place to go, and I love the way he characterizes various members of the
Fellowship. The respectives roles of Frodo and Sam were very natural, but
the extrapolation of roles for Merry and Pippin was inspired. And it worked,
too. I love how these two little hobbits decided to treat the Fellowship as
one big extended family and how the other members of the Fellowship
responded to this by joining that family. It's a development I hadn't truly
considered myself, and this story lays out how blind I was for not thinking
of things in these terms. Great vignette and great character development for
everyone.

was apparently made for Earendil's nighttime voyages. I liked that. And
Inglor's many experiences with betting, or avoiding betting. Or the fact
that the dwarves used the palantir to watch the gold channel. Wonderful
little bits like that added up to make a very fun story. And I really liked
the epilogue, where the walrus discovered another "clam." Boy those palantir
are hard to hold onto.

immediately to Gandalf when looking for comfort, and the image of a little
hobbit child burrowing beneath Gandalf's beard is priceless. It gave me
quite a chuckle. The song Gandalf chose to sing was also priceless, though
in a different way, and the story turned from humor to comfort so quickly
and yet so smoothly that it felt magical. And given that one of our primary
characters is Gandalf, that strikes me as very appropriate. Thank you for a
wonderful little tale.

this story, because it prompted some rather loud guffaws. The first line
accompanied by Aragorn's reaction hit me hardest, and after that, it was
hard to stop laughing, especially when it seemed that Legolas found the
question as hilarious as everyone else. Poor Gimli. Eowyn's part was equally
fun, particularly the moment when Eldarion consoles her on having to kiss
Faramir and Eowyn thanks him for his concern. Absolutely priceless. Children
are brilliant.

segment molds to the same form, which immediately creates a feeling of
similarity between them all. And yet they are all so very different. The
form might be the same, but the motivations and the rationale cover almost
the entire spectrum. Alike, and yet not alike. It's makes for quite an
interesting read, and the contrasts and the similarities accentuate one
another perfectly. So many perspectives on the same battle. And that, of
course, is another like/unlike thing to add to the mix. Brilliant concept
and great writing.

hobbit form and simplicity in elven form, and somehow they merge. Remind me
never to send Legolas off to look for someone, but if he were to come
looking for me, I'd certainly accept. I love how he doesn't offer to counsel
Frodo when he decides that the hobbit is troubled. It reminds me of Gildor's
reluctance to give advice back in the Shire, and I suspect Legolas would be
even more reluctant. But he definitely knows how to help, even if Frodo is a
bit confused by his actions. As for Frodo, I love the description of the
willow tree and I love how he feels drawn to it. The union with the water
sounds so peaceful and simple that I think it fits him very well. And when
Legolas and Frodo return, I very much enjoyed the reaction of the other
hobbits. Pippin was wonderful, and Sam was also in rare form, reproachful as
well as understanding. He does that a lot during the Quest, and it's good to
see the formation here in this little prelude. Beautiful writing and a
beautiful little vignette to start the Fellowship off.

sent Gimli, a dwarf of many journeys already, to the Shire to warn Bilbo
that he was being hunted. And I love the idea that watchful Merry, who was
one of the few in the Shire to know anything about the Ring, turned him
away. Probably not the best way to start out a friendship, but it seems to
work out as Gimli and Merry realize why the other was so cautious. That they
both respect each other for loyalty and secrecy is a testament to their
understanding that larger things are work. But perhaps most of all, I love
Gimli's description and how Merry reacts to him. He's certainly intimidating
when he wants to be, and I can imagine what Merry must have thought when he
turned up with a supposed trading party looking for someone named Baggnis
who had a Ring. Great story, and great bridge-builder between hobbit and
dwarf.

where Landroval was a featured character, and I love it. He reminds me quite
a bit of Gandalf, actually, but perhaps not quite as brisk or abrupt. Maybe
he's more like Elrond. In any case, he's clearly a very wise bird, and I
love what he says to Merry about Pippin and falcons. I also loved his humor
at the thought that he was but a tale to the hobbits, and I laughed when he
said that he hoped it was a good telling. It was a stroke of genius to have
one of the eagles stay behind in case more urgent care was needed, and it's
probably a good thing that Merry is only learning of this now rather than
learning of it when the danger was greater. As for Merry himself, he was
characterized very well, and I really admire his protectiveness of Frodo,
Pippin, and Sam. Kudos to Aragorn for getting him to leave even for a
moment.

