Maglor into a hauntingly beautiful tale. From her allegorical use of
nightingale and falcon, to the heart-rending climax of Maglor's rendition of
the Noldolante, one feels to the bones the guilt and shame, remorse and
regret of these two tragic figures. How fitting she chooses to give them
comfort and hope in the end. Lovely, Eni, thank you for sharing!

Pippin’s pickled-egg breath makes a rather, ah, memorable opening for this
wise little story. Budgie adeptly mixes humor and angst, book- and
movie-verse to remind us that while the hobbits have been marked by their
experiences, those marks are as much a reminder of their survival and
triumph as of what they have lost.

to thoroughly delight while Ernest's never-ending fish story most definitely
does not. (In my opinion, at least). What a hilarious combination Isabeau
gives us in the glorious adventures of Legolas and Gimli sailing to Valinor
in a fast leaking craft. I love Legolas' innocence and Gimli's gruff humour
and the playful banter that passes between them, not too mention the
implement that becomes the catalyst for further commotion once the pair
arrive in Aman.
From his one word reply to the haughty Noldor to his riotous remark to the
Lady Galadriel, Gimli has me splitting my sides with laughter and fighting
for breath. Throw in Orvelos and Wilburae, with their wacky ideas and
dwarfish-like enthusiasm and Legolas' brood enacting the killing of
Thingol-Greycloak and fall of Gondolin - utterly priceless! In fact, my only
complaint is the story is not finished. Definitely one to bookmark in hopes
of an update!

A wonderfully creepy story that called up my own disturbing memories, from a
macabre curio shop in Seattle to Tod Browning’s "Freaks" (needing only for
the orcs to start chanting "One of us" as they close in on Merry to complete
the picture). The juxtaposition of two different moments in Merry’s life,
and the bizarre connection between them, was masterfully done.

A wonderfully angsty Cormallen fic! I love how Pippin tells Merry that he
looks like a mess (a lighthearted teasing moment) and then switches to
seriousness as he recognizes that Merry is still under the Shadow. Very
perceptive of Pip, and very sweet how they both need each other.

to do with his books -- and what he eventually chooses to do with them. The
drabble conveys the notion that he hesitated for a long time over what to do
-- perhaps that’s why it took him six months to leave the Shire! -- and that
he took a great deal of care in choosing whom to give each book to. And
running underneath all that is the undercurrent that Frodo already believes
he will not return. Well done!

incompetent bureaucracy, partly because I’ve worked for a few companies that
would make toiling in Barad-Dur seem preferable, and partly because I think
the “banality of evil” is far more troubling than out-and-out psychosis. In
this piece, Thundera Tiger delivers wonderfully on the premise. It’s
well-paced in gradually building through the explanation of the various
disasters that have befallen the Dark Tower, while the protagonists are
extremely effectively characterised. And although it couldn’t be described
as classically Tolkienesque in execution, it has a Tolkienesque spirit, in
that evil contains the seeds of its own undoing. Excellent work.

Well! Let me actually write my review for this in the proper place.
Sam's discomfort here is very believable. He's too humble to realize that
people would want to honor him along with the other hobbits.Of course he
finally wears the fine clothes to honor his friends both old and new, and
not to honor himself, which I think is very Sam-like. I love how he
rationalizes that Frodo, Merry and Pippin are all too "cracked" not to think
that he's trying to rise above his station, it's the sort of matter of
propriety that he would think of and that would not cross their minds.

experience: birth and rejoicing, death and mourning, how we go on with the
world when those we love are gone. Sam’s simple question about whether he
could bear to hear Frodo’s name “dozens of times each day” is a powerful
expression of how grief can take us. By his choice, Elana shows us clearly
that Sam has indeed chosen to be whole and at peace, at least for a while.
Thank you for sharing this lovely drabble with us.

