In a tradition of dares that usually end either badly or ironically,
Celandine tells us the story of a quiet girl's treasure hunt. One wonders
whether there is something more to Smaug's resting place than meets the eye,
the way the light gives out more quickly each time she swims for the
lakebed. But she does get something for it, even if not a jewel, and we get
a fun story to read.

Well-written interaction between Bilbo and a cordwainer in Dale. Bilbo, as
is usual, manages to be both forthright yet polite and unassuming about his
identity, and the OC, Balan, is well-realized in this brief story.

Enros makes something of Gandalf's line that Smeagol's grandmother must have
been great by the measure of her own people. She's wise enough to know she
can't take the mysterious Precious from Sméagol without becoming that which

The eagles are definitely underexplored, perhaps because we have trouble
with bird-like perspectives. The story peak, and the antics and pecking
orders it inspires and establishes felt right, as did the sense of horror at
the idea of never flying again: "To be an eagle was to fly". The story
definitely fit the poem it was associated with, and it was good to see
Meneldor on the peak, in a nice bit of foreshadowing for Lord of the Rings.

Jen gives this thrush such a wonderful, proud, cantankerous voice, and plays
the bird's eye view to the hilt, inventing appropriate similes and concerns
and observations that would fit a bird in Tolkien's world, one imagines. She
even updates the fisherman's fib: "I caught a fish that was so big..."
becomes a tale of the largest snail ever cracked by a thrush. And while the
thrush may have some things to say about the way the walkers love to hear
themselves talk, it's clear he's not ashamed of his voice, either!
This is a marvelous gap-filler that fans of "The Hobbit" will appreciate.

Maeglin should create something like Sting. One wonders what he would have
thought to see not simply a mortal, but so seemingly weak and unworthy a

A worthy sequel to "The Finest of Vintages". Friendship between mortal and
immortal always comes up against the inevitable barrier of time, as it does
here. But in between, we see acknowledged explicitly what was evident in the
prequel: that theirs is a friendship that thrives with a bit of competition
and sharp-worded ripostes. At the same time, there's no need for such when
it comes to farewells, and Legolas is unusual here in arguing that the Elves
envy Men their mortality at times. Perhaps that is meant to highlight his
singularity among Elves, and suggest future friendships with mortals that
await him.

Great characterization in the narrator. I love the way he carefully finds
the means to justify spying a bit on Bilbo—labernums, roses, having a hole
on The Hill that just begs to be stood in front of for the view, etc. Acacea
nicely catches that insular tendency towards gossip that doesn't yet want to
admit what it is, and also the suspicion of other places and peoples that
leads to misinterpretation of events. A party indeed! Nicely done, Acacea.

The fate of the first orcs, or of any made orc, speaks to the deepest fears
of transformation that anyone can have: it's not only forced upon the elf,
but brings out what is most ruinous in him or her and amplified until it
overwhelms and the original self is lost, save for a painful memory. One
wonders whether Legolas is fortunate or unfortunate, that he has so much of
himself left. On the other hand, however painful it is for Legolas, perhaps
that he is so much himself despite this rather graphic form of spiritual and
substantive rape, is supposed to underline that Saruman has failed
ultimately. His power is not so great as to leave only the image of an elven
face; he can't make an orc; he can only breed them. So perhaps the ending is
a little more hopeful than it seems. And I must congratulate Honesty on her
Gimli voice—she has him pegged.

Perhaps that is meant to highlight his
singularity among Elves, and suggest future friendships with mortals that
await him.

the means to justify spying a bit on Bilbo—labernums, roses, having a hole

nicely catches that insular tendency towards gossip that doesn't yet want to
admit what it is, and also the suspicion of other places and peoples that
leads to misinterpretation of events.
