Highest possible praise: I hate shopping, but I quite enjoyed this story.
The bit about the stuffed toys was certainly a nice touch, as was Gimli's
having to constantly haggle in reverse to get merchants to accept money from
the hobbits. Priceless!

With apologies, I'm going to reiterate parts of some older reviews. What I
enjoyed about this story was how we are shown the distorting effect the
palantir has on what Denethor sees and hears around him. This really comes
to the fore in the final chapter, even though the palantir is mostly absent.
All the previous build-up pays off and the reader does not bat an eye at how
Denethor behaves and views matters, particularly Gandalf. Aralanthiriel
keeps things short and focused in each chapter, and the only thing I truly
miss is that awful council where Denethor sends Faramir away. She gives a
good lead-in the chapter that would precede it, but ultimately doesn't show
it. Perhaps another time and another vignette?

While there are many fine points to admire, doubtless finer than this one, I
must say: it is so nice to see a post-Black Gates fic in which Pippin isn't
unconscious in Ithilien already! In which he actually is conscious to speak
despite the injuries. Anyhow, moving on. Pippin, despite his injuries, shows
his maturity here, his thoughts going to Frodo and Sam who are more badly
hurt than he, rather than remaining focused on himself. I liked that bit of
intimacy of Pippin brushing curls out of Frodo's eyes because he knows Frodo
hates that—it's a nice, understated way of showing both affection and his
concern for them. I also liked Gimli, and that exchanges between Gimli and
Aragorn, as it gives a sense of how badly hurt Pippin is, that he definitely
needs watching for all that he at least is conscious.

I quite liked this, particularly those last three, matching lines. The title

it's neither fatherhood alone nor kingship alone, but the two together that

An entertaining vignette that has me almost liking Glorfindel—a feat, since
I don't care for him much at all. Loved the humorous description of
Glorfindel on a mission to enjoy himself, which amounts to relating his
efforts in a manner not unfitting of a report. This opener rather set the
tone:
"Before him scattered household folk and guests alike; even the darkness
seemed to part way as with such legendary strength and singleness of purpose
did he travel. His destination: the Hall of Fire; his goal: to have some
fun."
I'd not picked up on the possibility of lingering resentment of Glorfindel
on Sam's part, so it was nice to see that angle put into play here.

In any other piece this would feel convoluted, and if I were asked to beta
this (again, in any other piece) I would reach for the (metaphorical) red
pen immediately. But somehow this slightly backwards way of saying things
seems very fitting in a piece about the Rohirrim and the final faltering of
hope for a future. It is certainly Beowulf-esque; the author acknowledges
that that epic served as an inspiration forthis piece, and I can definitely
see that. But it's not at all unfitting that the Rohirrim would channel that
Nordic spirit. This vignette was very well done, very compelling.

is one of the few pairings that I can see plausible in Tolkien's canon --
not that he particularly meant it, more that he didn't close the door on
this pairing. The main problem (the fact that Boromir didn't come often to
Rohan) is addressed nicely here. The simple details (the hand on a shoulder,
Boromir's saddle) only enhance the simple beauty of this piece.

cultural notes -- the things that Frealaf sees ruined in Meduseld, for
example -- are brilliantly done, as is his surprise to see his kinswoman so
soon. And both of their grief at the loss of so much of their family,
coupled with Brytta's simple insistence that life must go on, was so well
told. This could almost be a moment in the Ring War, the characters are told
that warmly, but the fact that it is framed by another, probably more
obscure conflict (at least to the minds of many readers, myself included)
made the story all the more a joy to read. Well done.

Gimli and Eomer is not a pairing that I would have dreamed up (probably
because they are both so often "paired off" with other people in the fanfic
I read -- Gimli with Legolas, or chaste love for Galadriel; Eomer with
Lothiriel). Nevertheless, there it is... and rereading the books, I can see
the chemistry you refer to and build on here.
The mention of the blood and the taste of ash is so uber-masculine, and that
seemed very fitting for races like the Rohirrim and Dwarves. The kiss was
very well done, probably one of the most erotic kisses that I have ever
read. And Gimli's and Eomer's frustration (and attempts to explain the
situation) when they are interrupted! I'm sure that Eomer wanted to be the
one to tend to Eomer, but I really liked that you didn't let their desires
rule them. The Rohirrim were at war, after all, and Eomer (as the de facto
second-in-command of the Rohirrim, and the highest ranking officer in
Aglarond) would have had other things to see to. That one move kept the
piece very strongly in character for me.
And then Saruman's taking the "matter in hand"! And his being interrupted...
the Epilogue was hilarious all the way through. I really liked this piece.
Though perhaps there's room for a sequel? Maybe a moment between Eomer and
Gimli in Minas Tirith, when Gimli educates Eomer as to why Galadriel is more
beautiful than Arwen could ever be.

