Definitely more prayer like than a simple poem; I'm not familiar with this
particular hymn, although Chesterton is certainly a name in apologetics,
iirc. The religion issue in Númenor is always a bit hard to handle, but I
could imagine this being circulated in the Númenorean underground.

This seems a very believable myth for the Rohirrim, and in a form that (to
me at any rate) successfully evokes the style of an Anglo-Saxon poem.

"The Lament for Boromir" seems to be fertile ground for Ellisande. This does
mimic very nicely the tenor of the original poem, and Anduin gains a
believable voice here, as pallbearer for Boromir. The river does not simply
protect and honor his bones, but keeps his memory clean and safe as well.

It's not the poetry so much as the setting that's impressive in this piece.
There's nothing worse than receiving hard proof that your enemy is a human
being not so very different from oneself, and that his loved ones exist and
will mourn him and curse his killer—who would be you. Or in this case,
Faramir, who knows full well the ugly image of himself that is reflected
through these words. He can't undo what he's done, or avoid the fact that
whatever he may feel, he *is* the man responsible for the grief the unnamed
lover will feel, and it's to his credit that he allows himself to feel fully
that burden of responsibility and to seek to honor this unknown soldier in
some small way. It's a beautiful little scene, Werecat. Well done, once
again!

I wasn't sure how this would fit together, but after the first verse and
prose set, the rest begins to coalesce and you just let it sweep you along.
Half reflection, half sheer immediacy, but Aeneid holds it together for you,
and gives you a rather impressionist version of Boromir's journey north. It
works well, hits the emotional high points (or low points, however you look
at it) in all their physicality when called for, and there's no sense of
anything missing. Nicely done

This just shows the danger of making oneself the object of a Dark Lord's

obsessional reliving of Maedhros, his enjoyment of him, is certainly that.

Goldberry, and now the insatiable hunger of Shelob, find voice in her

Rabidsamfan comes through with nine distinctly different Nazgûl. I have to
say, number eight was the most tragic to me—one wonders about him, that he
*should* retain even a shred of love so late into the game. You actually
feel for him when those horses die. On the other hand, number five is
delightful—a bookish, geeky Nazgûl! Who'd have imagined it? if only he would
refrain from dissecting the objects of his interest, one imagines one could
get to like him. And being always slightly annoyed by Elves lately, I can't
but appreciate the annoyance of number four; I also appreciate the problem
of adjectives and their capitalization that the Witch-king encounters.
Brevity is indeed the soul of wit here. Well done!

Probably the most sensible thing to come out of that movieverse scene yet!
The Witch-king, oddly enough, feels strangely human here, if one discounts
little things like being undead, and the image of him poking through
steaming piles of fell beast droppings is amusing. So, too, the orc
beast-tender, who adds that "color" to the Barad-dûr scene. And the last
line is just evil.

Even when writing prose, there's a rhythm in Ellisande's writing, and the
repetition of lines moves us closer to a kind of poem. That the Witch-king
should reject such things as joy and happiness for raw power, and surrender
even his memories, and think himself blessed in a way—there's the power of
the Ring and the rings, the very evidence of the thralldom that he thinks to
deny by embracing the substitutes for such human things as enjoyment of the
sunrise. He's empty, filled with the darkness that seems eternal only
because in him, it blots out everything else. The very placement of the Ring
inscription, bracketing the Witch-king's narrative, shows what really
controls him.

Pity governs many fates, and even though it doesn't save Drukh, or her three
children, it's an interesting moment of mercy nonetheless. I liked the fact
that Drukh was at the battle of Pelennor, working for the defeat of Gondor
like any other Orc, and once again, the extinction of the Orcs is given some
serious consideration as to what it means and why it's happening. It makes
that moment of futile pity at the end feel sharper.

Not everything is evil in the beginning, at least not wholly so. It's a very
plausible seduction, and I like how the reports of the councilors in the
beginning set up the following scenes, so that the future Witch-king isn't
wholly unsuspicious of the being that appears before him. But in the end,
Sauron is too cunning a seducer, and knows very well how to twist what is
good in a desire to his own ends.

does it well, forcing a consideration of what it means that Orcs become
extinct. But also, it's curious that an aging Orc should, suddenly,
unexpectedly, dream of white sails, and that Kolgrun should come to care so
that he would commit his own blood to the setting down of this last, perhaps
only, tale of his own kind. What does it mean that it takes the extinction
of his kind before the Valar dispense a drop of grace into the confused and
damaged mind of an Orc? An unsettling story, all told.

I think the Fëanor comparison is probably my favorite part of this story. We
all know that Fëanor's deeds were certainly cruel and evil, but that the
initial act of creating the Silmarils might also have been tainted with a
possessiveness that would undermine their 'substantive', I suppose you could
call it, good is one that doesn't seem to enter elvish minds.
