A companion piece to the exquisite “Fallen”, this tale provides tiny,
perfect cameo-like portraits of some of those who await their doom at the
Houses of Healing. Each character is perfectly realized, providing the
barest hints of lovely and well constructed histories (which I sincerely
hope Aliana will write for us, one day). I’m continually awed by the beauty
and delicacy of Aliana’s wordsmithy, and look forward to great things from
this gifted young artist.

A well crafted tale of Faramir’s awakening in the Houses of Healing.
Pippin’s tactful and comforting explanations of the momentous events
surrounding the siege, skillfully melded with Faramir’s own prophetic dreams
and fevered memories, raise this tale far above other depictions of the
scene.

A sad and lovely tale, the main focus of which, to my mind, was the desire
to continue fighting even up to the edge of despair. There are so many
dimensions to Acacea’s story – a soldier reflecting upon the loss of a
revered commander; a brother pondering the losses suffered by his own
family, as others, in defense of their city; a man of Gondor considering the
impact of The Great River as mother, protector, and now, bearer of sorrowful
tidings.
The added layer of the tale of the frog in the well – mentioned only in
passing here, but told in depth in another of Acacea’s stories - contributes
to the bittersweet aspects here, as a Gondorian folk tale carries special
significance to those to continue to battle against persistent odds.

For those of us who have long pondered the description of Boromir as “taking
no wife”, this exquisite tale provides quite a plausible explanation.
Isabeau’s Boromir is thoughtful, gracious, and noble in every way, but not
stirred by women. Seeking a discreet partner in order to fully explore his
options, he discovers affection, respect, and fulfillment with an old
friend.
Isabeau’s tale is at once both cool, matter-of-fact, and lushly romantic.
Her eroticism is just vivid enough to provide pleasurable reading, but not
so graphic as to totally squick the unwary or uninitiated. Boromir is, well,
Boromir, but I’d love to have a casting suggestion for Andrahar, to complete
my mental pictures! A quite powerful and satisfying tale by a skilled
artist.

discarded shyness upon meeting a gentlemanly stranger; her girlish chatter

On a hot summer evening, seven survivors of the battle for Osgiliath seek to
calm their trembling nerves at a favorite tavern. Each one carries his own
brutal, terrifying memories of the day, and Aenied’s incomparable
storytelling skills has made each tale breathtaking in its realism. She has
skillfully bound each tale together with warmth, compassion, and humor,
reflecting the relationships of the men to each other, their captain, and
his young brother.
I’m delighted once again to see fanfiction moving towards well developed
original characters who flesh out the many gaps left by the professor.
Aeneid has taken the bare structure that was given to us and built a new

It's very easy to imagine the scene depicted in this tale: early evening;
lamplight:Faramir dozing by the fire; the uncomplicated friendliness of
Aragorn smoking his pipe. Altariel has made it even more lovely by adding
Faramir's dream, wherein he still seeks his father's love; and balancing
this vision with Faramir's vow of fealty to his new liege-lord. It's
particularly meaningful that Faramir chooses to make his vow in private,
swearing his life and service to the one who has given his life back to him.
A very moving vision of these two heroes.

That was one of the best efforts to show Orcs as anything but murderous evil

A dying female orc, survivior of the battle for Minas Tirith, newly
delivered of a litter of cubs, recalls with pride the glories of her people,
and her own unique contributions to her society.
What amazing skill to take such an incredibly original character and bring
her to life with such vividness that we empathize with her! Details of
everyday life, the culture and heritage of the orc-hai, and the
contributions of the common orc to the war effort are described colorfully
and with great zest.
This is completely new territory for any writer, as far as I know, but
AmandaK has made Drukh Skullgrinder from Nurn a completely believeable,
almost-but-not-quite sympathetic character.