category, and "Translation" certainly holds it own. I like the idea that the
Rohirrim had a written script. They were a primarily oral culture, of
course, but you can't run any kind of a kingdom without *some* sort of a
script. Merchants and tax agents need to keep books, contracts deeds of sale
need to be written out, and inscriptions may need to be made on relics and
tapestries. And to compare the scratches on Eowyn's arm to the scratches on
a sheet of parchment... that was simply brelic.
I won't even go into the kiss between them, and the moment "after" in the
second part. Not feeling particularly eloquent after reading it. ;-)
Faramir/Eowyn shippers, this is one that you should all read. Heck, I'll go
one better: if you haven't read this one, you're doing yourself a
significant disservice.

I think this was probably my favourite part of this drabble. It is just so
Eomer, that he would be that cocky and fun-loving, but also resilient. He
came shining through in this one -- as did Theodred (at least how I imagine
him; canon doesn't tell us that much): still fun-loving, but very brotherly
and more mature. Age, and the gruesome nature of war, will do that to you.
All in all, this was a very nice drabble. Well done, Cheryl.

Dernhelm persona in quite those terms, but it's true on several levels.
First, the name itself, "Dernhelm" -- hidden face. As matron of a house she
learned to hide her true self and present only what was acceptable. Then
there's the fact that it taught her to deny her emotions and be cold,
mechanical, whatever it took to protect herself from Wormtongue's
machinations and the more ordinary dangers of family lives. I loved the
image that that line seemed to create, and that the rest of this drabble
supported: a bird so strong that she took what other people used to restrain
her, and used to her own advantage. It reminds me in a strange way of the
Bible story of Samson wrecking the temple. Luckily for Eowyn it turned out
better for her.

exception: she captures the moment when Hama demands that the Three Hunters

for Gandalf, "a king must have his own way in his own hall", Gimli's
reluctance to part with his axe... all of these are straight out of the
books, and the fact that Nessime made room for them makes this drabble feel

But I wonder... what was it, exactly, that Hama held as dear as Gandalf's
staff? Was it his love of Rohan and the sense that Gandalf seemed to bring
hope? (I imagine that Hama was glad to see Gandalf in the days when Rohan
was darkening, when Gandalf took Shadowfax.) Is it his loyalty to Theoden
first, and not to Wormtongue? Or perhaps just the simple autonomy to make
his own decisions without being burdened by oppressive and unnecessary
edicts? It could be any of these things (or maybe one of a few others), but
now I want to know what Nessime had in mind!

This is great. With the economy of words necessitated by a drabble the
author has told us a great deal about dwarves - that they would 'flee' with
the same dedication with which they work, and be both sentimental and
serious - and created a memorable character in Thrain, heir to Durin the
Deathless, inspired leader of his people.

His destination: the Hall of Fire; his goal: to have some
fun."
I'd not picked up on the possibility of lingering resentment of Glorfindel
on Sam's part, so it was nice to see that angle put into play here.

seems very fitting in a piece about the Rohirrim and the final faltering of
hope for a future. It is certainly Beowulf-esque; the author acknowledges
that that epic served as an inspiration forthis piece, and I can definitely
see that. But it's not at all unfitting that the Rohirrim would channel that
Nordic spirit. This vignette was very well done, very compelling.

Maybe a moment between Eomer and
Gimli in Minas Tirith, when Gimli educates Eomer as to why Galadriel is more
beautiful than Arwen could ever be.

exception: she captures the moment when Hama demands that the Three Hunters
and Gandalf part with their weapons. The use of the Rohirric name "Greyhame"
for Gandalf, "a king must have his own way in his own hall", Gimli's
reluctance to part with his axe... all of these are straight out of the
books, and the fact that Nessime made room for them makes this drabble feel
all the more authentic.
Or perhaps just the simple autonomy to make
his own decisions without being burdened by oppressive and unnecessary
edicts? It could be any of these things (or maybe one of a few others), but
now I want to know what Nessime had in mind!

even when it's not popular. The whole thing was well-told, but the ending
especially made me smile.

Interesting, but sadly disappointing.
