And once again, I am denied an explanation of why on earth Aragorn
originally dared the mines of Moria. Don't think I didn't notice that
evasion! But at any rate, this takes up nicely from "While the Ring Went
South" in style and substance. It's fun to see those familiar passages given
a reworking, so that they look and feel different. I particularly admire the
way new dialogue is inserted into scenes in such a way as to conform and set
up the original and it still all makes sense. The shifting alliances within
the Fellowship, as they bicker and ponder and attempt not to give their
fears too free a reign (or to allow others' fears to do so) is interesting,
and it's really nice to have a story where every Fellowship member gets to
carry the story for awhile.

This is a nice gap-filler, and Pippin's voice feels very natural. I
particularly liked Frodo's faking a stumble to take Sam's mind off his fears
and give him a sense of purpose during the long trek through Moria, and
Merry's efforts to make light of their situation sounds just right to me.
It's a short story, but everyone gets a little moment to speak and
contribute a little, in an understated manner, towards the author's goal of
showing that it's caring for each other (and even for the dead) that helps
the Fellowship through its trials.

A surprisingly sympathetic examination of Gríma, which nevertheless does not
flinch from portraying him as the cowardly, weak creature he is, hating all
and everything that reminds him of himself, yet unable to summon the
inhumanity to be utterly hateful. He and his double, in the form of Lotho,
and their mutual hatred of each other, throw light upon each other,
resulting in a rather unexpected but deeply touching scene that ends in one
of the more horrific acts of selfish mercy ever. This has to be one of the
best examinations of Gríma I've ever read, one that shows his strengths in
his weaknesses, takes advantage of culture shock, and uncovers his
ultimately misguided sense of fellow-feeling. The story does justice to his
complexity, and to Gandalf's observation that once he was a man—he still is,
and that shows. Almost, you can believe that Gríma might have been able to
come back if he'd gotten free of Saruman first. As an added bonus, we see
Saruman's easy opening bid to get himself into the Shire, and convince
others to follow his orders—dwimmercrafty indeed!

Seeing Bilbo manage children before he had Frodo move in with him was very
nice. It's something one doesn't always think of, about how someone who had
been living so long on his own would adjust to having a much younger
housemate all of a sudden. But he shows himself determined, capable, and
resourceful as only a hobbit can be, and the story is very charming. All the
characters have distinct voices, Lobelia's shrewishness is particularly well
done, and the light humor throughout works beautifully.

Rabidsamfan really gets the voices right for me, and does so while hitting
some important points in novel ways. The triangle of Frodo, Sam, and Gollum
was one of the enduring relationships through "The Two Towers", and Sam's
belated, half-conscious recognition that he couldn't kill Gollum when he had
the chance at Orodruin, followed by Gollum's inadvertant completion of the
quest, should have consequences. Rabidsamfan brings them out, and goes back
to one of the best lines of the book: that pity and mercy rule the fates of
many, and here we see those qualities getting played out with hindsight, in
the form of remorse. We also see the groundlessness of Sam and Frodo after
the scouring of the Shire, and how it drives them underneath the prettiness
of the text. But it never becomes overdone, the story never really becomes
overwrought; there's always that light quality to the prose that makes me
think, "Yes, these are hobbits!" despite the realistic handling of grief.
And Rabidsamfan does very well to show how that fateful triangle of
Gollum-Frodo-Sam, and the other triangulated relations with the Ring
replacing one of the end terms, are taken apart emotionally by the
establishment of new triangles—of Sam, grounded by his love for Rosie, and
both of them providing purchase for Frodo to stay long enough to see them
both healed, but especially Sam. And then Pippin, Merry, and the girls that
are beginning to come between them a bit. Frodo and the three Rings and
their bearers also get a mention. Anyhow, a thoroughly enjoyable
post-Scouring story!

This is an absolutely hilarious renditions of "I am the Very Model of a
Modern Major General" by Gilbert and Sullivan that I found myself 'singing'
along to! What an incredible work of art and how difficult it must have been
to try to get the metre down.
I can only imagine the amount of fiddling it must have taken to get it just
right, but Kenaz certainly has managed to create a truly inspired 'poem.'
And what is the icing on the ice is that Kenaz has managed to keep not only
the humour but the character in our Marchwarden of Lothlorien while keeping
to the true spirit of Gilbert and Sullivan. Well done!

It's difficult to write children without turning to silliness and fluff and
Leaward does a wonderful job with this portrayal of her original character
Tarkil as a child. She's taken bits from what Tolkien didn't say and woven a
wonderful, realistic, heartbreaking custom and uses this child to show it to
the reader. Her custom of returning the swords to the widow is poignant and
nothing short of genius. To be handed your husband’s sword, and know he will
be not wielding it again – what more needs to be said. It highlights the
difficulty of expression at such times, that words are weak in the face of
such emotion.
Leaward takes this difficult subject and shows us through the eyes of a
child who will one day be given his father’s sword, his brother’s sword –
who will have to consider that his wife will be given his sword, or their
son’s swords.
Little Tarkil’s words are so very insightful, that he wants a new sword. Who
could argue? -yet who knows what the future holds for him?
- Leaward!?, and all of us who are eagerly following grown-up Tarkil on
patrol, south to Gondor and home again, where he does face these difficult
issues on his own. Will he follow in the footsteps of his father and
brothers, letting someone else return his sword to his wife, or will he do
as his older brother and retire from rangering to raise his own family?
Great job, Leaward.

I think my favorite line out of this drabble is the following: "What had
before been created out of nothing was now re-created out of worse than
nothing: disaster and impending doom." Great twist, there, placing disaster
as worse than nothing, so that the alliances forged in the midst of disaster
are in some sense a greater wonder than creation ex nihilo.

The Ring's influence is so insidious, it just slips under the radar with
other, more familiar complaints. In a less careful man, that would be
disastrous, and there'd be no recognition of a problem until it was too
late.

I think my favorite line out of this drabble is the following: "What had
before been created out of nothing was now re-created out of worse than
nothing: disaster and impending doom." Great twist, there, placing disaster
as worse than nothing, so that the alliances forged in the midst of disaster
are in some sense a greater wonder than creation ex nihilo.

you've got sunshine and warm flagstones to sleep on, what else could

The Ring's influence is so insidious, it just slips under the radar with

disastrous, and there'd be no recognition of a problem until it was too

I liked this story, though it seemed overlong somehow. The paragraph where
Faramir summarizes the story he will read to Farry is a jewel, however.
