"He spoke to her of a garden they would build across the river."
This very simple tale encompasses the essence of Faramir and Eowyn's hopes
for the future - peace in Ithilien, and the home they would build together.
Even the title itself brings to mind a lovely vision of the union of this
perfectly destined pair.

One of the most original, entertaining pieces I have ever come across. Take
equal parts Tolkien and Homer, shake in a dash of Christopher Logue and a
smattering of Monty Python, and if you are lucky, you might come out with
something half as outrageously, laugh-out-loud funny, but ultimately painful
and heartbreaking as this. Aeneid has taken a missing scene and made it
completely her own - I can't imagine it any other way now.

What an amazing tale Aeneid has spun, as intricate as a spider's web! From
the rather common fanfic conceit of "Boromir Lives!" she has concocted a
rich mixture of high drama, interspersed with adventure, some humor, and
romance. Major and minor canon characters as well as well-drawn and
fascinating original characters provide rich detail, and some welcome
lightness, to the dark tale. So many elements come into play here- prose;
poetry; Tolkien's immense and well-loved creation; The Odyssey; Aeneid's own
amazing storytelling skills.
Boromir's pain and guilt, of course, are at the forefront. Shocked beyond
belief by his own betrayal of the fellowship, and then his survival of the
orc attack, Boromir descends into madness and drink, what we of a more
analytical age identify as post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism.
Aeneid's depiction of this was so terrifyingly painful and realistic that I
was left breathless, in tears. The reactions of those around him - the
hobbits, the King, his brother Faramir - are entirely realistic, in that
they are enabling, rather than confrontational. It is Boromir himself, when
he reaches his shocking "rock bottom", who must choose to fight for his
sanity, and to regain his lost honor.

implementing a ruthless plan for the domination of Middle-earth. Original,

fate of the members of the Fellowship; terror, subservience, oblivion, blind

Marvelous descriptions and vivid, realistic characterizations. This tale is
lovely on so many levels: the young, green Aragorn, most junior member of
his patrol, boyish yet wise beyond his years; the exquisitely imagined
mettare customs celebrated by those who wait patiently, fearfully at home as
well as those still afield; and, perhaps most painfully, the parallel
between those in our own age who wander dangerous paths in the Wild,
serving, protecting, with meager reward or thanks. This simple, heartrending
tale is a salute to the Rangers of our day as well.

pestering Mithrandir with a thousand questions; Boromir and Faramir's
parting at the gates of Minas Tirith; and Faramir's pre-nuptial jitters are
described with warmth, believability, and charm.
"The Bower" merits special mention as one of the loveliest descriptions of
"the morning after" that I have ever read. The comparison of Faramir to a
great, stretching, purring cat - wow! Perfect! And the vision of Eowyn
watching her husband and son frolicking in the lake is so very endearing.

What a happy surprised to rediscover it here!
I particularly enjoyed Faramir's laughing response to Aragorn's description
of his first meeting with Boromir. How painful that memory must have been
for Aragorn, and how neatly that pain was eased by Faramir's words! From the
standpoint of time and distance, Faramir is able to help his King see a bit
of the ridiculousness of the scene.
A number of movieverse scenes are fleshed out lovingly here, allowing us to
remember our beloved Boromir once more, and imagine how his pain could have
been eased, somewhat, had Aragorn been able to overcome his reticence and
fear. Very beautifully and movingly done.

What a powerful vision of Finduilas! No shrinking violet, she: a young woman
certain of her desires, and certain of the matching passion she sees in her
chosen one. There is certainly a fine undercurrent of eroticism here, but I
like that in the Maid of Dol Amroth, the way she challenges Denethor to
match her vibrant love of life. It's easy to understand, based on this
vision, how he was captivated, and also why he was left so lonely and
desolate when she was torn from him.

fairly adventurous reader, I read on.
I should have been repelled by the very first few paragraphs, where Grima