fascinating original character as well as one of the most complete
characterizations I've ever seen of Frodo, who never even entered the story
until the very end. And he was certainly not the only person to be
characterized. Everyone Ruvenir met on his journeys was brilliant and
detailed, but it was really Ruvenir himself that took the cake. I love the
way he drew and the way he sculpted. The descriptions of his art and the way
he went about getting to know his subjects was fascinating. I was drawn in
to all the stories and all the memories. The intrigue was also a brilliant
addition, and I loved the politics that went on behind the scenes and how
Ruvenir found himself caught up in them. Excellent writing, wonderful
narrative, and a very fitting tribute to Frodo and others was created in the
end. Great story!

through both Moria and Lothlorien, and it goes without saying that I love
anything with a good focus on Legolas and Gimli. And it's that focus that
really drives the story. There's a balance struck early on, and neither the
dwarf nor the elf are ever completely right or completely wrong in their
disagreements. And I love the way that their friendship progresses slowly,
sometimes stopping and reversing course before finding something else that
might speed it along. It's a very gradual process with many setbacks, and I
love the way it's drawn out with slow relish. The narrative and the
descriptive work is also a brilliant part of this story, and the
surroundings become as much of a character as the Fellowship itself. Beyond
that, Rumil and Orophin get points from me for this fantastic bit of
dialogue in reference to Elrond's choice of a dwarf in the Fellowship:
“I suppose Lord Elrond had his reasons,” said Rúmil thoughtfully.
“Lord Elrond did not have to travel with him,” said Orophin, and Legolas was
inclined to agree.
Amazing story all around and the perfect gap-filler for the development of a
friendship between Legolas and Gimli.

whole-heartedly agree. Not that I have read a surplus of stories about
Melian (or Thingol, for that matter) but this one is definitely different
than any I have ever seen. So many people assume that Melian, by virtue of
being an Ainur, would be superior to Thingol and the other elves in every
way. But here Marnie recognises an important fact: Melian was not one of the
Valar, the creators and the rulers; instead, she was a handmaiden. She was
never meant to govern. I have to admit that I was stunned by the beauty with
which Marnie captures just why Melian loved Thingol, and her doubts after
Thingol's death. Wodnerfully, brilliantly done.

elf and dwarf. Legolas's thoughts about Gimli feeling loss as keenly as any
elf seemed to set the stage, and then the thoughts of black blood on blades
and red blood within were great. It's an even more fitting analogy with the
realization that they are both warriors and their trade is essentially
blood. Good introspection and good descriptive work.

Quest, and it's fortunate that Gandalf ultimately decided to trust
friendship in the case of Peregrin Took. Foresight couldn't possible see
everything that he accomplished, and this joint realization by both Gandalf
and Faramir makes Pippin's accomplishments seem that much bigger. Nicely
done.

place to go, and I love the way he characterizes various members of the
Great vignette and great character development for
everyone.

Beautiful writing and a
beautiful little vignette to start the Fellowship off.

work out as Gimli and Merry realize why the other was so cautious. That they
both respect each other for loyalty and secrecy is a testament to their
understanding that larger things are work. But perhaps most of all, I love
Gimli's description and how Merry reacts to him. He's certainly intimidating

anything with a good focus on Legolas and Gimli.

> Thundera Tiger · 2005-08-04 18:14:40 Score: 3Touching! I love the idea that Boromir's lessons to Pippin would be revealed
to Faramir during his own sparring session with the hobbit. It's another
thing they can share in common now, and that's a comforting thought. Great
way of pairing these two up.

> Thundera Tiger · 2005-08-04 18:15:07 Score: 3That's definitely an interesting point about Earendil's name, since he was
named long before he could ever see the Sea. I like Idril's pondering of
Tuor's foresight, and I like the description of them as they come toward
her. It seems that they've found a home in exile that they might love better
than Gondolin.

> Thundera Tiger · 2005-08-04 18:16:21 Score: 4Failed foresight was probably responsible for quite a few good things on the
Quest, and it's fortunate that Gandalf ultimately decided to trust
friendship in the case of Peregrin Took. Foresight couldn't possible see
everything that he accomplished, and this joint realization by both Gandalf
and Faramir makes Pippin's accomplishments seem that much bigger. Nicely
done.
