Poor Pippin, overtired and unable to sleep because of all the thoughts
crowding his memory, soon learns that being responsible to others also means
taking care of himself. Very nicely done, and wonderful description of the
ambivalence Pippin must have felt on being forced to grow up so soon.

This has got to be one of my favorite works-in-progress. The character of
young Bergil is very finely drawn, and matches so well my own perception of
him: a sweet and helpful child, very serious, and very polite, concerned
about his proper place in the scheme of things, and yet at heart, very much
a child. He is worried about his father, he is still traumatized by the
events of the siege of the City and by the events of the War--yet he retains
a certain lightness of heart and childlike way of viewing the world. He is
very observant and intelligent--altogether a delightful child that anyone
would be proud to know.
But this author also has a deft hand with the established main characters as
well, especially Sam. The interaction between Bergil and his hobbit charges
is lovely. I adore the way he gets to know Sam in the very beginning of the
story, and his perceptions and misperceptions about the hobbits. And his
interaction with Pippin, who is now his good friend, is very finely drawn. I
adore the protectiveness which Pippin seems to show towards Bergil. Aragorn
has so far only made a brief appearance, but that, too is lovely.
And the awe which Bergil shows towards Frodo, mixed with his childlike
practicality is just delightful. I daily check my friend's list for updates
on this one.

Such an emotion filled story about Thranduil saying good-bye to his mother
as she heads into the West.
LKK has a wonderful use of similes and metaphors to describe Nethwen's hair
for instance, "Her hair that always reminded him of full ripe blackberries
glistening in the summer's morning dew now seemed wan and flat."
And her understanding of how the King would try to appear strong always in
front of his people, yet also knows when he should show emotion at her
leaving, and that wonderful saying about 'tears being how the heart speaks'
is so evocative.
I also like how even as an adult, Thranduil discovers there are secrets kept
between a husband and wife, that their children do not know. What a lovely
romantic idea!
I think this story is very well written, with wonderful imagery and emotion
that it leaves the reader sighing at the end as they understand both
Nethwen's and Thranduil's decisions.

This story, along with Circlet of Orange Flowers, is masterfully written
using no dialogue tags at all, yet the author has managed to make it very
clear exactly who it is who is speaking and still manage to keep the
characters' very clearly in character.
The idea that Aragorn would call Thranduil 'effeminate' is hilarious, but
Thranduil's response is even better, and very much something I could see the
Elf King doing. Another hilarious vignette that keeps characters 'in
character.'

A lovely look into Eomer's return from Lothiriel's Point of View.
I especially enjoy seeing the Warrior-Eomer turning into Daddy-Eomer as he's
bathing with Elfwine, and the author has very deftly managed to show the
love Lothiriel holds for them both.
I appreciate the small details that make this story have so much depth: the
tiny wooden horse that Elfwine holds as he falls asleep -- of course, what
other toy would a Rohir child be given -- so appropriate; and the colour of
the bathwater, Lothiriel's reaction is so typical for a mother; and even the
changes Eomer notices when Lothiriel changes her gown for the evenings meal
... he sees her as the queen, which must be so hard to remember between a
husband and wife in a private setting like that.
Eokat manages to find simple scenes and describe them so well, and so
vividly that they become memorable and realistic.

This story completely surprised me. With every chapter, a new fact surfaces
and makes you wonder how many layers there are more in this chapter. The
author takes her time to write intriguing characters and just when you think
you figured it out, a new twist comes that leaves you wondering what just
happened. There is so much meaning in every word: it conveys the emotions
strongly. The tone is confident and powerful: the wording is refined.
Although this is a WIP, I cannot wait until the next chapter comes, curious
as I am and wanting to know what will happen to the, strongly developed,
female original character and Erestor, the seemingly unwilling hero. Canon
wise I am intrigued by the setting and choice of the Numenorean Queen, and
after further research it made sense to me why she choose this time period.
Challenging and incentive, I hope to read more stories from this author in
the future.

A humorous look into Eomer's point of view when Lothiriel is delivering
their child that is masterfully done by Eokat. The author seems to have a
natural insight into the Rohir King's mind and character and I can see this
being a real reaction to the impending event. Lines like "tried to wrap his
pregnant wife in down" and Lothiriel's quip about how much Rohirric she knew
(something I find in common with my own characters ... the women do tend to
pick up on their men's cursing.)
Once again, Eokat has taken a single event and turned it into a wonderful
story, filled with emotion and detail that stays with the reader. The short
flashbacks allow a glimpse of how Eomer thinks he is coping, and bears the
'guilt' of the title for the wonderful event. I have no doubt he will take
all the credit that it is a son his wife has born.

Eokat certainly has portrayed Eomer in character -- not making him a mincing
fop, but the stronghorse-lord that Tolkien intended the Rohirrim king to be,
I am certain. And I love that Eomer and Lothiriel did not fall in love at
first sight, but needed a little nudge in the right direction. And who
better to be nudged by than Faramir and Eowyn.
She has captured the emotional turmoil both Eomer and Lothiriel are in, as
well as the lighthearted concern of their kin. The language they speak seems
much truer to the time by having it reversed the way Tolkien did ... 'dark
have been my dreams of late.' springs to mind and Eokat has mirrored that
'Beowulf' style wonderfully.
Oh, and having Imrahil show up at the end and his reaction was priceless.

