The story fits its title so well. It's so...quiet. Dignified, almost. I
think a lot of that comes from Arwen, actually. Celeborn sees her as quietly
accepting both what has happened and what will come, and his pride in her is
undeniable. Celeborn himself is very quiet. Almost surprisingly so. And
Elladan and Elrohir were also very...quiet. I like the idea that they let
her grieve alone. They're present if needed but never intrusive. Stately
would be a good word to describe this, too, but really, I need a thesaurus.
The entire story read like a whisper of something faded and precious. It was
consumately elven in nature. As they accepted the changes in Middle-earth at
the end of the Third Age, Celeborn and his twin grandsons accepted Arwen's
death. And they did so quietly and reflectively. Beautifully written. The
mood was absolutely perfect.

Brilliant piece, and as layered as its characters. Arwen and Legolas made a
wonderful pair (platonically speaking, of course) and their walk in the rain
seemed to be exactly what Arwen needed. The discussion of control, of giving
up elven characteristics for mortal characteristics, was a masterpiece and
alluded to so many things Arwen must be going through. Legolas's
introduction of the topic was an intriguing balance between blunt and
subtle. In true elf fashion, he sidled up to it, dropping hints along the
way but never fully revealing himself until the discussion became more
candid. Arwen herself was amazing. She so rarely receives good or full
characterization, but she's definitely a solid figure here, complete with
strengths and failings. The discussion of a throat remedy, to be applied
liberally and frequently, was priceless, and I think some important lessons
might have been learned. Loved the elvish, too. Great story!

Finarfin is probably my favorite character out of the Silmarillion, so I'm
overjoyed whenever he gets any attention. And I think he's perfectly
portrayed here. He's not necessarily weaker than his brothers, but he
appears to be milder and in many respects he's certainly wiser. But these
traits seem to make it even more difficult for him to recover from what
happened, and I love the wandering paths his mind takes. Things really don't
click for him until the end of the story, when Earwen seeks him out again.
The darkness around him seems to be one of his own making as he realizes
exactly what he's lost and at what price he's lost it. It's definitely a
good thing that Earwen shows up when she does. Wonderful story through the
depths of Finarfin's mind, and thank you so much for giving poor Finarfin
some screen time.

This was an eerie change of pace from the usual post-Halls-of-Mandos-reunion
stories, and I loved it for that. I love it for many other reasons, too.
There was so much tension here between Fingolfin and Finarfin, and the
shadow of Feanor seemed to be forever present. The last paragraph was
particularly powerful, with both brothers sitting beneath the shadow of
another until the Morning Star appears. Not the happiest note to end on,
which was definitely for the best. This wasn't a happy, feel-good story.
This was grittier and probably more realistic because of that. The unease,
anger, guilt, blame, and frustration were practically tangible. These are
two elves with blood on their hands who don't find the songs "worthwhile,"
and no amount of water can wash away what has happened to them. Gutsy story.
I loved it!

This piece feels so timeless. It was over quickly, but while reading, it
seemed to stretch on and one. Which was definitely a good thing! I loved
seeing the world through Nimloth's eyes. She has some fascinating ideas on
her husband, and I love the idea that something of elf, man, and Maia is at
work in him. Her view of Galadriel was also fascinating. I don't think I've
ever found a better description of Galadriel's appearance or the feeling
that comes with being in her presence. She was alive to me, and that rarely
happens when working with Galadriel. But most of all, I loved Nimloth's
views on her uncle. Celeborn was as timeless as the story, and the emotions
in his eyes were painful. He was written with such a deft, light touch.
Definitely powerful in his own right, but also grieving. And passing on a
legacy at the same time. Beautiful story with some truly amazing imagery and
emotions.

For me, one of the most interesting things in this story was what Legolas
thought of the Noldor. If his expectations of Celeborn were any indication,
he certainly had a fascinating opinion of them. I loved the idea of Legolas
being "alternately bored and awed" while entertaining his Noldor-like guest
who was only partially present. The sad but brilliant irony is that it's
Legolas who was not all the way there, something Celeborn immediately
sensed. And the conversation that followed was fascinating. I loved
Legolas's description of the Sea-longing, and I was intrigued by Celeborn's
desire to encourage it. I wonder if the past hundred years have felt longer
to him than they have to Legolas. I also laughed at the thought of Celeborn
trying to leash Thranduil. I would be very interested in seeing what that
encounter might produce, but for now, I'll be content with this little gem.

