Wonderfully original, creepy, funny, and disgusting all at once - a perfect
example of the black-humor-artistry!

An angsty teenage orc - what genius! And so reminiscent of any teenage human
boy, too: "My boss hates me. My co-workers are jerks, and besides, they
don't like me. Everybody else is getting laid, why not me?" Just proves
there isn't a whole lot of difference between humans and orcs, after all!

The stereotypical annoying-teen-fangirl was right-on, as well. Perfectly
realized caracters and an outrageous plot brimming with gory detail provide
an imaginative, fractured fairy tale.

How apt that Sting was made by Maeglin as his own personal dagger and it
ended up in first Bilbo's then Frodo's hands and it did slay spiders and cut
their webs with all the ease the smith anticipated.

I wonder if this was also the dagger he threatened young Earendil with?
Maybe? Who knows, I suppose, but it's very relevant that Maeglin made the
dagger. And lucky too, or neither Bilbo nor Frodo would have survived the
giant spiders.

Forlorn hope: An arduous or nearly hopeless undertaking
Though a signifcant departure from book canon, Peter Jackson’s invention of
a Gondorian suicide mission to retake Osgiliath has inspired many writers.
However, few have handled the scence with such painful grace and loveliness
as Kortirion, in this poem.

The rhythm of the words themselves seem to echo somber drumbeats. The first
verse is most evocative of the scene from the film: the silent prayers of
the onlookers; the strewing of flowers; the tight-lipped faces of the
soldiers. We have all watched this heartbreaking scene many times, but it
has been brought to life in all its anguished power here.

In the second verse, Kortirion’s exquisite wordsmithy takes flight. The
masterful metaphor –We had become steel and iron- is repeated, reinforced,
through the use of words and expressions related to armorcraft: blades,
tempered steel, scabbards, sheathes.. The juxtaposition of the wreathes of
flowers, gifted to them as a farewell, and the wreath and crown of rubies –
the martyr’s crown they will each soon wear – is as heartrending, as is
their desire for eternal rest in Ithilien, the moon-land.

The utter beauty and sorrow of this piece leaves me breathless each time I
read it.

A joyous tale, written in a style very evocative of the Professor’s work,
brings many favorite characters together for a brief reunion. Vivid
description and lively dialogue, well in character, make this a most
enjoyable tale. Butterbur has not changed a bit, while Nob is a bit older,
more responsible, and two steps (at least) ahead of his master! I think the
Professor would be very proud of this.

One of the great pleasures of involvement in an awards activity is the
opportunity to go back and revisit old favorites; to discover them anew with
fresh eyes. Such has been my happy experience with “Fallen”, a story I have
followed with great interest and enjoyment since its very first appearance.

This tale focuses almost entirely on original characters; canon characters
such as Eowyn or Merry playing only minor, peripheral parts. Aliana’s
characters are realistic and perfectly drawn, whether frightened or
resigned, making difficult choices or making sweet rolls. Her descriptions
of the House and its staff, atmospheric rather than detailed, perfectly
convey the many moods of the last defenders and supporters of the city.

Aliana, one of our most talented young authors, writes with grace and wisdom
far beyond her years. We can look forward with great anticipation to the
continuation of this tale, and many others.

Starlingly original, sensual without being unnecessarily graphic, full of
vivid falconry images. I loved the comparison of Eowyn to a falcon, an
eagle, a ghost owl – a fierce and beautiful, untamed creature. I
particularly appreciated the vision of Eowyn as a strong young woman,
determined to keep control of her body, and to give herself when and to whom
she chose.

The author’s choice of Hama, a good man and well known to us, was masterful
– a mature man, loyal servant of the king, sworn to serve to whatever end;
yet (an interesting twist on a common situation) a lonely man who knows and
accepts that his body is being used by his lover for her own ends. Hama has
always known that Eowyn would never be his; that she was destined for far
greater deeds, yet we still gasp and share his anguish as Eowyn cries out
another man’s name.

It seems very strange to write a review that will have more words than the
piece itself, but I found this haiku sequence to be absolutely gorgeous,
perfect in every way. Gimli himself is a creature of few words, so it makes
perfect sense that he would choose haiku as as art form , and it's quite
wonderful to imagine him carefully crafting this tribute to the Lady who has
enchanted him so.

