This is a series of nine wonderful drabbles about the Nine Black Riders and
is absolutely brilliant! Before I read these, I had never really given very
much thought at all about the circumstances, personalities or motivations of
any of the Black Riders, save perhaps the chief of the Nine, the dreaded
Witch-king of Angmar. They had always been basically just faceless evil,
enslaved by Sauron through the nine rings, with nothing of their previous
selves left. But the author manages in just a few chilling words apiece to
give them something distinct and separate from simply a terrifying presence.
She manages to endow each of them a distinct back-story and a fitting
personality. For a few of the villains, she actually had me feeling sorry.
(Who wouldn't be tempted by immortality if diagnosed with a terminal
disease? Who would have thought one of them would grieve for the way their
horses were killed at the Ford?) Others made me shudder in revulsion. One or
two of them actually made me smile. ( A passion for books? A love for
flying? Who would have thought of it? ) And I loved the delicious irony of
the first and greatest, as he suddenly finds himself doubting his
invulnerabilty, and then as he speculates on the exact wording of the
prophecy he had been counting on to keep him safe, when he is suddenly
confronted by Eowyn on the field of Pelonnor.

This is a brilliant use of a minor canon character, and a good look at what
a point taken can make to a life. Angelica Baggins got over her vanity, and
grew a backbone, all because of her cousin Bilbo's gift.

Everyone knows Sam carried out his part in the Quest for the love of his Mr.
Frodo. Yet perhaps he also had other reasons for doing what he did, and in
this vignette we learn what at least one of those might be. An excellent
insight into the mind of a gardener.

There are any number of stories out there focusing on the time between
Frodo's stabbing and his recovery. This one is a very plausible version,
showing the deep attachments between the hobbits, and especially Bilbo,
Frodo and Sam. Sam's insights at the end into what the quest will mean for
Frodo are especially touching.

This is a long and suspenseful story, centering around a very young Frodo,
and a cousin, a very well-realized OC, who starts out not liking our lad
very well. Through a series of traumatic and dramatic events concerning them
both, they come to admire and care for one another. I also love the
portraits drawn by this author of Frodo's parents, especially Drogo, who
comes across as sensitive and level-headed.
The story is also very well-plotted, with no loose ends dangling. The
picture of life in Brandy Hall and Buckland is intriguing as well. I do love
this story, especially the POV character, Dody.

A love for
flying? Who would have thought of it? ) And I loved the delicious irony of
the first and greatest, as he suddenly finds himself doubting his
invulnerabilty, and then as he speculates on the exact wording of the
prophecy he had been counting on to keep him safe, when he is suddenly
confronted by Eowyn on the field of Pelonnor.

and a cousin, a very well-realized OC, who starts out not liking our lad
