time we really see him is when he's in grief over Boromir, and
years after Finduilas' passing. Perhaps that's just my wishful thinking,
wanting to think him with a softer and ever-so-cuddly side, but you've
captured that aspect of his personality marvellously.

face! The laughter of Finduilas... I can hear it. But what really gets me
about this drabble is your characterisation of Finduilas. I can't imagine
Denethor marrying any other sort of women, who was not so blinded by passion
that she forgot about duty, or the other way around.

I have seen many comments from various people in the fandom that humour
stories revolving around the Mordor-as-bureaucracy theme are overdone.
Indeed, this type of story is hard to do in an original format. But "A Very
Dark, Very Wet, and Very Miserable Morning" is different. There is an
element of the bureaucracy here, but the real humour doesn't lie in
parodying our own world, but the idiosyncracies of Middle-earth. Shelob's
venom, the call of the gulls, slave revolts in Nurn... it was all very well
grounded within Tolkien's world, but also askew. In the books (and movies,
apparently) the forces of Mordor quarrel alot, but somehow Abunai seems to
be in a class of his own. And he has that slight haughtiness that one would
expect from someone high in the hierarchy of Mordor. The Mouth of Sauron
also was richly done. He doesn't seem phased by anything but Abunai's
mishaps certainly get to him. The last line ("Oh yes. This morning could
definitely be salvaged.") was particularly priceless.

Oh, this *was* an enjoyable romp through both bookverse and movieverse --
not to mention an alternate universe that is entirely worthy of the name
"Thundera Tiger". From many of her other vignettes such as "A Forgotten
Casualty", "A Very Dark, Very Wet, and Very Miserable Morning" and the
conversation between Elrond and Glorfindel about the make-up of the
Fellowship (whose name I have forgotten), I should have known to expect her
to take a very literal view of things, and expose the folly contained
therein.

The conversation between Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn reminds me of nothing
so much as a conversation between members of various internet boards who
perhaps have a bit too much time on their hand. In particular, it made me
think of the conversations I've seen aabout just why at Helm's Deep Gimli's
axe had hewn naught but wood since Moria, when there was Amon Hen in
between. What was he doing, exactly? Spitting on the orcs? biting at their
ankles? But Gandalf's frustration echoes what I imagine would be Tolkien's:
you're missing the point!

And that's precisely what made this story work so well. There's a serious
sequence of events being recounted here, but Gandalf can't get it out
because he keeps being interrupted. And the interactions between Legolas,
Aragorn, and Gimli (especially Legolas and Gimli) was priceless.
Particularly Legolas's reference to "strange dwarven customs"... shades of
WTRWS, perhaps?

Perhaps the thing that impressed me the most with this piece is the author's
note. And it doesn't really have anything to do with the meat of the piece!
But it had never occurred to me that Legolas and Gimli wouldn't know about
boromir's last hours. Of course the points of bookverse that Thundera brings
out are there and true and make good sense, but it would never have occured
to me to question that point! I suppose that is proof of a true purist. ;-)
(Which in my mind is a good thing...)

Beyond that... the discussion here is purely Socratic. It reminded me of one
of Plato's dialogue, except for an important point: neither Legolas's nor
Gimli's side is a straw man that exists solely to bring out the points of
the other sides. (That's too often the case in classical dialogues for my
taste.) And beyond that, the two are actually having a serious philosophical
debate. If I may recast the question a little, the two are essentially
arguing over whether evil (or conversely, good) has an essence beyond its
manifestation, or is it only a characteristic of the things that manifest
it. That is, is there such a thing as good and evil that exists
independently of whether something exists to be influenced by good or evil.
Which is probably one of the most fundamental philosophical points that
there are to debate.

Beyond that, you actually make it enjoyable. The tit-for-tat of Legolas and
Gimli, and Aragorn's reluctance to get involved was simply priceless. Would
that classical philosophy in the real world was this entertaining!

This is an interesting piece and yields nice insight both onto how elves
view time compared to other mortals (such as dwarves), and also how Legolas'
continuing friendship with mortals has made him think more like one.
However, there is something in the style that just doesn't feel quite
dwarvish to me. I know that Gimli was more skilled at words than most
Dwarves, but I would have liked to feel a little more gruffness, even if it
is mellowed by age -- it should still be there. Perhaps this is my own
personal preference, though. The content at least was beautifully done, and
if it was coming from someone besides a dwarf (Aragorn, perhaps, or even
Imrahil) it would work really well.

This sparkles like the fireworks it describes. A wonderful overarching
description of the joy of the gathering and the wonder and beauty of the
fireworks. There is a wonderful sense of motion in this as well with the
fireworks bursting, dancers spinning and the children chasing the settling
sparks. A tight, well written and beautiful drabble.

"Then when every breath has been held with the joy of those stars, they
fade, only to be rekindled with the lighting of the next wick."