story for me. Merry does think much too much sometimes, and much too hard.
His pain is a palpable thing here. He deserves happiness, but he fears to
reach for it, though it is within his grasp if he will just open his eyes.
But he thinks that he is undeserving, and has always thought it better not
to speak. It is better in his mind not to speak or act, and remain Pippin’s
friend and cousin rather than risk losing what he has.
I am rooting for him every time I read this story, that Merry will go into
Pippin’s room, that this time he will take the risk, that he will *finally*
get his heart’s desire. He has put other persons and tasks ahead of his own
heart and needs for so long. And such is the talent that Nickey brings to
this story, I am afraid every time I read this that he will once more sadly
pass by Pippin’s door, or that he will not stay with him if he does enter,
or that he will not take the final risk and reach for what he wants so
desperately. And then I am afraid that Pippin might not respond the way that
Merry wants and needs him to. But Merry does take the risks this time, and
Pippin responds beyond all of Merry’s hope, and I am so happy for them both.
I love the dreamlike naturalness of Pippin's response, as if this is just to
be expected, and about time too. Pippin is a lot wiser than some folks give
him credit for.
And the next time I read it I will be pulled in again, and go through the
same anguish on Merry’s behalf, and feel the same joy at their fulfillment
that I always do. That is the mark of an outstanding author and story.

largely with minor characters or original characters that does nothing to
lessen my enjoyment of the story. I never cared really for Fredegar but
Dreamflower has made me see him with new eyes. Bergil was interesting to me,
so far as he interacted with Pippin in Minas Tirith, but Dreamflower has
brought him to life for me. It is the same with all of her characters
whether or not you love them or you dislike them – they all come to life for
you in this story, and indeed in all of this author’s stories.
This tale fits in quite well in Dreamflower’s universe. There are many
moments and developments that I love so far as the story has gone –
Berilac’s growing love for the healer’s assistant. The Buckland hobbits
teaching the others to swim – except for the lasses, as it wouldn’t be
proper. Being the oldest male present Legolas is recruited for that task! I
am so worried about Bergil recovering from his near drowning, and overjoyed
that Freddy is recovering from the loss of Folco. I am wondering what scheme
the hobbit prisoners have up their sleeves having to do with tattoos. I
wonder what the heck Eomer is going to do with the prisoners. I am really
looking forward to the Embassy arriving in Minas Tirith and getting to know
the place, seeing first hand where some of the events the Travellers have
spoken of took place. As you can see it is a very exciting story, full of
excellent characterisations, dialogue, plot, and descriptions. It’s a really
*good* story, and I highly recommend it!

cares for him by building up the fire, holding him, letting him feel her
presence while he is caught in the grasp of his nightmare, and clearly she
does this every time it is needed. The sense of building horror as the black

This story (sequel of "Beyond the Havens") does IMO for fanfiction what C.S.
Lewis once did for children's literature. Sam and Frodo have died in the
Blessed Realm, and now we have the rare chance to explore where they go
afterwards... to a place of neverending peace and stunning glory, where all
pain and suffering is gone and all those who have lost each other may be
reunited. And the "son" who helped Frodo to overcome his dark memories in
Tol Eressëa is here, visible in his full glory, King of Eternity and Lord of
the Dance...
I must confess I'm never able to read this tale without laughing and crying
at the same time; Tolkien's wondrous universe and the biblical idea of
heaven are blended in such a effortless and loving way that "Long Home for
Mortals" always stays with me, warming my heart and filling me with a
silent, lasting joy. And the argument that christianity has no place in
Tolkien fanfiction is ridiculous; this is shingingly beautiful, and it rings
absolutely true.