Quite a wonderfully creepy and disturbing tale of Grima's first meeting with
Eowyn. The details are perfect: the shadowy hall; the fabulous tapestries,
fascinating to an imaginative child; Grima's physical infirmaties.
The description of Grima in shadow, seeking to reveal himself bit by bit so
as to avoid frightening Eowyn, produces quite powerful mental pictures.
Grima's character is somewhat teasingly portrayed: is he a pedophile,
presented with a new obsession, or a lonely man, seeking only companionship
and affection?
All the dialog, especially Theoden's comforting distraction of the children
with tales of a new colt, is wonderfully realistic. I had not ever read
anything by this author, but I will most definitely seek out more.

There's something so wonderfully matter-of-fact throughout this whole piece,
but especially in this line. It reminds me of the attitude of the father in
the movie "My Girl". Deaht is a part of daily life, and Dwim's charwoman
does not flinch. She goes about her Duty. But then we see that she is not
jaded: "Thank you, good sirs, for having lain down for us all." She is still
affected, even if she has learned to suppress it. I can see her very easily
being a part of Tolkien's Middle-earth.

Although the focus of the story is on Celeborn, the most fascinating and
captivating element of the presentation of Sauron as Annatar, the Lord of
Gifts. It’s quite easy to see how Celeborn could have swayed by his soft,
reasonable words, very much a serpent, speaking reasonably and logically to
he whom he wished to beguile. After countless ages Celeborn, feeling once
again the lure of the Ring (and the tiny seed of discontent planted by
Annatar) contemplates what he would do with it, had he the opportunity.

make it all turn on a case of mistaken identity that throws the best laid

of the characters. Aragorn gets to play the last man in the know, perpetual
victim-participant of others' plotting; Gimli aggressively forges ahead with
his plans with single-minded intensity; Pippin as usual manages to drive
Merry to the brink of sanity; and Bergil, well, he's a cute kid, but someone

It's disturbing to imagine John Cleese as Celeborn, but he's the only one
tall enough for it. The movie has certainly been responsible for more than
one moan of "That's NOT how it happened in the books!" and several fics
exploring just that discrepancy. This is a more fully developed sketch than
many, and it works very well, especially if read with one's best Cleese
voice.

Other than the VSDs, this was the original classic Lord of the Rings
metafic. Despite the grammatical issues, Camilla Sandman succeeds in
pointedly demonstrating that fandom itself is fertile ground for humor. With
her finger on the pulse of fandom and a healthy sadistic streak required of
all instructors, she assembles the characters of Lord of the Rings to teach
their fanfic writers a lesson or ten. "Learning through pain" is her mantra,
as students are put through the wringer by Elrond, lord of the year-long
reading list and resident canon-nazi; by Boromir, who is only too happy to
debunk fangirl dreams of becoming the greatest warrior in the time it takes
to pick up a sword; and hormones are forced to bend to the rules as Sam and
Frodo, Gimli and Legolas, attempt to convey the intricacies of platonic male
bonding.
This is the fic that gave the fandom the term "nuzgûl" as a vampiric bunny,
the result of the tragic misspelling of "Nazgûl". It gave us grammar boot
camp, mini-balrogs, and the Witch-wall. It gave us a Middle-earth that,
whether inanimate or not, delights in fighting back against the whims of
fanfic authors, incorporating the laws of narrative comedy and/or Murphy's
Laws into the fabric of its being on a whole new level. Contrivance is put
to work in such a way that it deserves applause for once.
And Gimli finally got the girl. Bravo, Miss Cam!

Oh ouch. Oh the pain. Yes, this is quite the little set of badfic, but the
author being Morgoth makes it hysterical. The little summaries of what's
going on in M-e, his "inspirations" for writing, the legal problems with
Fëanor, the obvious and pathological hatred of Sauron (who dies in every
story he appears in, and there is literarily much rejoicing each time), the
invention of "the Other Place" whence girls come to Middle-earth—these make
what would be unbearably painful fics into comedy gold.

A quite powerful and satisfying tale by a skilled

lamplight:Faramir dozing by the fire; the uncomplicated friendliness of
Aragorn smoking his pipe.

Although the focus of the story is on Celeborn, the most fascinating and

Oh now this is just priceless. I remember the cartoons Disney did of Casey
at the Bat, and I could hear the whole thing in that voice as I read this.
Well done to put these two unlikely contests into contact, Celtic Bard.