I never realized how difficult haiku is, until I tried to write it myself.
The author has captured Gimli perfectly and his yearning so well, in so few
words.

A very sweet story that captures perfectly the sense of a child being
introduced to an important family friend. Farry is childlike without being
grating; and the friendship between Pippin and Faramir is very well drawn:
respect, and affection, and their delight in being together again.

I particularly enjoyed the hints of stories-within-the-story: "the
lass who wins back her forgetful lover had a King as the lover, not a Thain,
and had almonds instead of walnuts..." These hints added another wonderful
layer to the story.

A very powerful depiction of Denethor's anger, pain, and desolation at the
impending loss of his Finduilas.

Using the strikethroughs was a very effective device, drawing in the reader

the perfect combination of words.)

I don't often read poetry, but I found this was very accessible, and not just

I was amazed, several years back, to find two of my favorite pastimes – Lord
of the Rings and professional hockey – had been engagingly combined into an
outrageously entertaining website, The Dom-Land Caribou. The concept of an
entire Middle-Earth Hockey Association, with a regular season, playoffs, an
astoundingly named home arena, and a championship cup, provided both deep
chuckles and household-rousing belly laughs.

The addition of an exhibition game with the all-stars of the wizarding
world, the Hogwarts combined quidditch teams, was a surprise and a delight.
All the characters are realistically written (considering that the whole
idea is far, far AU) and the combination of hockey and quidditch rules is
imaginative but feasible. In a year without professional hockey, this story
and others in the series helped to fill the great hole in my life formerly
occupied by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Bubbles has announced that this season for the ‘Bou is the last; they (and
she) will be sorely missed by wacked- out Lord of the Rings and hockey fans
worldwide.

We’ve read, heard, and seen the Riders of Rohan heading off to battle
singing and laughing in the face of danger. We know little of the common
folk of Rohan, so this story brings some of them alive for us in the form of
a devoted but unskilled embroiderer; a loving husband who fears his wife’s
tongue more than he fears battle; and his loyal comrades, laughing and
high-spirited as they ride to war under a somewhat unconventional banner. A
whole world of a village, told simply in 100 words.

Cultures collide when Faramir and Eowyn admire a lunar eclipse and seek to
understand its mystery. Faramir, representing a sophisticated and
technologically advanced culture, has a somewhat soulless explanation, while
Eowyn, from a more primitive tradition (where myths and legends are still
vividly alive) shares one of her people's beliefs.

A particularly haunting element of this drabble is when Faramir quotes his
father, admiringly; then remembers suddenly his loss and grief. "My father
says--" Faramir stopped; with the slightest catch in his voice, he carefully
spoke again. "My father said the darkness was merely a shadow..." I think we
probably have all shared that experience, and can empathize with Faramir in
that moment.

A textbook example of a drabble series – seven independent stories,
interwoven but freestanding - allows us to follow Finduilas from her first
meeting with her future husband; through the joyful days of her married life
and the birth of her sons; and on to illness and death.

“…the Steward’s son," they told me, "is a strange man with eyes full of
bitter thoughts.” Ellisande’s heartbreaking descriptions of Denethor’s pain
and desolation make this tale so memorable. Throughout it all, Finduilas’s
love remains constant; though she expresses regret for leaving her family
bereft, there is no bitterness for her loss, only achingly expressed
sadness.

From the framework of Tolkien’s poetry and prose, Nrink has created another
richly detailed tapestry. The vision of Denethor, driven by the needs of
political expediency to woo and marry unseen the Maid of Dol Amroth, is an
unusual one – he’s usually portrayed as cold and masterful. He is prepared
to do his duty, but unprepared to be dumbstruck with love at first sight for
the exquisite Finduilas.

Finduilas, too, is brought to life as more than a dutiful, obedient
daughter, but as a sensitive and empathic young woman who is receptive to
the mysterious spark that enchants her with love for this solemn, dour man..

Of special note here, in addition to the marvelously inventive descriptions
of holiday traditions, are the lovely ritual words of betrothal, carefully
researched from celtic, druidic, and wiccan sources, which make the story
come even more to glorious, vivid life.