Like the summary warns, this story is definitely darker than the average
Maedhros-sans-hand story. But because of this darkness, I think it might be
more true to the character. Maedhros strikes me as someone who would have no
qualms about manipulating others to achieve a greater end, and the strangely
methodical way he goes about this manipulation was pure Feanor. I found it
very intriguing that Maedhros wished for his body to heal but not his soul.
He's definitely a changed elf, and Fingon was so close to seeing it that it
hurt. Maedhros observed that Fingon was problematic, and I think he was
almost more problematic than Maedhros anticipated. The close of this story,
with Maedhros looking down on his game, was chilling, foreboding, and very
true to his fiery spirit and the pride of his father. I don't think I've
ever seen Maedhros depicted so well.

Each of these vignettes is great, but I think I love them each for their own
separate reason. The first one, which has Maedhros proposing to Galadriel,
the comedy is genius. I laughed out loud when Galadriel recounted how each
of Feanor's sons (save Maglor) had proposed. And the hints of Galadriel's
relationship with Feanor was also well done. Then there's the second one,
where Nerdanel speaks with Maedhros. That brief reference to bonding between
males was wonderfully done. Shades of "Passages" there, but you've boiled it
down to her essence. And Nerdanel is characterised so well, I can see
someone who would marry Feanor would be one to take risks and defy
convention. And then the last one, where Feanor finds out much and confronts
his wife, was spectacular because it was so empowering of Nerdanel. Her
answers made perfect sense -- but to see a woman stand up to a character as
strong as Feanor, and come out on top, was a real treat. All in all, these
vignettes are very well done. Thank you for treating the rammifications of a
homosexual relationship seriously, and making it more three-dimensional than
is often done in slash stories. This was a real pleasure to read.

Another masterpiece in the Elladan series. There are so many parts in there
that I wanted to remember, to comment on specifically, but I didn't watn to
stop reading long enough to take notes. I actually laughed so hard a several
parts that my cat just sat and stared at me. I loved the part about
Aragorn's speech making--screaming out cliches and pointing at the flag.
*hee*

So many parodies are not funny, the author works too hard to make it funny,
but somehow, you've combined modern college life with Tolkien's world in
such a way that it's not only incredibly funny, but it's easy to imagine the
two fitting together that way.

There are so many things to like about this drabble. Eomer's reflection that
it has been too long since Eowyn has smiled like this, and his moving beyond
the political to the personal. The head-over-heals glee that Eowyn
apparently feels when she thinks about Faramir. Eomer's infatuation with
Lothiriel. But I think my favourite part was a tiny reference: to Lothiriel
being the noblest lady in Gondor. The fact that she is probably the most
important noblewoman in Gondor before Aragorn's marriage to Arwen or
Faramir's to Eowyn isn't what Eowyn is saying, I think -- I can imagine the
two of them being good friends rather quickly, and Eowyn having a different
meaning of "noble" in mind here.

This drabble works on so many levels. First, Faramir is not stuffy. I can't
tell you how much I appreciate it. He isn't a nerd, he isn't interested in
trivia for trivia's sake, he's just... normal. Then there's the fact that
Denethor gets along with him. They display a more-or-less functional
relationship here. Whether that will someday change is of course up for
discussion, but for the moment at least they are father-and-son. And the
fact that Faramir is interested in Rohirric history I think is telling in
several ways. It foreshadows his later attraction for Eowyn, and his comment
to Frodo at Henneth Annun of the Gondorians' love of the Rohirrim, but it
also characterises him as distinct from his older brother. This is the sort
of history that little boys might enjoy, but it's glory in personal triumph,
not glory on the battle field. All in all a very nice drabble.

What an awful lot to cram into 111 words. And you got it all in there.

Well, almost. :-D

But that's the whole point, isn't it? This drabble did a good job of
capturing the frustration that all of us drabblist have felt at times, and
quietly parodies the obsession of working within the form. Well done indeed.

I admit to a rather "partisan" fondness for Bilbo-Aragorn interactions, and
this fits the bill. Bilbo's lingering obsession with the Ring and his
feeling out of place in Rivendell reinforce each other, as does his sense of
isolation and being useless. There's nothing that'll leech the joy out of
life quicker than that, but fortunatly, he has friends he can't suspect of
being his wardens, whom he can feel responsible for in some small way and so
gain back a sense of the fullness of life where all that magic resides.

Dwarves are tough, and Thror shows his mettle here: he's still got enough
left to recognize a friend and pass on his legacy to his son.