has begun to write some sequels set here in her *Stars* universe!
I love stories where Gandalf spends some time with young Pippin, and in this
case he has shown up at exactly the right moment, as Pippin is visiting
Frodo at Bag End and is rather ill. Frodo is exhausted and so Gandalf offers
to sit with the sick lad while he gets some rest.
His care of Pippin is lovely and I love the images – taking Pippin in his
lap to ease his coughing, letting him use his very large handkerchief, but
best of all is their dialogue. I love this line of Gandalf’s: “I am not
accustomed to a quiet Took,” Gandalf said finally, “and I hope I never come
across another.” Pippin might not be a chatty and cheerful Took at the
moment, but he is still a curious one as he proves when he asks Gandalf
about stars, figuring that Gandalf knows all about them. I love that Gandalf
indulges him in this, not only chatting about stars, but actually wizarding
up a pair of them so that Pippin can see them close up. It is so fitting
that it is a pair, because Pippin has just declared that he reckoned a star
would be lonely if it were on its own, and that he himself would be very
lonesome were he the only hobbit in a place. Gandalf hopes that never
happens to Pippin, but we the readers know that it does, and it makes for a
nice bit of foreshadowing.
The description of the stars is well thought out, their warmth, and energy,
and the way that they light up the entire room, and I love that forever
after these are Pippin’s very own stars that watch over him. The image of
Gandalf holding blanket-wrapped Pippin in his arms by the open window, as
Pippin thanks the stars for visiting and sends them on their way is one that
I wish that I could draw and have to look at whenever I wanted, but even
though I couldn’t possibly do the scene justice thanks to the author's
talent it is there perfectly in my head.
It’s lovely the next morning when Frodo thinks that Pippin hallucinated the
whole thing, only to find out that Sam had seen the stars as they made their
way home!
Can you tell how much I like this story, lol?

In this tale Frodo makes up his decision to leave... or better it is already
made, and what we are allowed to read are his reflections over that
decision. Here is not the violent rage that can be found in the tales of
Aratlithiel, the dramatical impact of the stories written by willow wode,
but a silent power, a pain, gilded and transformed by wisdom and a deep,
gently love. This makes Frodo's thoughts in "Midnight at Bag End" so very
believable and utterly book-verse. jodancingtree has always written a "true"
and convincing Frodo, and this is one of her best examples.

This is truly astonishing; a lost elf, separated from his kind and
desperate, finds himself in ancient Israel, saved from being stoned by a
completely unexpected being, and to his awe and surprise he sees the light
of Iluvatar again.
To be honest, I'd never thought that this Bible/ Silmarillion-crossover
would work. But it does, and more... it is deeply moving and beautiful, with
a deep strength and without any "false" tone - and it could have been
rediculous and even terrible had the author not beem so skilled with the
words and images she uses to create this small miracle. BRAVO!

but still well spoken and articulate. He does not sound overly childish as
some fanfic writers tend to make him, and that really adds to my enjoyment
of this story. His thoughts here as he agonises over his actions and being
wrenched away from his Merry are spot on. I loved this thought about his
being separated from Merry: “I am overwhelmed with the enormity of the loss
of my cousin, the rock I have leaned upon all of my life, my sustenance, my
water, the air that I breathe. And now he is gone. I am alone.” Wow. This
could not be articulated any better in my opinion. Gandalf’s gentle care of
Pippin is wonderful, and he does not treat him like a child in the least.
Their conversation is perfect, the content sounding as if Tolkien himself
might have written it, and their comfortable relationship so easy to see. I
truly believe that Pippin has known Gandalf all of his young life, and loves
and trusts him without question as he would a grandsire, and that is how
their relationship is written here. Gandalf’s assurance to Pippin that he
still loves him even though Pippin sometimes vexes him is a perfect example
of this.
This is a wonderful piece, written in Tolkien’s style, and I like it very
much. I can’t recall if the author has written the sequel she mentioned at
one time, but I would dearly like to read it!

Pippin after the incident with the Palantir. But this lovely scene between
Merry and Legolas reassures me that Merry is not quite alone yet, and even
when the others leave him for the Paths of the Dead the Fellowship will be
separated only by distance, for they have forged friendships stronger than
even death can break.
Legolas’s explanation of what actually happened to Pippin when he looked
into the Palantir and fought off the Dark Lord is told in a very descriptive
way, and I love the way the truth finally dawns on Merry, and the
realisation of just how brave and strong his Pippin is. I could really feel
Merry’s pride in his little cousin. Not only do Legolas’s words reassure
Merry about Pippin, they also make him see that he is himself stronger and
more necessary and vital to the Quest and to Frodo than he had before
realised.
Legolas’s words also give the reader a very clear insight as to just what it
was that Pippin accomplished, the enormity of what he did. It is an
impressive glimpse of Pippin’s spirit and strength. Pippin had Sauron, the
Dark Lord himself, inside his head, trying to rip Pippin’s knowledge from
him, and he resisted, revealing nothing that would imperil Frodo or the
Quest. That is so amazing!
The way that Merry and Legolas sit companionably and comfortably together
going through Legolas’s arrows while they talk adds to the realism of this
story, and gives it a very natural feel. Well done!

