Pride goeth—what a tragedy, and in just two hundred words. It seems evident
that not all of the Faithful left in Númenor could have been crammed aboard
those nine ships. But although these two have, sadly, missed the boats, they
still hold onto hope, and remain faithful—to each other, and the hope that
death is not an end.

I think the last three are my favorites from this lot. The bit about Aragorn
pretending not to notice his opponent is letting him win the game says
there's a lot going on more interesting than the chess itself; followed hard
by that sad little wondering about his mother, whose life is growing thin,
these two pieces stretch his homelife between, I would guess, the two women
in his life, between hope and exhaustion. And then the little note
explicitly to his father, assuring him that the North is safe completes that
little family tableau.

I think this is my favourite line of this drabble, if only because it
includes the political as well as the personal side of their relationships.
Legolas was carrying Thranduil's messages so he was acting in the capacity
of a liege, and so it was quite daring for Legolas to come on the Quest at
all. This was well done.

Fourth Age. But half way through one realises that it isn't a future that
has already been realised, but Faramir's deluded fantasy of what would
happen if he were to take the Ring makes the drabble all the more powerful.
I particularly liked the last line, "Would he save what he held most dear if
nothing would grow fair or bear fruit or flower again without the Enemy's
taint?" I'm not sure if you meant it, but this seemed like a neat play on
Gandalf's line in "Minas Tirith": "And for my part, I shall not wholly fail
of my task, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this
night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to
come."
Oh, and kudos for realising that yes Faramir was tempted by the Ring, yes he
had a real danger of not passing the test, but yes he realised in time the
ring's deception. If only Peter Jackson's scriptwriters had been wise enough
to realise that little fact. ;-)

Elrohir and Elladan are certainly more attuned to the sword than to healing

as though Arwen realizes this, especially when she goes back to memories of
Celebrian's lessons for help in singing Celebrian's song. The lessons
themselves are also very fitting. The song will be different depending upon
the singer, and knowing this, who better to sing than Celebrian's daughter?
I love the idea of this being a tribute, and I love the song that comes out

continued taint, or was the blood washed away at last?" It's interesting
that you ask that question, because I think it could go either way.
Personally I want to believe that the taint was washed away. And I think
canon suggests this answer (unless you want to posit some gargantuan
sacrifice between this point and the end of the Third Age, when she is
allowed to sail West). But I think in this case the interesting point is not
the answer but the question, if you know what I mean. Once I sat down and
thought about it, I realised that I couldn't easily dismiss eithehr option.
You say in your note before the story that Galadriel isn't your normal type
of character, and she isn't my normal character to read. I suppose in that
sense we're an interesting pair. ;-) Because I had a difinite thrill reading
this, comparable (I think) to what you must have felt writing it. I enjoyed
it so much because she was new to me -- and because you brought such a nice
original interpretation to this. My only qualm is that in the Celeborn and
Galadriel essay in UT, Tolkien suggests that Galadriel fought *against* the
Feanorians in defence of her mother's kin. I'm not sure if you would
consider rewriting this with that fact in mind. Because Galadriel still is a
kinslayer if she kills any of her family fighting for Feanor. It could be
very interesting and might be worth considering -- but even without that,
this was really a very good read.

did not have Eowyn try to marry the women off against their will. We don't
know what led these women to take up prostitution, of course, but I fan't
see it being a particularly honourable profession even among them, and I
don't think there would have been much choice in the matter: they possibly
didn't have any other choice. I hate to think that they would be forced to
give up all choice in their own lives because they weren't wealthy. (And I
will stop here before I stray too far down the road of politics for this
forum.)
Your original characters were lovely. Elleth was very earthly (though I did
wonder at that name for someone from the north), and I loved the mercantile
spirit you infused in your horse-seller. Of course Faramir would let Eowyn
see over that matter. It reminded me of Gandalf's statement that if you have
a ranger as your guide you should listen to him.
I think my favourite part about this, though, was that neither Faramir nor
Eowyn was perfect. Eowyn especially, she really did expect Faramir to read
mindss here. She was delightfully hormonal, but you didn't make her out to
be impossible. And Faramir, too, was irritated just enough to keep him from
becoming a Sue. And the ending... mmm, just enough hints of a truly romantic
scene to make it perfect. This was a very nice little story.

Miriel's tale is certainly the nightmare measure of any woman's fears—to be
shackled to her rapist, and forced at the same time to maintain every
appearance of normalcy while anything that makes life worthwhile is leeched
away. Miriel's futile efforts, her inability to be the heroine, don't
perhaps sit well with us, but certainly strike a true chord. I'm not quite
sure what to think of the quasi-seduction of Isildur, at least when
considered w.r.t. him, but I can certainly see Miriel, desperate as she is,
lonely as she is, seeking what she can from anyone who would give her
kindness and mourning its loss, even if that means she'd willingly displace
another woman.

that's a compliment, even.

If only Peter Jackson's scriptwriters had been wise enough
to realise that little fact. ;-)

You say in your note before the story that Galadriel isn't your normal type

sense we're an interesting pair. ;-) Because I had a difinite thrill reading
this, comparable (I think) to what you must have felt writing it. I enjoyed
it so much because she was new to me -- and because you brought such a nice
original interpretation to this.
It could be
very interesting and might be worth considering -- but even without that,
this was really a very good read.

be impossible. And Faramir, too, was irritated just enough to keep him from
becoming a Sue. And the ending... mmm, just enough hints of a truly romantic
scene to make it perfect. This was a very nice little story.

An amusing first meeting of soon-to-be brothers-in-law, and it's good to see
Faramir in tyrannical mode, the terror of his father's erstwhile chamberlain
and insisting on things being done *his* way in no uncertain terms. Éomer
(to say nothing of Éowyn) will be good for him if this is what they inspire.
And I did like the comparison of Éomer and Boromir.

I think the highest praise I can say of this is that it inspired a definite
wince and a moment of squick to think of exactly what Gríma's gift-giving
is. Twenty-five words, coated with wormy slime--that's this haiku set! And
that's a compliment, even.
