This author does such a great job of connecting Pippin's quest
adventures to his experiences later on as a father. It is also funny
that the once adventurous Pippin who drove his older cousins crazy
with his daring is now worried about his son's mischief. I loved
Faramir in this tale and the ending with Pippin's silent thanks to
Frodo for saving the Shire so that he son could enjoy it was perfect!

This author always finds an interesting way to look at things in her
tales. I loved her story of a frustrated young Pippin who hasn't
grown as tall as he would like and is mistaken for younger than he is
and his realization that even though he is rather small he can still
do some things very well and make his voice heard. Lovely!

This may have been the very first story that I read by this wonderful
author. I still go back and read it again from time to time. I love
Merry and Pippin's relationship in this story and the way that both
of them want to apologize to the other so desperately and are afraid
that they won't get the chance to do so. The ending is sweet and the
characters are so well written.

So much good to say about this one. I loved all of the characters in
this one but for obvious reasons Esmeralda Brandybuck is the stand-
out for me. The author's use of the Took fairie blood forming a bond
between Pippin and Esmeralda while Pippin is off on the quest is so
well done. I also like the worry and frustration of Esmeralda who can
only experience her son's situation through Pippin. The rest of the
Shire is included in this tale as well while they struggle on against
the evil that holds the Shire in its grip while Frodo, Merry, Pippin
and Sam are away. This is very creative and very well done. I was
sorry when it was finished.

A nice, reflective little piece. The last sentence seems to give the
whole of the fic, and feels very Faramir: "I give her the choice, lay
my heart in her hands. For at the end of all things, amid darkness

Éowyn, love me."

Good to see this one finished. It moves too quickly in places for my
taste, and feels a bit rushed, but the characters are well-defined,
and Diamond as the young spitfire works better than the blushing
Shire lass for this newly confident (and competent) Pippin.

I've got my problems with this one, well-rehearsed in forums. But,
nevertheless, the general set-up is one I can buy. I think my
favorite parts in this story were the fullfillment of one of
Adrahil's visions (I assume) and Boromir and Andrahar saying
farewell. The curse at the end gives me shivers.

The woes of the struggling versifier have seldom been so humorously
recorded. What really made the fic, though, are the notes at the end
to various possible readers. They do rather contradict each other in
parts—if it doesn't matter, why should he be sorry? But that is the
point, after all. Quite amusing!

Romance: Vignette · ID: 698
Reviewer: Dwimordene · 2005-08-21 09:29:26 Score: 6
This was really quite funny, and very well-written. Frodo as the
terror of the *daughters* of Buckland (or perhaps it's their fathers
who are terrorized by the thought of what their daughters are up to
with unknown debonair hobbits) is definitely not the gentlehobbit we
see in later years. Merry's part as the unwilling and just slightly
clueless messenger for ardent young women is well-played, as is
Bilbo's knowing complicity. Maybell stands up very well to scrutiny;
she knows what she wants and is willing to take some risks to get it,
and she's certainly no blushing virgin. Forthright and matter of
fact, with a certain wicked sense of humor, she strikes me as quite
the bold lass. One hopes she never hears about Lilac...

Title: Sand and Flame · Author: Tehta · Genres: Romance: Elves · ID:

Tehta comes though again with an amusing courtship, cast in the mold
of the Cinderella story, although with several key reversals. Melkor
standing in as a sort of deficient and vaguely malevolent fairy
godfather was quite amusing, as was Nerdanel's quest to find the man
who knows about sand and who made her a glass slipper at the ball.
This is a great blend of an old fairy tale with Tolkien, on the order
of Altariel's "Spirits of the House", except far more funny. Well
done!

A worthy successur to "Opening Doors"! The glimpses of Elven life, of
the rifts between the Noldor and the Quendi, all get filtered through
a Dwarf's eyes, a Dwarf who has eyes for the stone she must shape but
not, at first, for the partnership she must form with Galadriel. This
is a very unusual sort of romance, since in fact, the romance as such
has already occurred in the previous story. The unusual nature of
this courtship, which is forgotten as soon as dreams fade, only to be
rediscovered at an inopportune moment, makes it hard to track, but
still satisfying as politics and affection and temptation are worked
out in a strange city, which itself seems hardly formed and as new as
this alliance between Galadriel and Narvi. Beyond that, Rohirriel the
elf captain was a lovely original character who gave us a look at
what would later seem to be quintessential elven ways. The first-
person narrative is well-handled, and by the end, one has a glimpse
of the defiant hope that the Last Alliance would raise against the
Shadow of the East.

