Those who rebuke gods or their representatives don't normally end well, but
I can't but agree with the prince of Doriath, however young. It seems as if
the Valar have not done well by the rest of Middle-earth in sequestering
themselves and a portion of the Quendi in Aman.

I'd forgotten this fic, and am glad to have found it again. The irony cuts
so deep it *hurts*. Yes, this is a tour of pride, and I love the way Turgon
continually waxes hyperbolic, even to the point of saying "We have made
immortal what the Valar themselves could not." This is idolatry of the
highest sort, and absolute obsession with oneself and one's creations. This
is Noldorin self-centeredness (or any self-centeredness) writ large and
embellished nicely.
The interruptions that recall the fact that Turgon's companion is not
immortal, and is unable to understand the city in the way that Elves would,
are both brutal and yet darkly amusing. It's this niggling mortal whose
presence as mortal and as limitation every so often require to be
acknowledged, even in the midst of Turgon's rhapsodizing, who will overturn
what Turgon assumes is immortal, and it is he who will prove Turgon wrong by
becoming immortal himself, but not by the grace of Gondolin.
Wicked, pointed, and a perfect skewering of a uniquely elvish pride, this
story is well worth the read.

Ithilwen covers a lot of the issues I have when it comes to thinking about
what it would mean to enter a warrior culture and mindset, and given the
newness of the idea of an army or a guard in Aman, it fits Maedhros at this
stage of his life, I think. Later, I don't doubt it will change, but for the
moment, he has the requisite innocence and distance to ask himself what it
means that he has a gift for martial artistry. Protection and death are
inextricably entertwined here, and he cannot be the protector without being
at least willing to kill, even if he never does. That's a huge step to make,
and a morally troubling one that I assume would be very difficult to
overcome. Fear is also bound up with this choice, and it is given its proper
place: if there had been less fear among the Noldor, would it have come to
this? Clearly not. I'm not sure the execution of this fic entirely works for
me, but conceptually, it's dead on target.

The words "Gandalf" and "romance", when put in the same sentence and where
the latter belongs to the former, usually get a sigh if not a groan from me.
But this story does justice to the character, I think, of a Maia trying to
understand something that is absolutely new and in a sense, something that
is foreign to his particular kind of being. Although I can't say I grasp
what he sees in Irimien, the feeling and the interest are obviously genuine,
and the open-ended question mark that is the entire "affair" works very
well, I think. Elrond's characterization is also well-handled, I think, and
between the two of them, the mystery of love gets its due. It is "foolish",
and hearkens back to that idea that some adventures are such that the line
between wisdom and folly is so thin as to be indiscernible save to those
involved in the undertaking, or which only becomes visible to others after a
resolution has been reached.

A powerful look into a young, and reasonably innocent, elf's perspective of
being drawn into a battle and the discoveries of exactly what that means.
The feeling of the spear as it punctures the body bringing home to him
exactly what he has done was very well done, as was his end. I also like
that even within the killing that the characters show mercy, and
understanding, and that seems to bring an even more 'elven' characteristic
to the entire story.
Very rarely have I seen a first person present tense that works for me, but
this one does -- and I think it needs to be for it to hold the emotion and
strength that is needed to show how a warrior thinks in battle. And the fact
that it is a young elf, one who has never had to battle before makes it that
much more poignant.

This is a lovely story that gives us a glimpse into a conversation between
Boromir and Sam -- a pairing we do not often see. And Fadagaski has kept
Samwise in character well by displaying his innate ability to sum people up
-- in this case the cautious Boromir.
It's also nice to see a Boromir who isn't angst ridden or angry, one who is
cautious and very much a warrior, but also understanding and comes to care
for the hobbits.
This is a nice gapfiller and this scene is a very believable one -- I've
always got the feeling that Boromir did indeed care for the little hobbits
and this could have been the beginning of that relationship.

Bodkin has an insight to Celeborn that few other writers have shown ... and
in this work she also exhibits an understanding of a parents' love for their
child, and even more amusingly the trees ability to challenge Elrond. Her
writing is fresh and easy to ready, while managing to keep each character
'in-character'.
The idea of the family sitting in a tree, Elrond watching Celeborn with
Celebrian and remembering Arwen and feeling the depth of despair at never
seeing her again is especially touching. But Bodkin easily manages to
lighten that angst by having Celebrian reveal to Elrond that the trees 'try'
to make it difficult for him to climb them -- an lovely, and very Elven
idea.

This is a very different and fascinating take on the marriage of Pippin and
Diamond. Although the idea that their marriage was an arranged one has been
used, those stories usually make it to be an unhappy union. In this one,
though they were strangers to one another at the wedding, they gradually
learn to love one another deeply. There is a lot of depth to this character
of Diamond, which is very slowly revealed. And though they soon come to love
one another, there are still problems to overcome in the form of
misunderstandings and meddling relatives. At the time I write this review,
it is still a work in progress, though I expect it will be drawing to an end
soon.

But Bodkin easily manages to
lighten that angst by having Celebrian reveal to Elrond that the trees 'try'
to make it difficult for him to climb them -- an lovely, and very Elven
idea.

This really tickled me. I could just imagine wee!Pip worrying about the
chicken, and Merry helping him out for Pippin's sake, not the chicken's! The
ending was cute.

Humorous take on how Boromir's responsibilities had he lived to become
Steward might not have been welcome.

This is very cute. I like Sam's patience, and Frodo's enthusiasm.

At the time I write this review,
it is still a work in progress, though I expect it will be drawing to an end
soon.