It is a rare thing to come across a fic that pairs humans and elves and find
is believable enough to continue reading through. The Quest however did more
than just grip me till I finished every single chapter, it dissolved all
distinction I had between elf and human till all I could see was pure and
blinding emotions. What is greater is that it is not by forcing the reader
to endure dramatic exclamations or unnatural events. No it was a gentle sway
of everyday events through the eyes of Rian; thus, retaining not only its
warmth and credibility but also a multitude of thoughts and feelings that we
could identify and feel strongly with. It does have the fairytale feel to it
but that is only another evidence of the writer’s ingenuity. The Quest not
only feels akin to Gothic love novels such as those of Bronte but inspires a
reader without the aftermath of angst and depression, No, just calm
thoughtfulness and the feeling that somehow you had really witnessed what
happened. Rian, I must add is a delightful OFC that comes off as both
innocent yet strong, maturing as her journey proceeds. Speaking of the
journey, I would love to read more… now Rian feels like a friend of mine
whom I must make sure she is happy and has fulfilled her destiny. Great work
!

especially as they are so well done.
She focuses mainly on the Original Characters, starting with my favourite
Uruk, Smagnu. She sums up very well the change that has come over him since
meeting the strange little halflings and that now he has learned that if he
cares about those in his command they will serve him willingly. He has also
discovered the slightly more unpleasant side of having friends, caring what
happens to them.
The second drabble is about Saruman and we find him baffled and angry that
the two hobbits he had captured and damaged had won through in spite of his
best endeavours. More annoyingly, one of them appears to be the Ringbearer
after all.
The third follows poor Dysgwr, the healer, who could never cope with a horse
and yet he must if he is to make a difference.
The fourth and final drabble shows the strange little orcs, Sniggin and
Bloggin, practising with their new weapons. Sniggin is learning to shoot a
bow and Bloggin is put through his paces by Grutfley as he becomes skilled
at wielding his knife, hopefully gaining enough expertise before the battle
not to become a casualty.
These are all succinct and to the point, nothing fancy or flowery, which
reflects the style of Recaptured itself well. It is particularly interesting
for me to see someone else's take on my own characters.

Nerdanel’s Religion in Middle Earth is a thoroughly researched and
well-written essay. In clear words and with plenty references, she explains
to her reader the significance of religion, organised or not in Tolkien’s
world. For me, this article has proven its usefulness and saves me a lot of
time researching for references.
For me, in my humble opinion, it is clear that there is not any organized
religion as we see it today: with churches, temples, hierarchy, or any
written words. Nerdanel looks at every race that walks on Arda and
summarizes how and why they practised religion in their own and unique way.
What is used instead is the oral tradition and Tolkien's words "was not a
Christian world" makes it more clearly to me why he disliked allegory. When
I read this essay, I think that what Tolkien wanted to say that might come
in the future of Arda. Especially when Nerdanel gives us the reference to a
story that takes place in the Fourth Age. But I am surprised that Tolkien
wanted to write about a satanic cult. Maybe he wanted to oppose it with
Christianity, but I am not sure since he abandoned the story. Nerdanel gives
us insight on how Tolkien considered religion by creating a whole pantheon
of gods and the good people that don't need a god to follow the greater
theme. A very thought provoking and bunny creating essay Nerdanel. I am very
glad you put all the references together and organised it for us. Great
work!

What a sweet and tender story Dreamflower! All the Lassie cliché’s are in
there, for example that Lassie almost always finds someone in the well, but
it was so pleasant to read that the Valar granted Frodo a break from
carrying the Ring. The explanation why Frodo doesn't dream about his parents
was very moving. Just the thought that Frodo did get a dream that gave him
some solace was very rewarding to read.