Well done, Adina ATL, and thank you for a wonderful story.

I don't read may non-hobbit fics, but I dearly love this one. I read
it ages ago and had to re-read it just now - it's that good.

This story gives Arwen a much deserved better ending than Tolkien
described. It always puzzled me how an immensely aged elf lady could
be so much less 'wise' than her relatively youthful husband? Surely
she knew what would happen when Aragorn died and considered the joy
of her love worth her impending sacrifice? Tolkien's description
makes her almost surprised! This is a much more satisfying and in
character for a woman than the original work. An insightful and much
needed end for the lady. Thank you for giving her peace.

Raksha the Demon fiendishly skewers her subject matter, leaving no
cliché unturned and no stereotype unhackneyed in this paean to bad-

Faramir; overly solicitous Boromir; blond and beatiful Legolas; randy
rangers; and an OFC who is the mother of all Mary Sues. There is even
a guest appearance by the mysterious but strangely attractive Figwit.

The thought that Merry and Pippin were two halves of one whole at
that time in their lives is so believable. The thoughts that the
other was safe was so often the only thing that kept each of them
going. I have no doubt that Merry would have followed shortly if
Pippin had died.

The depiction of Pippin's innocense and cheek, even to the powers

The scene at the end just made for a nice image of what eventual was

Take the little ones is an impressive story. Spaceweavil approaches
this story in such a magnificent manner: it is breathtaking. Every
word is carefully balanced; the narrative is truly stunning. The way
he author describes Ost-in-Edhil, the pride and the downfall… for me
it fits canon perfectly. As a reader, I feel like if I am truly
there, witnessing the events through the main character's eyes. The
grief of Erestor is so tangible and yet he manages to keep himself
under control. Until the moment one of the children asks for nana,
which was truly heartbreaking. In Tolkien canon, not much is known
about Erestor, but the way his history is written in such a short
piece is masterfully done.

This story is an incredible story that gives us more insight of
Erestor, I like the manner the author approached it, weaving in the
flaws of elvenkind and yet leaving hope for the future to come. Well
written, carefully constructed in story building, the pacing is
excellent and the way the author keeps the tension in the story: this
story is a great piece of work written by Spaceweavil.

Reviewer: Garnet Took · 2005-08-21 13:53:04 Score: 8
When I read this story, I was so relieved that I wasn't the only one
that thought something like this could happen. I always suspected
that if any of the four hobbits were to make this mistake, it would
be Pippin. He's so impulsive.

The bitter feeling of both young people at the time of the wedding
are quite believable. The fact that they only slowly come to like and
then even love each other is very realistic, too.

I cried when I figured out that Pippin was going to lose both his
young wife and little girl. The emotional roller-coaster was almost
too much, but life is like that sometimes. The alternate ending was
sweet, but we all knew it couldn't really be that way. Pippin had to
move on and build a new life with the person he was meant to be with.

I found it clever that the timing of this story is such that it could
have fit within canon, if people could accept that hobbits have
moments of moral weekness just like we do, without messing up any
established relationships or timelines.

Well done. Just thinking about this story can make me misty-eyed.

The author had me rolling on the floor laughing my guts out with this
story! She has this flair, this gift for writing my favorite hobbits
bantering back and forth to the point of exhaustion--on my part--from
too much laughter. Merry is so serious--and rightly so--about which
waistcoat to wear while proposing to Estella. Then he opens up this
huge walk-in closet full of neatly folded waistcoats of all colors
and designs. Frodo has absolutely no idea as how to proceed with
helping Merry decide with all the different types to choose from.
Pippin, who is amusing himself by pushing Merry's buttons during the
whole agonizing process. Merry ignores Pippin's choices while
entertaining Frodo's. It's all so hilarious! Finally, Pippin forces
his way in to offer Merry some sound advice regarding fashion
statements. Merry is so nervous that only after Frodo agrees with
their young cousin does Merry consider Pippin's choice as a good
one...or a fair one. Poor Merry! I loved this wee tale of Merry's
indecision.

The author has always captured me with her wild imagination, which
excels greatly at slapstick--and she's GOOD at it. Not many people
can get away with blending hobbits and that sort of comedic element.
I have enjoyed every single one of Grey Wonderer's tales--this is

This is a beautiful piece of writing. The two sections are written in
close parallel to show the contrast between the characters of Faramir
and his father.

