Very surreal. A good portrayal of the ambivalent relationship of the
Ringbearer and the Ring, love and hate entwined. I particularly liked the
paradox of Frodo blinded by his claim upon the Ring, yet seeing and being
everything at once—in exchange for his own identity, he's claimed by the
being of everything else and crushed under it, even as I would imagine the
Dark Lord is, who put his essence into things and so left himself vulnerable
to the destruction of one of them. The revelation of Gandalf's and Elrond's
thoughts and knowledge, and Frodo's bitter protest that he would've done
their bidding even with their knowledge is well-played, the transmutation of
compassion into a lie in his eyes the final stripping away Frodo endures,
until Gollum arrives. Interesting also the suggestion that Frodo was in the
end responsible for the destruction of the Ring, if not by his own hand, at
least by his immediately present intention.

Ah, an excellent gap to be filled! One does miss this scene, once one finds
it. Surely Frodo would have had some objection to the idea of dragging Sam
with him on a dangerous journey. And one imagines that if he had this talk
prior to the one at Crickhollow, it'd make it easier for him to accept the
others' pledges for what they are: inevitable and irrevocable.

Thank you for making something more of the movieverse charge than our
esteemed director made of it. It was good to see Faramir acting in a
captain's stead, trying to deal with the bad hand he's been dealt and
actually spare as many of his men as he is able, rather than simply drag all
of them with him to their deaths. One sleepwalks through this fic, which is
as it should be given the context.

Deep waters here, and certainly the lowest of all places to fall to: total
despair. Pity is a difficult theme to write about, yet it is a cornerstone
of LOTR. The difficulty lies in its effects, in what it implies about the
positions of those who pity with respect to those who are pity, and then
there are the wild cards of temperament and the corruptive proximity to an
evil that makes it its business to know how to worm its way into a person's
heart and break him or her. The nameless rider of this story is another
Denethor in this respect, though he takes his self-loathing out on himself
alone.

As promised, the hobbity resilience and light-heartedness come through,
preventing what might've been a real angstfest. The shock factor of simply
being alive is certainly something Frodo and Sam would have to deal with,
and it was handled very well. Not overly weepy, not overly terrified nor
dislocated, but disoriented, disbelieving and with the tears coming only
when they needed to. The dialogue was well done, all the way through, with
Gandalf and the younger hobbits feeling especially in character.

An interesting little interlude in Bree. The hobbit interactions are nicely
done; they know each other, are comfortable with each other. Merry and
Aragorn both feel a bit distant as they come to know a little more about

suddenly share close quarters with strangers, who aren't able to be party to
the little in-jokes the hobbits' talk reveals.

A good introspective piece, allowing Frodo a chance to reflect on the
hazards of having companions one cares about on a long journey. Thundera
puts Frodo's need to decide his own course into a context of a continually
renewed choice to sacrifice his own roots—first, to give up the peace of the
Shire, and this time, the harder choice to sacrifice the bonds of
companionship. Of course, little does he realize the Ring is likely driving
him at this point, and people will do as they freely will. He can't control
everything—although he grasps the lesson the currents of Anduin teach on one
level, he hasn't yet recognized that the very fatality of events and the
lack of control one has over them is also a blessing where friends enter
into the picture.

I very much liked seeing a story that keeps Boromir in the fight, even after
his death. It took a moment to realize who he was—Lindelea makes good use of
the device of keeping the character nameless, save for the job he does for a
time, which makes the revelation of his name the sweeter. Boromir remains
one of the Fellowship, and the Captain-General of Gondor, faithful to death
and beyond in the pursuit of those duties. A fitting non-end for him.

A very honest scene between Sam and Boromir, and for once not over possible
Ringlust. The difference in experience and ability between hobbits and Men
comes in for some frank, unself-conscious (at least on Sam's part)
discussion in this vignette, and it's nice to see that tackled head on
between them, rather than the hobbits being talked about by Boromir,
Aragorn, or Gandalf, or the hobbits' own self-observations kept within their
own little group. Sam's only apparently artless way of bringing that
conversation about is nicely handled, and it shows up his own courage in
humility: he's not afraid of the truth, and isn't afraid to say it out loud,
which I think Boromir would admire and respect. Well done!

