I had posted this on the staff site and no one replied other than
Marta on a personal email. Can we get an official decision about
switching of categories now that voting season is upon us and votes
are being finalized?

I saw that Ainae switched Daw's A spring of Joy from Incomplete to
complete -- luckily the reviews for that one were based upon it being
completed. However, I have a story (Life in the Angle) that is in the
Romance: Incomplete section that will be completed before the end of
voting season. The votes/reviews on it mention that it is incomplete
and they are final so they cannot be changed. This may happen with
other stories as well since it is still six weeks before the end of
voting season.

If the story gets changed now to complete, shouldn't the reviewers be
able to adjust their reviews? (which I know isn't possible) So
shouldn't we just leave the story in the Incomplete section?

would it be possible for the admin to manually change the final votes
to tenative when a fic is moved from incomplete to complete? That
would allow reviews to update their vote if they wished, and if they
didn't, it would still be counted in the final tally. I don't
*think* that there are going to be so many being completed over the
next month that it should be too much of a problem - if it is possible.

Well first , sorry about missing the staff post. I'm lucky to be checking
just two of my inboxes these days. My personal one and this one.

As for stories being completed, a post should be made here so everyone can
see it. Anybody who votes on MEFA2005 is a member here.

Then we can figure out what to do about editing those reviews if the viewer
wishes to. Or even if we should. We may want to put that to a vote. It's
not just about the story being completed and reviewed when it was
incomplete, but the score and is it fair to let someone change a final
review and thus the score.

chapters back from my beta's. And Sulriel's review refers to it as
incomplete. So now what?

I've also just noticed that both Daw's and my stories details are
still showing as incomplete, and mine is showing as a novella -- which
is what it was when it was first entered, it is now a complete
full-length novel of 25 chapters. The liaisons can't change the
details anymore ...

How Works in Progress were handled really should have been decided
upon way before voting season and should be discussed during the post
mortem so this doesn't happen again. As an author I can't say I'm
particularly happy at the moment.

I thought you'd written it was complete. I'll move it back as soon as my
internet connectionn let's me.

were now finalized saying 'work in progress' knowing they can't be

This is spelled out and the only difference between this year's and last
year's is the MEFA2005 site which allowed members to set their reviews to
Final BEFORE voting season, thus basically setting them in stone. I,
personally only ever set mine as high as tentative and would recommend that
everyone do that at least with WIPs until you are ABSOLUTELY sure the story
won't be finished before Voting Season ends.

Leaward, you were here last year so you know exactly how WIPs that got
completed were handled. And people have asked that question this year and
were told the answer.

The only thing different next year will be that I'll remind everyone that
it's best to keep their WIP reviews at tentative.

So, just to be clear: if a story becomes complete during Reading Season or
Voting Season, we will change it to a completed category IF the following
occurs:

Post announcement to THIS group (just like Spring of Joy was) so that not
only the admins but all the reader/members can see it.

No, "it'll be completed next week" announcements either.

Now, the part that is up for debate is if we try to allow voters to rewriter
their reviews. I raised that question already. Some said yes. But did
anyone respond to my point? Is it fair to all the other votes for other
stories? Should anyone be able to go back and edit their previous reviews?
Should we, next year, not allow any votes to be set to Final until Voting
Season so this doesn't come up?

I will say that ASC does allow one to revise a vote. Simple revote. Your
first vote is then thrown out. The problem is that our website doesn't work
that way. As things stand, Final is a lock. If Admins can't change it, no
one can. Except maybe Anthony.

So we'll really need to get him in on this debate.

I think it would be reasonable to allow final votes to be changed
back to tenative in the few cases of a WIP being finished during
voting season. Because - the story has changed, you may want to
comment on the last chapters, if you love them or hate them - the
other voting is still going on, it's not as if voting were finished
completely.

I think it is a good idea not to finalize votes on WIPs, hindsight -
I didn't think of it before I hit that button.

EXCUSE ME? I was NOT here last year, I had only just discovered
fanfic last year and had not started writing it.I'd never heard of the
MEFA's until this spring -- you can tell that if you check the
membership dates. Please don't make statements like this, Ainae.

I asked the question this year on the Staff board and got no response.
Marta sent copied you on her private response to me and we got no
response. So I made another inquiry here. I tried.

Marta has already said she's checked both the rules and the FAQ's and
there's nothing on there about Incomplete stories. I'm re-copying and
pasting my original note and hers so there are no more mistakes and
accusations.

I've scanned the FAQs and rules at
http://home.earthlink.net/~ainae/mefa/ , and I can't find anything
that addresses this question.

My personal feeling is that things shouldn't be moved past the end of
reading season. This is why: Let's say I voted for "A Spring of Joy"
before it was completed. It's later finished, but I don't think the
last chapters are very good. So I don't think it deserves as many
points, so I go and shorten up my review. I can do this during reading
season, but during voting season I can't if the review has the status
"final".

That's my reasoning, anyway. ;-)

To recap: I don't think an incomplete story should be changed to
complete during voting season. What do you think, Ainae?

I understand being busy, believe me! If I didn't have all of my email

But it is sort of important to know when you aren't reading emails.
Since these are your awards I know I'm hesitant to step up. So if
you're not reading staff mail (or MEFAwards mail, or whatever) and we
know it, we could email you privately if we particularly need your
input. Just for future reference. :-)

Anyone who votes is a member of this list, but they don't necessarily
read the posts. This list can be really high-volume at times. (Hey, you
yourself said you're lucky to just check the MEFA posts and your
personal email.) Therefore I think you should use the special notice
feture when you say a certain story has been moved to a complete
status. That way people could sign up just to receive SN posts and not
have to receive all the emails.

Just my $.02, of course. I very rarely read WIPs, so I'm not really
affected by this.

Ainae-

They aren't in the current FAQs or rules.

Everyone else-

I am rewriting the FAQs. Sort of. I have the nominations handbook
half-written, still need to finish it, and lots other planned. I hope
to do all that this winter. At the moment I'm reading stories just like
everyone else. :-)

I've even talked to Anthony, and we'll be able to powst them at the
MEFA2005 site.

If you have ideas for questions you'd like addressed somewhere, email
me privately and I'll save the email and be sure I address it. I'll
even respond to your email, eventually.

(And Dreamflower, I saw that I have an email from you I never answered.
It's on the List of things I need to do. In addition to getting back to
that beta you offered. I really will get to that, I promise. RL has
just been majorly busy.)