I should have been repelled by Grima's memory of performing sexual service
for Theoden, but because by this point I had been completely ensnared by
Mimine's seductive prose, I read on.
By the time I reached the first sexual encounter between Eomer and Grima, I
was hooked. To say that the story is one of my greatest guilty pleasures is
a vast understatement: I like to read slash where pretty men have
semi-romantic encounters, but this tale has nothing of that . This tale is
ugly, and violent, and stomach-churning; but also tremendously erotic and

wench at Edoras ponders the object of her affection. The parallels between
Grima, cunning and resourceful but treated with contempt, and the kitchen
maid, also clever and devious in achieving her ends, are very skillfully
drawn. A very unexpected pairing, but one that speaks well, I think, to Real

useful.
I also found Haldir's confusion about his sexual feelings to be very
realistic, like those of a human teen. Even in our own age, many of those
who have the same sorts of thoughts and desires are, unfortunately, made to
feel shameful about them, just as Haldir does. How sad for him (and for us)

thoughtfully recounted. Boromir overhears a soldier's oath, but when he
tries to use it himself, arouses his father's ire over a perceived insult to
the history of Gondor and the line of kings.
Celandine has gotten the details perfectly- the playful interaction between
Boromir and his toddling brother; Denethor's quiet explanation of his anger
and punishment; Finduilas's calm intervention between the two. The vision of
Boromir's efforts to converse in Sindarin, eclipsed by Faramir's amazing
competence at such an early age is very sweet. Boromir's promise to use
Faramir's skills and counsel when he is steward is, of course, quite a
bittersweet scene for those of us who know how the tale will end.

A deceptively simple, yet elegant demonstration of the value of hard work as
a distraction from physical and emotional pain. The vision of Faramir:
captain, nobleman, and Steward-apparent, drowning his sorrow and pain in a
task as uncomplicated and mindless as weeding, is actually quite powerful.
The contrast of the blood-red poppies, and his perhaps-unconscious
demonstration of hope - or else, why weed a garden? are marvelous, subtle
touches.

equal parts Tolkien and Homer, shake in a dash of Christopher Logue and a
smattering of Monty Python, and if you are lucky, you might come out with

What an amazing tale Aeneid has spun, as intricate as a spider's web! From
the rather common fanfic conceit of "Boromir Lives!" she has concocted a
rich mixture of high drama, interspersed with adventure, some humor, and
romance. Major and minor canon characters as well as well-drawn and
fascinating original characters provide rich detail, and some welcome
lightness, to the dark tale. So many elements come into play here- prose;
poetry; Tolkien's immense and well-loved creation; The Odyssey; Aeneid's own
amazing storytelling skills.
It is Boromir himself, when
he reaches his shocking "rock bottom", who must choose to fight for his
sanity, and to regain his lost honor.

lovely on so many levels: the young, green Aragorn, most junior member of

well as those still afield; and, perhaps most painfully, the parallel
between those in our own age who wander dangerous paths in the Wild,

I particularly enjoyed Faramir's laughing response to Aragorn's description
of his first meeting with Boromir. How painful that memory must have been
for Aragorn, and how neatly that pain was eased by Faramir's words! From the
standpoint of time and distance, Faramir is able to help his King see a bit
of the ridiculousness of the scene.
A number of movieverse scenes are fleshed out lovingly here, allowing us to
remember our beloved Boromir once more, and imagine how his pain could have

certain of her desires, and certain of the matching passion she sees in her

like that in the Maid of Dol Amroth, the way she challenges Denethor to

maid, also clever and devious in achieving her ends, are very skillfully

useful.
I also found Haldir's confusion about his sexual feelings to be very
realistic, like those of a human teen. Even in our own age, many of those

feel shameful about them, just as Haldir does.

Full of rich and lovely detail, this tale of young Faramir's holiday with
his Dol Amroth relatives is both charming and heartrending. Isabeau has
brought Imrahil's familily to such vivid life it's impossible for me to
imagine them, now, any other way. The wit, humor, and realism of the
characters, as well as the marvelous descriptions of Gondor's holiday
traditions, make this a wonderful feast for the imagination. Sweet Faramir's
pleasure in his uninhibited, loving relatives is gently contrasted with his
sedate, lonely home life, making for a bittersweet tale which ends joyfully.

A very lovely, very feasible AU vision of what might have been, as Lord
Steward Boromir swears fealty to his King, to the loving admiration of his
brother. Simple, yet very reminisicent of the Professor's writing.

Gorgeous word pictures in a simple vision of Faramir's daily labors to
restore Ithilien as a garden.

The contrast of the blood-red poppies, and his perhaps-unconscious
demonstration of hope - or else, why weed a garden? are marvelous, subtle
touches.

Pippin as hero-worshipper, exploring Boromir's chambers in search of a few
last fragments to add to his memories; A deceptively simple, but painful and
bittlesweet vision.
