This is a really interesting piece. I especially liked what you did with the
relationship between Aragorn and Glorfindel.

Fun look at a very young Aragorn. I like the way that Tolkien's description
of Bilbo's home comes out as he's describing it to Estel. And Estel's
curiosity is something I can easily envision. Nice character work.

Fascinating insight into the world of Mirkwood. I was most interested in the
White Council, and I wish we could have seen a bit more from Cirdan, who
seems to suspect something about Saruman that escapes the rest of them. But
I also loved the bits with Legolas, Ithilden, and Eilian. The culture of the
elves was fleshed out well, and the coming of age ceremony was very
interesting. Great eye for the details, and great pacing throughout to make
a very fun and adventurous story.

I love Bilbo. He's such an interesting character. There are depths, but he
keeps them hidden and you have to probe to find them. I think this story
does a good job of balancing those depths with an older version of the
hobbit, and I love the way he thinks about his travels and also about how
his thoughts keep drifting toward the Ring. Aragorn's appearance was a
welcome addition, and I like the sense of adventure that Bilbo associates
with him. I could easily see that. Good introspection and great
charaterization all around.

I don't think I've ever read a story in which Maeglin forges Sting, but I
love the idea. His hate and his anger give the story passion from the very
beginning, and I enjoyed the glimpse into Maeglin's mind. I also enjoyed
seeing why he hated people, and I loved the cameo mentions of various
heroes. But I really like how Maeglin channeled his anger into the creation
of a sword that would have served him well on the road to Gondolin. It puts
a new spin on Sting's tale. Why is it that Bilbo always ends up with the
objects that might not have been forged with the best of intentions?

I think I would enjoy more stories about Gollum's origins. This is among the
few I've found, and I love the way it presents Gollum's family, his
grandmother, the society in which he lives, everything! We usually only see
him after he turns into a wretched creature. This vignette was a good
reminder of just how close to hobbits Gollum is, and what might have
happened to others had they kept the Ring for too long. Great backstory.

I think the Tolkien fandom should focus more on the eagles. They're
fascinating creatures, and so many things can be done with them. Like in
this story, when they're jostling for position and the young ones push
others off the perches. It's little details like that which really bring the
eagles to life and impress upon the reader just how different they are. But
then the story begins, and the differences fade as we are introduced to a
very noble and a very brave race. Great vignette, and great bridge between
the Battle of Five Armies and the fight before the Morannon.

no supervising adults are around to stop it. Kudos to Dissa for making it

way our unknown narrator characterizes everyone, particularly Gandalf who is

I think I liked its predecessor more, but this is certainly a worthy follow
up. I like the differing views on death, and Legolas's reassurance and how
this gives the old widow peace as he leaves. The idea that he and she have

the way Legolas clings to his mortal friends after the end of RotK. Nice
conclusion to their story.

I think what made this story so good were the little details. Details like
the confused people in the market, the fact that Dain insisted on giving
Bilbo another bag of gold, the whole idea behind Sting's new sheath, etc.
They filled the story out and made it far more enriching. Of course, the
primary characters were excellent, too. Bilbo was wonderful - every inch a
hobbit but also a hobbit who's grown into somebody more. And Balan was a
great example of a craftsman, almost immediately losing himself in the work
once Bilbo shows him the sword. Great story all around, and a great tribute
to Sting and to everything that happened in The Hobbit.

A tangled web indeed! The sheer scope and depth that Daw brought to the
world of the Wood-Elves was mind-boggling. Working against the backdrop of
events within The Hobbit, Daw managed to bring to life a connected story
that was just as complicated and involved as Bilbo's adventure, if not more
so. So many things are explained, such as the dwarves' sudden blindness, the
reason the Wood-Elves were out celebrating, their involvement in Dol Guldur,
their anger toward both the dwarves and the spiders, etc. I don't think
anything was missed, and the amount of detail that this adds to canon makes
for a very enriching read. I think my favorite part was actually the journey
south that ousted Sauron from Dol Guldur. Glorfindel was an excellent
character with a wonderfully wry sense of humor that blended well with
Eilien and Ithilden. But I very much enjoyed the fact that Legolas seemed to
think Bilbo was the child of Dori and Nori, too. Great story all around, and
it fits easily into canon as presented in The Hobbit.