Boromir's and Faramir's childhood. These can be quite well-done but "Cup of
Bitterness" is probably the best such story I have ever read. As I've said
in other reviews, I really like stories that build on canon, but with the
brothers 'mir often the only canonical events from this period are very
sketchy or very depressing. This story gets very depressing in places, of
course, but it never truly descends into outright angst.
That isn't what I like best about this story, though. For me, the thing that
absolutely makes it work is Denethor. Tanaqui is spot on throughout this
piece; she walks a tightrope and does it admirably. Denethor is neither
abusive nor distant nor a push-over. In the hands of any other author
(myself included) he could be made into any of these things. But Tanaqui
makes sense of Denethor's actions through his thoughts -- and those thoughts
seem very Denethor-esque.
those thoughts lead me to another thing I like so much about this piece,
which is the pacing. Denethor is probably one of the most contemplative
characters in Tolkien's corpus (certainly among the mortals), and it's easy
to let that contemplating overwhelm the piece. But in "Cup of Bitterness"
Tanaqui artfully weaves Denethor's inner thoughts in with rich physical
descriptions and other people's actions (and his own, for that matter). She
uses things like his search for the right key to show his frustration, the
constant threat of slipping on mettare berries to show his respect for (and
to a certain degree disdain for) tradition, and his choice to look at the
palantir instead of accompanying Adrahil to his personal chambers to show
his priority and scholarly fascination.
And when there is the reflection of the brand in the palantir (or so he
thought)... simply perfect way to end the piece.

the way you had Faramir reconcile himself to have Elven neighbors. I'm sure
it would seem seem odd to him, but he is wise enough to see the wisdom in
having them around.

unease in Ithilien and his inability to traipse through the wilds without
making a sound; I'm sure that Faramir's Ithilien rangers would have teased
him to no end like this. Then Legolas's moment of worry when he is afraid
that something is wrong with Aragorn and possibly also with Arwen. How awful
it would be if Arwen died in child birth or something like that, after
waiting so long for her to safely deliver! But then Beregond clarifies, and
the humour shines through. I know I laughed aloud at Legolas's "un-elven
whoop". This seemed to be perfect thoughts for Beregond (but at the same
time not at all out-of-character for Legolas to behave that way), and the
line itself was great. This was a great moment, just as I would imagine it.

One does miss this scene, once one finds

others' pledges for what they are: inevitable and irrevocable.

esteemed director made of it. It was good to see Faramir acting in a
captain's stead, trying to deal with the bad hand he's been dealt and
actually spare as many of his men as he is able, rather than simply drag all

The dialogue was well done, all the way through, with
Gandalf and the younger hobbits feeling especially in character.

done; they know each other, are comfortable with each other. Merry and
Aragorn both feel a bit distant as they come to know a little more about

A good introspective piece, allowing Frodo a chance to reflect on the
hazards of having companions one cares about on a long journey. Thundera
puts Frodo's need to decide his own course into a context of a continually
renewed choice to sacrifice his own roots—first, to give up the peace of the
Shire, and this time, the harder choice to sacrifice the bonds of
companionship. Of course, little does he realize the Ring is likely driving
him at this point, and people will do as they freely will. He can't control
everything—although he grasps the lesson the currents of Anduin teach on one
level, he hasn't yet recognized that the very fatality of events and the
lack of control one has over them is also a blessing where friends enter
into the picture.

the device of keeping the character nameless, save for the job he does for a

one of the Fellowship, and the Captain-General of Gondor, faithful to death
and beyond in the pursuit of those duties.

These can be quite well-done but "Cup of

in other reviews, I really like stories that build on canon, but with the
brothers 'mir often the only canonical events from this period are very
sketchy or very depressing.
And when there is the reflection of the brand in the palantir (or so he
thought)... simply perfect way to end the piece.

between Ithilien and Hollin (which I thought was a very apt comparison), and
the way you had Faramir reconcile himself to have Elven neighbors. I'm sure
it would seem seem odd to him, but he is wise enough to see the wisdom in
having them around.

unease in Ithilien and his inability to traipse through the wilds without
making a sound; I'm sure that Faramir's Ithilien rangers would have teased
him to no end like this.
This was a great moment, just as I would imagine it.

the people of Numenor thought the visitor was. A powerful elf-lord, the
herald of Gil-Galad. Because he is of course both of those things, but at
this moment he is most of all a grieving brother. That is enough.