So, I was delighted at his rescue by Sam and glad to see him recooperate
from his hurts in Rivendell.
Jillian elaborates on Tolkien, giving Bill voice, in this sweet tale of the
Tenth Walker, the "representative of the free animals of Middle-earth".
There is humour in his mistrust of Asfaloth and disdain for the elven
horses. Ther is angst, when he is left at the doors of Moria but the valiant
pony contributes in his own way to keep the fellowship alive. A lovely short
story about one whose name is often forgot.

There is so much warmth and tenderness in this story. SlightlyTookish writes
a touching story where Pippin has a serious cold and his friends take good
care of him. The story is written before the War of the Ring and I feel a
bit sad when Frodo thinks about Bilbo not living anymore at Bag End.
SlightlyTookish gives us strong and well-written characters. Poor Pip tries
to remain strong valiantly (his cough is very nasty, SlightlyTookish
envisions that very well), Frodo who keeps on nursing Pippin until he can’t
stay awake any longer. And Gandalf with his special love for hobbits. This
love specific stands out in this short story. Gandalf does know his hobbits
very well and he really doesn’t like to see Pippin this ill or Frodo very
tired. In his own and unique fatherly manner Gandalf makes Pippin feel
better by creating stars. I found that moment very beautifully written. For
a moment, I held my breath when Pippin talked to Frodo the next morning, but
the way in which SlightlyTookish completed it made me finishing this story
with a good and fuzzy feeling. A great story SlightlyTookish!

Concerning ladders is such a delightful story. It has so much that makes you
either feel a bit sad, or have to chuckle, or are being kept on the edge of
your seat really wanting to read what will happen next. It is just so sad to
read that after everything Merry and Pippin has gone through together, Merry
jumps to the conclusion that Pippin must have stolen the ladder. Although he
comes with good arguments of the why, but later on when he questions himself
where I feel a bit for Merry and are wondering how he’s going to solve this.
Poor Pippin, I feel so incredibly for him and this is something I like about
this story. With clear prose, Grey Wonderer gets to the core of emotions so
clearly; it feels like the character in question relates his story to you
directly.
Then there is the bickering between the Grubs. For a moment, when they stood
on the doorstep of Merry’s home, I thought something else was going on. The
dialogue that Grey Wonderer writes, illustrates that not every marriage in
the Shire is that happy. This gives her story Concerning Ladders a very
realistic feel and Merry’s response on it gives the reader a feel how he
will be a great Master of Buckland. But how to wrap a ladder? I guess that
would take loads of paper and loads of ropes or ribbons. At any rate, a
great story Grey Wonderer. I enjoyed it a lot!

Barrow-wight trapping the hobbits is very well thought out, and I liked the
manipulation of the fog that teased and helped entrap them. The way that the
wight captured Pippin, Merry, and Sam put me in mind of Shelob without the
sting, drugging its victims, pulling them inside its lair and then sinking
back to wait.
I liked the wight deciding that Frodo would be saved for the Witch-king, and
that Merry, Pippin, and Sam warranted the longer ritual for nobility. The
giving to Merry of the ancient knowledge to fill in the gaps of what he knew
before he met his doom was nicely done, and explains Merry’s words after
their rescue. I also liked its feelings about Pippin’s youth. This gave a
matter-of-factness to the whole proceeding, as though the wight was just
doing what it was meant to do, and held no special animosity against these
halflings - it is just plain evil and this is what it does. I did find it
odd in this section that as this was written from the wight’s pov that it
seemed to think of the hobbits by name.
The bit about the blades being protected there, some enspelled against the
Witch-king, was inspired, and so was the explanation about the blade Frodo
used against the wight. It is fascinating to picture the wight’s arms being
the only solid parts of it! I really liked that Frodo knew that Merry needed
to be taken out first, and that you reasoned that out from his name being
mentioned first in the book. The way the nightmare lingers once outside is
very good, and it was very much in Merry's personality that he gets a grip
in order to divert Pippin’s attention away from the barrow. I felt that the
main reason Tom didn’t want Pippin to see the shredded clothes was so that
he would not be terrified by what must have happened and I liked that
protectiveness in both of them.
I liked that the hobbits had no interest in the riches removed from the
barrow. Many hobbits may have, but not these four. The vision they had of
the Rangers and their recognition of Strider at the banquet was great!
A really enjoyable story, thank you!

