The pain and sorrow of being left behind once more--this time by death; yet
the one whose pain is sharpest is not the one you think at first. Such a
beautiful, angst-filled examination of what it means to be mortal, and what

I love the simplicity of the story, Sam, Merry and Pippin, busy helping to
rebuild the Shire, Merry and Pippin helping Sam to find the trees he needs.
I love the sure grasp of character the author shows. She knows and respects
these characters so much, and she has their voices down pat. I love Merry
and Pippin having a new understanding of the Old Forest after their
experience in Fangorn--something I, too, find entirely plausible, especially
since they drank Ent-draughts, and I love Sam still not being entirely sure
about them. The whole thing is very well crafted, right down to the perfect
last line.

One of the best stories I have seen dealing with the grief that Pippin and
Merry felt after losing Frodo to the Grey Havens. The whole melancholy
account of their journey homeward, Merry's worry for Pippin, and their
reassurance of one another, as they confirm their love for Frodo and their
love for each other, is all so beautifully and realistically done,
intertwining memories of happier times with the poignancy of grief.

the affection and friendship of Merry and Pippin with humor. The plot is
pure sit-com, and is as funny as can be, and yet the theme of trust and

Pippin in this, so dignified in his hurt, and Esmeralda, so wise and
understanding, and poor Merry who learns just how badly he has jumped to the

serene, as they submit to the River when they are finally assured that their

This is a very well done story of Merry's and Pippin's adjustment to once
more being home in the Shire. Grey Wonderer, as usual, has a slightly
different take on things that makes this subject, often covered in fanfic,
original. I especially like the repetiotion of the opening chapter as it
nears the end. The reactions of the hobbit's families to their
circumstances, as they fail to understand what their sons have been through,
are heart-breaking. And I love Frodo's practical compassion for his cousins.
The ending is just lovely. The whole story has the warmth and love one comes

Now I could easily see Merry and Pippin writing this little ditty to perform
at Sam's wedding. As long as it rhymed they would not be much concerned with
the accuracy of the lyrics. And I am more than certain that Pippin would
have come up with a very catchy tune. I would love to have seen Sam's face
when they sang it. I also enjoyed the "official correspondence"; it was
quite funny!