A lovely companion piece to “No Peace for the Living”, by the same author.
Faramir takes a brief respite to tend to some housekeeping (and I mean that
quite literally!) matters of his own.

We have a refreshing view of Faramir doing what he loves – organizing books,
pausing occasionally to read and ponder both the minor details of his
library, and, on a larger scale, the ages- old labors of the line of
Stewards, waiting, protecting, remaining faithful to their charge, no matter
what.

What is particularly intriguing about this tale is that no time context is
given. Is Faramir a young adult, achieving his first understanding of the
responsibilities entrusted to his family? Is he a man grown, escaping even
briefly from the military duties to search for a remembered volume? Is he
now the Steward of a kingdom at peace, finally having the opportunity to
explore interests he had long ago set aside? A restful, peaceful, but
thought-provoking tale.

Suddenly bereft of the two powerful anchors of his life, brother and father,
Faramir
ponders the age-old duties of the House of Hurin . Marriage, family,
princedom are still in the future at the moment of this tale, and so there
is only mourning for what has been lost, and acceptance of what is yet to
come.

Finely captured details – the staleness of the air within the tomb;
Faramir’s almost absent-minded addition of more repair work to the
Steward’sresponsibilities; the message written in silver runes on black
lebethron: Duty, Honor, Wisdom – provide us a clear and somber, but
realistic depiction of Faramir, adrift and lonely but calmly accepting his
heritage and responsibilities.

A lush, gorgeously romantic vision. It’s not relevant, really, that the
star-crossed lovers are Boromir and Theodred; the tale is exquisitely apt
for any pair of doomed pair. The hours together are too short; this night is
all that is left to them, for on the morrow they must part.

One element of simbelmyne’s writing that I find particularly powerful is the
utter lack of any element of guilt or shame in the pairing. The lovers are
joyous when reunited, peaceful when sated, and accepting of the
inevitability of their fates. They take their joy when they can; a
refreshing change amidst the angst of the genre, and part of the lovely
perfection of the world simbelmyne has gifted us.

One of the most beautiful stories I’ve read in a long time, from an
exquisitely talented author whose works are all too rare.

The unifying theme – the songs of the Rohirrim, rich and rolling as the
green hills and plains - provides a rich tapestry upon which the threads of
Lothíriel’s new life is stitched: a new bride in a land of strange people
and customs; a new queen learning the history and heritage she has embraced;
a mother-to-be watching her husband bond almost magically and mystically
with their unborn child.

“…his hands cradling the swell of her belly as he weaves a new verse into
the history of his people.” A lovely depiction of one of Middle-Earth’s few
truly happy, joyous couples.

I love the way you spin this tale. It is a dark time in Numenor, and yet
there's hope of love, of a future, and a better life for the Faithful of
Numenor. Very well written!

Kielle delivers a pointed, hysterical critique of slash clichés. Not only is
there a wet cave, not only is there an injured man to be treated, not only
are the only available bandages the remains of someone's shirt, and not only
is it cold requiring "sharing of body heat", but the two characters are
fully aware of the incriminating circumstances. As Faramir puts it:

"I'm going to be in bad shape unless you bind it up, and where there's
wound-binding in isolated caves there is always, and I do mean always, sex
before sunrise. Count on that. I'm the one who knows how to read, remember."

What follows from this cultural dig is a steady escalation of innuendo as to
who would kill whom for trifling with either Éomer or Faramir: Elessar,
Boromir, Gimli, Imrahil, Legolas, and the list goes on, expanding to gossipy
discussion of rumors surrounding other possible (and coincidentally
poopular) slash pairings, with the time frames, opportunities, and personal
tastes involved analyzed in a humorous manner that highlights how ridiculous
some plot contrivances are. It escalates until this point:

'"I know as little as you, there. But surely no wild tale is as ridiculous
as that of dwarf and elf?"

To Faramir's surprise, Eomer's cocky smile froze. "Ah. *cough* Actually..."'

At which the reader giggles uncontrollably. Kielle's timing when she threw
that one into the mix was perfect. I won't spoil the ending, but suffice it
to say, this fic is a must-read for any slash fan. After all the drippy
angst we put the characters through, we owe it to ourselves to read this and
laugh at what we're capable of. Well done once again, Kielle!