This is the essence of a firworks display, the joy, the fading and the next

This piece had some excellent characterisation of Gimli. I liked the fact
that he was concerned he was becoming more dwarvish, and that it was him who
decided to explore the cave (and that Legolas overcame his apparent
claustrophobia in Aglarond out of friendship). An interesting interlude.

Illyria is one of the finest authors in LOTR fanfiction. The fact that she
isn't even a native English speaker absolutely astonishes me. She has a
mastery of the language and a skill with words that I have rarely seen in
any writer and a depth of feeling and empathy that I can't resist falling
into.

This story, Sunstar, is not one of her better known pieces, but it is my
hands down favorite. Not too wallowing in angst, but with exquisitely judged
scenes and phrases that describes the maximum longing and heartbreak. She
brings forth a story that is so perfect that I would not change one word of
it, though she credits me with helping her to find what was missing. Indeed,
even when I first read it in its previous incarnation, I could not believe
anyone could write something that so got into my heart, that was such a
perfect and heartwrenching depiction of Sam at the end of Rosie's life. The
love they shared is honored in this tale, blessed and sanctified and it
touches the heart. Rarely to I find such an incredible expression of love
between them, and one that doesn't present Frodo as competition or the
'right' one for Sam instead, but as a dear and beloved friend who never got
to learn the treasure that is a beloved wife. I can't speak highly enough of
this story. It is lyrical and breathtaking and I wish one day to write
something that touches someone as powerfully as Sunstar touched me.

While many people seem to have issues with stories in which Frodo is
portrayed as having had a romantic interest in his life, there is NO
reasonable argument they could use against this gorgeous story. It is, quite
literally, THE story of Frodo's love and a more credible and heartbreaking
take on this situation, I can't even imagine.

The OFC is a lady whose history and situation are cleverly researched and
believeable, as is her relationship with Frodo. If you think this one is a
Mary Sue, then you don't know what a Mary Sue is. Lily is a delightful and
heartbreakingly credible addition to canon. Her relationship is so well
thought out and so sizzling that you find your heart breaking for her! But
in such a memorable and poignant way.

I am very fond of fanfic romances, which probably makes me unique among
Frodo fans, especially where they allow me the chance to live vicariously
through a character. This one is so well crafted that she really could have
simply been one that was overlooked by the original author. Lily is woven
cleverly into the story while making no changes to the story nor any
significant ones to the personalities suggested in it (or at least, no where
near as significant as the changes most fanfic makes). The care the author
puts into this story makes her OFC's inclusion seamless and delightful. I
can't possibly recommend this story enough. It is the answer to what I have
always dreamed of for Frodo and it is a bloody good read at that. Thank you
Cuthalion!

though we get them only in glimpses and side-views. The uncertainty of the
fate of everyone in Minas Tirith is well-portrayed, as well as the trauma of
both healers and patients alike as they deal with an impossible situation.
And as if a siege and the omnipresence of darkness and apocalypse were not
enough, there is also the petty politics and bureaucracy that render the
painful decisions of triage even more unbearable. I will be interested to
see how this turns out, whether Valacar is vindicated or not, whether the
strange whittler claims a victim or not. Aliana has given us a very
enjoyable, if sad, tale, and I look forward to its continuation.

Good depiction of Frodo's exhaustion, his being stripped down to nothing but
a resolve he knows he may not be able to fulfill. For those liking Frodo
angst, give this one a read.

A very difficult moment in the slow journey of Frodo back from Mount Doom to
the Grey Havens; one could imagine an episode like this, despite the hobbity
resiliance that is more often shown in the post-war Minas Tirith chapters.
The effects of the Ring on him are brought out very clearly in a sort of
survivor's guilt, almost, or post-traumatic stress. Whatever the cause, the
utter alienation of will that is the Ring's ultimate effect upon a person
lingers and clearly will take a long time to heal. The theodicy is nicely
handled, going back to the root of pity and the larger context of Frodo's
repeated choices for pity and mercy that prove more powerful and defining
than the final act in the saga. Aratlithiel puts it well when she has Merry
and Aragorn claim that it was the Ring that claimed Frodo, not Frodo who
claimed the Ring in the Sammath Naur.

A very interesting moment, one that fits, I think, with a Maia's distance
from mortal relations and Gandalf's curiosity. Gandalf won't have children,
and in a sense, fatherhood is a mystery, as is the turn of fate that makes
Denethor Faramir's father.

This was a neat little Fellowship gap-filler, and a nice moment of sharing
across cultural boundaries. Elven magic is always a bit of a tricky thing to
handle, because it usually doesn't come in an obvious form, but the idea of
a charm bracelet done in this manner strikes a nice balance between being
too "artificial" and being simply atmospheric. It's tangible, but cause and
effect are not immediately evident, and I think that works well.

I like the device of the letter to show a sort of schizophrenia in Boromir
that he cannot reintegrate.