This is a very very intriguing story. Kielle picks out an interesting
character from Tolkien’s world and extrapolates on that with this what if
story, give her two canon facts and Kielle weaves an incredibly story around
it. Beruthiel is strongly written and has an analytic view on events and
persons around her. I loved the manner how she wrote the family reunion and
I can imagine that Eärnil feels a bit uneasy when Beruthiel talks with her.
What made me smile was how Beruthiel talks to her cats is a nice referral to
what is said about her. Some legends might indeed be true or not. Beruthiel
final thoughts regarding the line of Kings in this vignette is chilling:
“Memories fade, and books burn. Blood, however...blood remains.” It is
amazing how true that was later on when Aragorn reclaims the throne of
Arnor. This is another great vignette written by Kielle, which I loved a
lot.

Pippin’s pickled-egg breath makes a rather, ah, memorable opening for this
wise little story. Budgie adeptly mixes humor and angst, book- and
movie-verse to remind us that while the hobbits have been marked by their
experiences, those marks are as much a reminder of their survival and

From his one word reply to the haughty Noldor to his riotous remark to the
Lady Galadriel, Gimli has me splitting my sides with laughter and fighting
for breath. Throw in Orvelos and Wilburae, with their wacky ideas and
dwarfish-like enthusiasm and Legolas' brood enacting the killing of

complaint is the story is not finished. Definitely one to bookmark in hopes

A wonderfully creepy story that called up my own disturbing memories, from a
macabre curio shop in Seattle to Tod Browning’s "Freaks" (needing only for

the picture). The juxtaposition of two different moments in Merry’s life,
and the bizarre connection between them, was masterfully done.

surviving parents of the consequences of Aragorn and Arwen’s love expressed
so clearly and eloquently in so few words. This is a beautiful drabble that
speaks of the many years Elrond and Gilraen have know each other, and
presents Gilraen as the strong, clear-sighted woman she must have been. The
phrasing is gorgeous. Well done!

incompetent bureaucracy, partly because I’ve worked for a few companies that
would make toiling in Barad-Dur seem preferable, and partly because I think
the “banality of evil” is far more troubling than out-and-out psychosis. In
this piece, Thundera Tiger delivers wonderfully on the premise. It’s
well-paced in gradually building through the explanation of the various
disasters that have befallen the Dark Tower, while the protagonists are
extremely effectively characterised.

I love how he
rationalizes that Frodo, Merry and Pippin are all too "cracked" not to think
that he's trying to rise above his station, it's the sort of matter of
propriety that he would think of and that would not cross their minds.

expression of how grief can take us. By his choice, Elana shows us clearly

> · 2005-10-01 06:39:38I was so pleased when Nickey wrote this and it continues to be a favourite
story for me.

I did enjoy the meeting between Eomer and Faramir. Poor Eomer - caught
between the White Lady and the object of her affections. This promises well
for their future relationship - even if there is plenty of below-the-surface
challenge going on. I loved the shade of Boromir bristling protectively in
the corner - and the poor put-upon chamberlain, trying to do twenty things
at once. Good storyl

> · 2005-10-01 08:12:13This is one of my favourite stories and I am so glad that Slightly Tookish
has begun to write some sequels set here in her *Stars* universe!

BRAVO!

> · 2005-10-01 08:52:31Pippin’s voice in this story sounds very much as Tolkien wrote him, young,
but still well spoken and articulate.

Great work

especially as they are so well done.

Great
work!

A great story SlightlyTookish!

on stage, singing at the top of his lungs, and the elven galadhrim echoing
the chorus! Very well done!

> · 2005-10-01 13:14:09I can’t believe that I have missed this terrific story! The reasons for the
Barrow-wight trapping the hobbits is very well thought out, and I liked the
manipulation of the fog that teased and helped entrap them.

Blood, however...blood remains.” It is
amazing how true that was later on when Aragorn reclaims the throne of
Arnor. This is another great vignette written by Kielle, which I loved a
lot.
