I love this drabble—insightful, pithy, and with the necessary killer last

"Worm-eaten directives taste foul in my mouth. I let them pass ...
'Tis worth the price to hear the thunder roll."
Well done, Nessime!

It's nice to see a little of the Battle of the Fords of Isen (both of them),
and from Grimbold's perspective. Even moreso than Elfhelm, he's
underwritten, and here we at least catch a glimpse of the relationship
between the two of them, and how it complicates their battle plans.

Something about the Rohirrim seems to inspire tales of riders and mares,
wherein the mare gets to play the role, as it were, of seductress or
mistress. Here's yet another! But what good fun, to find it a stormy
courtship and "consummation"—a fitting change given the Rider. And it's
always fun to see Aragorn get back as good as he gives and even get bested
every so often. He needs it, his audidence appreciates it, whether composed
of fictional characters (Thengel, Morwen, and Éofara certainly get a number
of good laughs out of the whole episode) or MEFA readers.

There's just something so wonderfully irreverant about this, and yet so very
right. Too many Éomer slash stories play him as the brainless, walking
hormone; not enough of them get that sense of spirit and challenge, whether
through his eyes or his lover's. Gimli has the right perspective to get at
that contentious nature that isn't easily mastered in Éomer (well, the man
did go to prison for threatening Grima in defiance of the law and in full
sight of everyone); and Honesty has the skill to pull off a set-up like
this:
"[H]e had just insulted the Lady Galadriel in my presence.
It made me want to smack him around the head - preferably with an axe - but
it also made me want to tear his clothes off and ravish him senseless. But I
can't help that. Blondes always have that effect on me - even Galadriel,
though of course I never have"
And make it actually work. This definitely makes much of the adage that love
is war, but unlike some other "fight-sex" fics I've read, I think this one
pulls it off, and leaves both characters in lust, at least, and still
determined to find out just how much the other can take. Well done!

It is nice to see an Éowyn "romance" with someone other than Faramir or
Gríma, and not yet with Aragorn, although he's in this by the end, if only
in absentia (as always). It's an interesting reversal, with Háma being both
the older man, and also the body that serves another, rather than the
reverse. The desperation is about right, I think, for this sort of
relationship, and Éowyn's untouchability, even in the most intimate of
settings, is well-written. The eroticism fits the story, and I don't have
much trouble, even, putting this alongside the canonical events and seeing
it as something that perhaps might have happened. Bravo, Cupiscent!

This is absolutely one of the most engaging fics that I have read in quite
some time. The attention to detail, voice and canon, while extrapolating on
a subject only touched upon IN cannon is remarkable. I found myself drawn in
both visually and emotionally.
It is a remarkable story that can impact how a reader views parts of
Tolkien's world, and you have managed to do that for me, and then some. I
will never be able to read or think of the deaths of Aragorn and Arwen again
without having this delightfully sad tale come to mind. The images and
feelings are indelibly etched into my mind and my heart.
A very compelling read and a story that I have bookmarked to read again and

refreshing to see a female Tolkien character defended! Werecat has done a
thoughtful job of tracking down and presenting the scant Berúthiel canon
references. I had one criticism. I wished that the author had been able to
defend the Queen without placing her in a Gondoron society that viewed
queens as having little social worth except as ornaments; a society in which
a bored male who disliked his loveless marriage could indulge himself with
the “willing maids.” Yes, human medieval society was probably like that, but
come on! We’re talking fantasy medieval society written by and for
women, mostly. Can’t we equalize it a little?
Anyway, I loved the practical approach that Werecat used to present her
defenses of this unlucky queen. Werecat, you would make a great
documenatarian! And when we read about the love you extend to your
beautiful, mysterious cats, which shines through all your writing, we can
remember to extend it to the rest of the unique creatures who share the
space with us.
A lovable and enjoyable piece. Good job.