Brilliant! This was such a wonderful story. The characters were bright and
vivid, and both the dialogue and the actions were so true to the books that
I have trouble believing this isn't hidden somewhere at the end of The
Hobbit. Perhaps it's part of some missing appendices or something. Gandalf
was every bit the wizard, impossible to nail down and at times infuriating,
but warm and caring all the same. Bilbo was certainly a changed creature
from the hobbit we met at the start of his adventures, and I loved to watch
how these changes affected his interactions with the other hobbits. It
wasn't as obvious in the books, but seeing him in contrast to everyone else
in the Shire reveals just how different he is. I loved the way he burgled
the Sackville-Bagginses. They certainly deserved it, and I absolutely loved
the way he took his arm chair home, with almost nobody saying a word to his
face but obviously talking about it with everyone else. Great little
gapfiller for the ending of a wonderful story. Thank you.

At last, Legolas puts all of that charm of his to good use. I very much
enjoyed this story, and I like the way the old widow and Legolas played off
one another. They were perfect foils, and the way they both took it up a
notch toward the end made me laugh. Concede here, give there, and all works
out in the end, especially with a genial smile on the part of Mirkwood's
prince. The "studied casualness" with which Legolas reveals his parentage
was especially good. I wonder if Legolas uses his charm on all the
merchants, but I would hope he'd save it for instances such as this. He was
far more successful than Galion in acquiring the wine, at any rate.
Brilliant little vignette.

Absolutely brilliant story! I loved the narrative voice. It was just like a
crotchety old grandfather sitting around telling stories of the good ol'
days, except that this was a thrush. I loved his opinion on dwarves, men,
elves, and the "little round thing" that he never really understood. The way
he claims to have known Gwaihir and his complete obsession with snails was
fantastic. And I love his comparison of dwarves to magpies, except that
magpies seem to be smarter. He was so very full of himself! Of course, those
wandering about stuck on the earth are pretty full of themselves, too, so I
suppose he can be excused. The conclusion was perhaps my favorite part, as
it nicely tied off what had gradually become a running snail gag. Wonderful
voice for the character, and great interpretation of Smaug's fall.

maple and birch sap.

This story was first published in Aratlithiel's LiveJournal, and it came in
eight episodes, day by day - which enabled me to enjoy each installment,
sitting in front of my computer and literally howling with laughter. The
author describes a day during Frodo's stay in Minas Tirith. The Ringbearer
still has to recover, and instead of serving him the food he desires, he has
to stay in bed and endure a diet that makes him rather sour and acid-minded.
On this particular day he finally decides that enough is enough and with the
help of his fellow hobbits he escapes out of the window.

"“Where could he have gone?” Frodo heard Pippin ask.

“How the blue blazes should I know?” Merry cried angrily. “Frodo, I can’t
hold this pose much longer, or you’re going to pull us both out the window.”

“Well, pull me back up, then!”

“What part of ‘I can’t move or I’ll lose my grip’ did you not understand?”

Oh, this was getting worse by the second. He again stretched his legs down,
toes seeking any firm surface to light upon. He was edging on panic now and
worse, so were his cousins above him. Where on earth could Sam be and why
in all the bloody--

“Hello, there, Frodo.”

That voice was familiar. And it wasn’t Sam."

And so the story of Frodo's hilarious escape goes on and on, and again -
like in "Of Dwarvish Ale and Battle Scars" Faramir proves to be very
helpful. Frodo gets the meal he wants and visits an inn - his encounter with
a barmaid sent me on the floor - and even Gandalf is content at last. It's a
brilliant, clever and funny tale. and I simply adore it

And only Finrod would have felt so much compassion for the last of his

Poignant, and although the author claims Finduilas will fail to keep her
promise, I am not so certain. After all, Finduilas only promises to try for
her love, and one may strive for short or long, and the failure to achieve
the end does not negate the effort.

A beautiful addition to the verses sung in Boromir's honor, and that nicely
capture and turn to an advantage the refusal to ask the East Wind for
tidings. It moves this from a lament to a song of resistance and defiance—a
true memorial for the Boromir who will live in memory, not be merely a part
of the dead past.

The substituted oath makes for an excellent scene, a transformation that
affects all three men involved, Aragorn, Boromir, and Faramir. It breaks
this AU free of what might've been an encombering reliance on what's given,
and makes this scene and the original scenes of stewardly oath-taking, feel
fresh again.

"We focussed not on moving lips,
Lest our own take on a quiver,
Unbecoming Gondor’s metal."

An excellent play on words, here, mettle/metal, and each appropriate. The
transformation of Faramir and his men into the objects of their craft,
blades and metal without souls or hopes, was well done.