It must have been difficult to try to get into the mind of a horse, but
Eokat has ably managed to do just that.
" If he wants to play the stallion, he should go back to his own stall and
leave me to rest."
This brought a chuck to see a horse's perspective of how/where human's live,
but what an excellent thought.
While I have always pictured Lothiriel, being Imrahil's daughter, as being
an able horsewoman, Eokat's story made me start wondering if perhaps the
Gondor or Dol Amroth idea of riding would be considered to be 'novice'
compared to the Rohirrim who have such a wonderful connection to their
horses. I love stories that tweak my imagination and get me thinking like
that and examining the differences between the people.
Again the pattern of speech and the names are wonderfully researched and in
character. A lovely read.

Perelleth has written a lovely view of how she sees Celeborn end up in
Valinor using a very Elven love for his trees. She has captured his
weariness in fighting the death of his beloved forests in a manner that
rings so true for the destruction and clearcutting used even still that
would have so agrieved the Elves.
This line really seemed to capture Celeborn for me: "And now he sat there,
in the embrace of the mighty tree, feeling the powerful heart that still
drummed within the bark, hearing the deep voice that sang of things long
past, and the elf felt that his heart would break."
The idea of the trees that he tried to save being planted in Valinor in his
honour is a wonderful sentiment that is almost biblical in its concept.
The Long Defeat is a wonderfully told tale that captures Celeborn's love for
the trees beautifully and is true of the writing abilities of Perelleth.

This is one of my favourite Eokat stories because of the wide range of
emotions it captures.
Once again, Eokat stays within the Rohir style of speech: "Let us to home
sire" and keeps appropriate Rohirric names. But she also manages to capture
the range of emotions Eomer feels that day, from Eomer's despair at his
remembrances of Theodred's death and the losses of his past, to the gentle
thoughts of how he met Lothiriel and how she entered his life and changed
it, subtly, and breathed new life into his world. And then the softness as
he returns to his chambers and he tenderly tries not to wake his wife while
reflecting upon the miracle of the upcoming birth of their child. All
wonderfully captured and evocative.
A wonderfully romantic look at a man as the quintessential Rohir warrior who
can be 'manly' without being 'maudlin.'

This WIP is one of the most promising ones I recently read. It starts very
grim an realistic, but the author makes you want to click for the next
chapter. She writes a compelling and heartfelt story, I certainly feel for
this young hobbit that is put through so much terror. I find myself cheering
when the rescue comes and now the healing of the character can begin. What I
find very strong about this story is the way the author writes her main
character. It has a good build up and she shows what the character goes
through. The introductions of others feel natural and confident. The pacing
in the storytelling is excellent. It is obvious to me that the author enjoys
writing this story with so much care and love that I can imagine it will be
hard to write a final chapter (hopefully that will take a lot of chapters).

A excellent take on what if Aragorn never met Arwen. The dialogue between
Faramir and Aragorn is touching, and written with tact. For me this would be
a well written alternative on the Aragorn/ Arwen romance. The eye for detail
stands out in this story, making you wanting more.

One of the most touching moments in Lord of the Rings was the moment Faramir
gave Éowyn his mother's mantle. In this short piece, the author explores the
tender and emotional moment of Faramir while he finds and collects the
mantle for the new woman in his life. Isil gives us a great insight in
Faramir's emotion's and how he looks back on his troubled life. Treated with
care and respect, this is a beautiful vignette.

serving under Faramir, shortly before they are overrun by the enemy. I like

Another lovely glimpse into the workings of the Rohir King -- this time
having to face the prospect of giving his blessing for his daughter's
marriage. Eomer does everything he can to avoid it and I think Eokat has
wonderfully caught how this rugged man would react -- by initially trying to
avoid the whole situation. I especially liked how Lothiriel had to remind
him that their daughter was the same age she was when they married -- it is
so different from a parent's perspective and I imagine it must be harder for
a father to see his daughter wed than his sons.
Eokat truly does have a grasp on Eomer's and the Rohir's character, so
different from that of the Gondorian nobles. She continues to keep their
speech within the rhythmic confines Tolkien set out for us whereas many of
us, myself included, tend to fall into the more modern day patterns. And
once again, she has managed to give us a glimpse into their world without
getting into a multiple chapter story the way I would be tempted to do. Less
tells us so much more ... and now I have to learn from her how to do that.
Well done, Eokat!

Quirky (AKA Sophia Silfaery) writes a prose worthy of Tolkien's world. She
manages to develop layers, both within the characters' personalities but
also within the storyline itself.
I thought Marnie had looked into every aspect of Celeborn but this new young
writer offers a fresh perspective while maintaining the dignity that
Celeborn deserves without diminishing him.
Weariness is a lovely insight into a conversation far after ROTK, of
Celeborn and Maglor still upon ME, the last two elves, and realizing they
need to help each other to journey to Valinor. A unique perspective, and a
lovely insight into them both.
She truly is worthy of Marnie's bestowing the title of 'Lord Celeborn's
Bard' upon her.

Eokat manages to find simple scenes and describe them so well, and so
vividly that they become memorable and realistic.

and makes you wonder how many layers there are more in this chapter. The
author takes her time to write intriguing characters and just when you think
you figured it out, a new twist comes that leaves you wondering what just

Elfling angst... chilling elfling angst. This story is the first story
written by this author and I am impressed by the way the story is written.
To the point, it reveals everything. The inner emotions of those involved
and the strong bond between the twins is very well written.

I loved this short story, featuring an experienced soldier looks back on
serving under Faramir, shortly before they are overrun by the enemy. I like
the author's take on this, written from an unknown character and yet it
feels very vivid and real. The author pictures a beautiful picture of
Faramir's bravery, leaving the reader wondering if there is a sequal.