many Tolkien fanworks that portray Éowyn, Arwen, and ordinary rank-and-file
women so negatively. Depressed, suicidal, able only to think of a man,
whorish, uneducated, lacking social clout of any kind, etc. etc. ad nauseum.
When I detect this theme in fan fiction I flee, weirdly dismayed and
chortling, and I ask myself, Why?
If these writers, who are almost all women, lived in a genuinely egalitarian
society that made no differentiation between men and women in dispensing the
privileges and resources, then I can see exploring the dark side, trying to
experience vicariously what it might feel like to be a second class citizen.
But since we live in societies in which men predominate in every field that
society rewards - say, education, religion, medicine, corporations,
military, politics, art, and science, for instance – then why would women
portray women as losers in their fantasy fiction? It isn’t as if Tolkien
didn’t provide avenues of equality to explore, especially for the Elves (see
Laws and Customs among the Eldar, HoME Morgoth’s Ring).
Why do they see Éowyn as a coward when Merry, whose actions and feelings are
very nearly identical to hers, is lauded as a hero? The writers hasten to
point out that there are differences between Merry’s motivations and
Éowyn’s. Yes, there are. But why insist that the differences are great, when
you have the choice to view them as negligible and end up with a positive
view of Éowyn?
Why portray poor women as prostitutes in a society that the writer is
careful to specify as male-dominated, and then expect the female reader
enjoy the story?
I think it is some form of desperate denial - that women today have been
raised to think that women’s liberation took care of the problem for them
years ago, when their own present experiences show it has not. So the
writers go out of their way to bash heroines, perhaps thinking that if we
show how even-handed we are, how fair we are in criticizing our own, then
perhaps the society around will straighten out and become fair also.
I wish.
But since that is not how it works, I would rather read about women who are
powerful, talented, confident, strong, fully possessed of all the goodies
that society has to offer.
You see, I said that this article was thought-provoking. The author has made
a diligent and considered effort to analyze Tolkien’s characterizations in
general and as applied to Éowyn and Arwen. Good job. Many thanks for this
piece.
And if any fan fiction writer reads this and wants to write about women
characters, please make them strong, confident, not perfect mind you, but
powerful, purposeful, vibrant, heroines. Please.
*It would be such a refreshing change.*

article.
Well, no. Actually she is a heroine of the ages. But notwithstanding the
equivocation of the writer’s conclusion, I still liked, (no, I loved) the
defense of Éowyn. I will never understand why (mostly) women writers bash
Éowyn when applauding Merry, even though their actions were so similar. The
writer has a choice – to exaggerate the differences and conclude that Éowyn
is defective, or to discount the differences and see Éowyn as equal or
superior to the male Hobbit.
If these writers, who are almost all women, lived in a genuinely egalitarian
society that made no differentiation between men and women in dispensing the

It is tough to go against such an attitude, which I think is born of an
internalization of fear. So I applaud this defense of a major female
character in Tolkien’s world. I will go out of my way to read more by this
author. Thank you..
Fan fiction writers, I will be the constant reader of stories that portray
women characters, as strong, confident, not perfect mind you, but powerful,

ahh, Lady Aranel, it breaks my heart when you don't update this wonderfully
sad and bittersweet picture of both love and friendship. I'd dearly love to

It is such a delightful view of Faramir and Eowyn, and especially of Legolas
in the years after the war. All settled down, except for the lonely Wood
Elf. I truly enjoy seeing homey Faramir and mother-Eowyn, but it breaks my
heart to see Legolas with Elboron, and no child of his own. When he talks
about feeling the beat of two hearts in Eowyn, it is just heartbreaking. He
must be fighting the sea longing, and this longing as well, but he must also
know, if he loved a mortal, that he could still have a long life with her
and then sail. I know I have seen other chapters of this, but not so many

wherein the mare gets to play the role, as it were, of seductress or
mistress. Here's yet another! But what good fun, to find it a stormy
courtship and "consummation"—a fitting change given the Rider. And it's
always fun to see Aragorn get back as good as he gives and even get bested

Bravo, Cupiscent!

refreshing to see a female Tolkien character defended!

> · 2005-08-10 21:06:39 Score: 10I found this essay thought-provoking. While reading it I was reminded of the
many Tolkien fanworks that portray Éowyn, Arwen, and ordinary rank-and-file
women so negatively.
Please.

The
writer has a choice – to exaggerate the differences and conclude that Éowyn
is defective, or to discount the differences and see Éowyn as equal or
superior to the male Hobbit.

sad and bittersweet picture of both love and friendship.

I know I have seen other chapters of this, but not so many
that I know where it is headed. Every time I re-read it, I am still curious
to know more. You will have to quit teasing us and get those other chapters
polished and online.

Wise words from Théoden, transforming the ordinary dynamics of a
sibling-esque relationship into a lesson for kingship.

Interesting to see Boromir among the Rohirrim, and see that titular line in

Love at first sight, it seems, comes with some bruising! Firefoot is rather
adorable, here, and I like Éomer's rationale for naming him so.

That would be classic Denethor: all the right facts, all the wrong

The time frame isn't clear, here, but assuming this is Aragorn's earlier
visit, wherein "if a man must... tread the deadly flowers of Morgul Vale,
then perils he will have", that last line is deliciously ironic.

Stories within stories. I like the way the tale is repeated, and that
Anardil hears it differently as a Ranger than he did as a little boy,
mediated as the story is now by the loss of the father who figures in it.

A believably Dúnadan carol. Aragorn is not the only Ranger watched over in
thought, and one gets a sense of the depth to which old customs go for the
Rangers and their people.