Denethor has great respect for tradition so he brings the customary
garland of flowers as a funerary offering for his father. His actions
have the feel of ancestor worship, which is appropriate since
Denethor is highly suspicious of change and venerates the past.
Though he goes through these acts of filial love and duty, they are
empty motions since his thoughts dwell on the bitterness of the past.
His assertion that "We inherit our fathers' shadows" is ominous and
sad.

When Faramir visits Denethor's tomb, he puts aside tradition and,
instead of flowers, he brings the new heir to their house. His
thoughts and actions look to the future. I love how the birth of his
son gives him a new perspective on his own father; now he can
understand how Denethor had been driven mad by the loss of a child.

The piece is written in a spare and formal style that perfectly fits
the subject matter. Well done!

Dwim claims in her summary that this is "the existential Aragorn".
I'm not sure I necessarily agree with that statement. At least so far
as I understand existentialism, it means that we determine our
essential qualities, rather than having those essential qualities
determined by some other before we come into existence. Throughout
this story Aragorn struggles with his identity and which of his many
names capture the true essence of him -- but who he is seems to be
something of which he does not have control. Not to say this piece
doesn't have existential moments, like Aragorn's injunction to
Indirkan to "Turn your questions inward! Ask yourself: why did you
not slit my throat when you could easily have done so?" All in all,
it's a nice blend of philosophy, angst, and action, somehow universal
but also well-situated in Middle-earth.

from Sam's point of view, and I laughed, but the truth is, Larner got
there ahead of me. This is a masterpiece, one which not only tells
the story again, but adds layers and layers to it. Here is Sam,
choosing Frodo as his own master at the age of ten, observing Bilbo
and Frodo together through the years, and learning still more once
the quest has begun.

I love the details in this story, the things which weave through it
from beginning to end, like the little writing desk which Bilbo gave

Bag End. It is a tale touched with sorrow, but which still holds joy.

he "was almost used to Merry falling into silence, this new and

called back to life struck me, because it means that, at least to
some degree, Merry was dead. That seems a good way of describing the

this story was written before I suggested that challenge (and I

this seems to be a good embodiment of that challenge's spirit. Here
we have an "everyman", a bit like Beregond though his political

This is another one of those gapfillers that takes on a moment I
never imagined happening before I read the piece, but which I am glad
were written because they enrich Middle-earth so well. It makes sense
that Imrahil would be livid at the fact that Gandalf didn't share his
knowledge of what was happening in the hallows. Of course Imrahil
being Imrahil would be pretty restrained about his feelings and not
let them rule him.

That's the other thing that I like so much about this piece: the
choice of point-of-view. I think anything other than first would have
been too distanced for the emotional impact this story relies on, and
the choice of Imrahil as narrator was perfect. He's not an impetuous
youth, which I think would have taken the story too close to
maudlin.Yet he was just close enough to the people involved that it
really tugged on the strings of your heart. Well done, Liz.

almost painful. But the end is lovely and soothing.

A neat bit of storytelling, this. It makes me ache just reading it,
and catches the dilemma of whether to trust or not trust Smeagol very
well indeed.

*snicker* When Aragorn decides to take on the fanfic writers over
certain... inaccuracies... and ends up with a small entourage at a
convention, delight ensues -- at least for the readers of this
ficlet! I think my favorite part must be Pippin preparing to defend
Legolas from the ladies...

Omg, help! *falls off chair howling*

I loved this the first time I read it, although you hadn't dealt with
Gandalf then, and I love it now all the more. I thought I'd break
something when I read that last line and considered the implications!

*takes a deep puff on her asthma inhaler* This is still one of the
most brilliant, hilarious, bang-on-target vignettes about the travels
of the Fellowship that has ever hit the internet and I hope you get
lots of points for it!

"No, sir," Sam replied, shaking his head. "Sometimes they're even
worse."

This story is a delight! I love Frodo's description of his cousins,
and Sam's brave attempts to keep out of the discussion at all. And
the explanations at the end as the cousins clear the air are just
right.

An excellent example of what a drabble series can do. This tale is
told in short swift breaths, some of them painful and some of them
sighs of relief. A beautiful look at the time that Merry spent when
he was the only hobbit standing at Cormallen. (And a nice bit of
hurt/comfort for Pippin as well!)

Absolutely perfect! This story has everything I ever want to read in
a fanfic. It is emotional without going overboard, honest without
being soppy and to top it all off it is also downright hilarious in
places. I think if ever someone were to nominate a best fanfiction
paragraph it would have to be the one describing the 'fights' between
Celeborn and Galadriel. I really do love reading Bodkin's work and,
although I may not often say so, I think she's brilliant.

