A very sweet and original interpretation. I have come across very few fics
in which Frodo is in love with Rosie, but this one is unusual in the way it
shows his selflessness shining through. It emphasizes that quality of
Frodo--the same quality that led him on a seemingly hopeless quest across
the world for the sake of others.

This is an amazing story, in some ways a gap-filler, as it tells the tale of
the Legolas and Gimli from Moria until they leave Lorien more fully than
JRRT does. We see the events as they occurred in canon, but from the inside
POV of both Gimli and Legolas. The way in which, first respect, and then
friendship, is forged between them, and the way in which we see each of them
groping through the prejudices of their races towards an understanding of
one another is nothing less than brilliant. I am primarily a hobbit-fancier,
but there are a few non-hobbit oriented fics which have truly gripped me.
This is one of them.

This is a neat extrapolation of the line from Faramir at Henneth Annun,
about how he didn't love the sword for its brightness. I can so see a moment
like this happening, especially if Faramir had a reputation as a student and
a bit of a loremaster (which I think he would). But now I want to see a
prequel drabble -- the first time a less learned ranger hears Faramir
singing about a more obscrue moment of history, and realises that not all
scholars hide in libraries. Even without that aspect, though, this worked
very well; it was a nice characterisation of Faramir before the Ring War.

Nrink weaves words of magic, no less than the embroiderers of the famous
mantle gifted so tenderly in this tale. Her words sing, and whisper, and
capture exquisite visions:
"You should have seen him, skirling like a curlew round the room, and Aerin
scolding and running after like a mad thing."

This story focuses on a single scene, the gift of the mantle. Descriptions
of family life with a newborn, and a lively older brother, are well crafted
and realistic. Nrink's amazing storytelling gift is in the rich descriptive
detail, and the fabulous use of language: "what her husband called her
singing magic - a soft dark humming that was the whispering of the sea on a
moonlit night."

Her description of Denethor, awed and thankful for the happiness she has
brought him, is heartbreaking for all of us who know how their story will
end.

One of the loveliest contributions to the "kinder, gentler Denethor"
subgenre.

Very seldom have I come across stories dealing with Denethor and his sons
after the death of Finduilas. This lovely, yet somewhat somber vignette
provides a bittersweet reminder of the fears all parents must face.

When have we ever seen the Steward and his young sons on an outing? Both
boys are drawn quite true to character - bored, restless Boromir, rewarded
for his patience; quiet, curious Faramir, exploring on his own. When Faramir
discovers a fascinating artifact, he runs to show his father; as Denethor
realizes the danger to his young son, he must watch in horror (as parents
often do) until the boy is safe.

Denethor's powerful, anguished thought - This dread will I know for each day
until I die - is a timeless, universal cry, shared by parents in all Ages of
the world.

Told entirely from Sam's viewpoint, this rich and lovely tale chronicles
Frodo's life from his arrival as an orphan at Bag End, until he takes ship
for the West, leaving tender words of encouragement for Sam and the others
left behind.

Imaginative and intricately detailed, this tale is like a exquisite tapestry
of Frodo and Sam's life together. Larner has postulated for Frodo a rich
life of service to the shire and its inhabitants far beyond what is covered
by the events of the trilogy; and so the tale magnificently "fills in the
corners", the missing details which we hunger for.

The premise of the story is simple - A ranger patrol, led by young Faramir,
is overrun and captured by orcs; Boromir organizes their rescue. In hands of
a skilled writer, though, this becomes a tale of action, horror, suspense,
and humor. Brimming with carefully researched detail, exquisite description,
and very finely drawn characters (both canonical and original) this fine
tale never wanders down the twisted path to A-U, nor descends into the
pathos of hurt/comfort, but remains true to its roots as a gripping
adventure.

Probably the most outstanding feature of this tale is its fine
characterizations: Boromir is young, somewhat reckless, but imaginative and
resourceful. His impetuous decision to steal some boats and ambush the orcs
who have captured Faramir and his companions is completely in character.
Faramir, badly wounded, is still able to inspire his companions to
unimagined acts of strength and courage. Original characters, such as
Boromir's longsuffering second-in-command / bodyguard, Haldan; and cousin,
Eldahil, serve as excellent counterpoints (an occasional comic relief). Even
the orcs have their own personalities, rivalries which are subtle but
integral to the plot.

Special recognition must be made of Branwyn's characterization of Denethor:
certainly not the cartoonish madman of the film; her Denethor is a loving
and compassionate father who has felt himself forced to present a powerful,
controlled persona to his people. Every parent can empathize with his
despair, when he believes Faramir to be dead; and his elation and then worry
when he discovers his child alive, though severely wounded.

Another noteworthy feature of the tale is the meticulous research and wealth
of detail. Fight scenes are realistically and accurately described to
provide marvelous visualizations. Medicinal herbs; structural and
architectural features of a surgical room; Gondorian hangover cures fill out
the corners of the tale. Faramir's feverish dreams (particularly an
exquisite vision of stargazing expedition, as a small child wrapped securely
in his father's arms) provide lovely stories-within-the story, each of them
as intricately detailed as the whole.