Title: Life in the Angle · Author: Leaward · Genres: Romance:
Incomplete · ID: 181
Reviewer: Minuialeth · 2005-08-22 10:11:02 Score: 10
When I first started reading this story, I was amazed at how much
Leaward could channel in her feelings to the reader and yet
intricately describe everything around her hero Tarkil. Soon enough
it became clear that it was not just the opening scene, but an entire
story that borders on being an original fic. The emotions are not
only shining brightly across each page and paragraph, they are clear,
penetrating and diverse. Ranging from moments of witty humour to
thrilling, breath stopping suspense, the events flowed in a light
rhythm that left the reader wanting more. Though the ambience is not
heavily stressed, one feels that it comes quite naturally. The words
simply stimulate the imagination and you find yourself smiling at
Haldon's antics, sympathising with Poppi and cheering Tarkil on.
This, I believe, gave the story a human feel, rarely found in fanfic,
particularly ones that deal with such ambiguous characters as the
rangers, not to mention their everyday lives and worries. The
vividness of every character breathes life into the story so much
that the readers' interaction only becomes natural. Even though the
style is simple, the ideas are not.
Some of the ideas, Leaward tackled not only hit home with every
reader, they are at the very heart of human life. "Tired of being
patient" Yes, it seems like we keep willing ourselves to be patient
and endure but we always lose control at some point. We all have a
boss figure in our lives, who drives us up the wall but we can make
up excuses for him when we are in our finer mood. The plot is quite
original. Yet, it weaves itself intimately into Tolkien's bigger one…
In short, a brilliant work in its complex simplicity! If this just
the beginning of the series, I'ld definitely love to see what comes
next.

Oh dear! I exaggerate not. You had me in tears. I have felt, as frodo
felt, empty, must stay empty, must keep that wall in place or all
will crumble. and Oh, the inanities of what people say when they are
trying to comfort those who have lost more than their heart can
handle loosing. You captured bilbo's thoughts SO well to me. That
spark of life that drew Frodo to him above all Bagginses, put out
like a quenched candle. How wonderful that it was bilbo himself to
help spark that light. That wall will keep trying to raise itself,
but Frodo has Bilbo so that is good.

I loved that it was from Bilbo's pov. I love how B handled the
situation. And Oh! A foreshadowing of Frodo "saving" B from the ring?
when he puts his small hand into the one which wanted to reach for
the ring!

Fabulous fabulous. I do LOVE a story that makes me cry!

Fantastic. Utterly wonderful. Not the feeling of Tolkien, but that is
all for the better. You still managed to capture the personalities of
your cast. Not a moment of the story went by when I didn't at least
have a smile on my face. Much of the time I was litteraly laughing
out loud. What a refreshing story. How wonderful of you to realize,
that yes, frodo went through some tough times; later leading to his
leaving middle earth, but even those in the midst of such times can
appreciate good food and good times. (i speak somewhat from
experience) I know quoting is frowned upon for this voting process,
and anyway, I would end up quoting a great deal of the story back to
you. And well, having written it, I'm sure you've already read it.
Just know that i found it to be utterly perfect. Especially the scene
with gandalf and frodo at the end. I do hope you have another story
out there where the wizard takes part in the fun? I look forward to
reading more of your works. Great job!! congrats!

That was FANTASTIC. I almost didn't read it, wary to read another
badly done frodo story. But this was NOT one of those. The insites
into Frodo's feelings about his part in the quest and the state of
the world were perfectly done. Not overly stated, nor under. Almost
poetic. Quite beautiful really! I'm gushing I know.

"That burden. . " This part so clearly spoke of his feelings of
failure. He succumbed to the ring's call and was not truly the one
who threw it in. We know of course that this fact does not lessen his
accomplishment. Your Eowyn knows this as well, when she speaks of it
holding so many in its thrall.

The fact that you made this encounter the only Eowyn and Frodo have
just adds to the perfection of it. Makes it all the more beautiful
and precious, if i may use that word (wink). I love the way she
hordes the memory to herself, afraid to cheapen it by the retelling.

A paragraph that truly made my jaw drop with it's fantastic poetry is
the one that includes "Look long and well, he seems to say to her, "
So sad and wonderful. How many in the excitement of of the winning of
the war saw the cost of that win so truly as your frodo has. The
elves I"m sure, but what of Men? Do they know that with the worst,
they have also lost the best?

I just can't seem to gush enough over this wonderful piece. You were
SO right to nominate yourself for it. It deserves it's chance in the
sun.
Oh and WOW, the "receding" imagry at the very end! Perfect! I will be
recommending this story to others and I look forward to reading more
