This is a lovely glimpse of two hobbit lads having fun. I loved their
adventure against the goblin king and that Merry used to play the same game
with Frodo. Both young hobbits were in perfect character! Well done!

This has got to be one of the dearest and sweetest "Boromir lives" AU I have
ever seen. The majority of them tend to be dark and filled with angst. This
one is filled with light and love. The author has such an insight into the
relationship of the younger hobbits to Boromir, and the Boromir she depicts
is free of the pride and despair that left him prey to the Ring. I also love
her meandering style, very old-fashioned and lyrical. This is a wonderful
story!

I have not gone very far with this one, but I have to say it is filled with
things I'd never thought much about: Faramir needing to learn Rohirric, the
hobbits' relationship to Eowyn (there are some extremely funny bits where
some people think Merry and Pippin are children and she their mother). I'm
going to *have* to finish reading this sometime...

In the "Quarantined" universe, Aragorn makes the acquaintance of Frodo while
he is still young and living as Bilbo's heir at Bag-End. The whole idea is
delightful, as the Ranger and the young tween forge a deep and lasting
friendship. It's a very sweet, happy and fluffly AU, with just a tiny
leavening of h/c and youthful angst. Delightful story!

Another exciting tale by Budgie! Aragorn's fear at the beginning is so well
done, not knowing what he will find. I love the image of the hobbits helping
each other cross the Ford. The sense of panic when they are going to be
separated from Frodo is really good, and I like Pippin's attack on Strider.
Merry taking charge of the other two hobbits - and Aragorn in a way - is so
in his character! I liked how Sam and Pippin snapped to and did what he told
them to.

This is a brilliant hurt/comfort fic with a touch of action adventure thrown
in. I love the relationships and interactions of the hobbits in this story.
I also love their interactions with Aragorn and Gandalf. The medical/healing
bits of this are very well done, and just realistic enough, and the way the
Budgie builds up the suspense, over and over, is something that she is a
master at.

I think my favourite part of this story is the scene where the Dark Lord
almost tracks down the Ring. The wind, the ensorceled drape and Gandalf's
staff are wonderful here, as is Merry and Pippin's bravery in saving
Aragorn's life and Bilbo's pride in them, and Aragorn's gratitude is so well
written.

Merry helping Elrond during the surgery is good as well, and there are all
sorts of wonderful moments, like Pippin crawling into Gandalf's lap, meeting
Bilbo, their reaction to Arwen...

A thoroughly exciting and spellbinding tale!

The profoundness of Legolas' thoughts and observations is truly amazing,
Karenator. I felt like I was experiencing a transcendant spiritual moment
right along with him.

The language in this story is so moving, so lyrical, so poetic, so
evocative. I could almost feel the strong emotions raging through Legolas as
he marvelled at this terrifying and wonderful new feeling.

I love the touch with the Great Horned Owl. How like Legolas to speak with
it, and to think about it with such respect! I also like Legolas' anchoring
at the end by his friendship with Gimli.

Entire new vistas are being opened to him, to his wonder and sorrow and joy
and regret. I, too, now have an understanding of what the sea-longing must
have been like, an understanding that had eluded me from Tolkien's lack of
writing on the subject.

Very beautifully written, Karenator! Thank you for sharing it with us!

I'm not normally a big fan of angst, but "Lost" kept me on the edge of my
seat over many months, as First Mate posted chapter after chapter of good
news, bad news -- and cliffhangers.

Her Middle-earth is a rather awful place, with baddies like Lord Hebert
buying slaves and treating them like dirt -- all for the sake of good
capitalism, of course. Unfortunately, Elrohir is one of those slaves.

The adventures of Aragorn, trying to get a drugged and uncooperative brother
home are excruciating. But, the really sad thing is, even after they get him
home, he cannot heal from the horrible experiences he went through when
caught by slave-traders.

Then it gets even worse, because we learn that enemies abound even in the
supposed safety of Rivendell. And even after Elrohir gets better, Elladan is
still in need of healing.

What is fascinating is how well First Mate captures all the usually-sudden
changes in Elrohir's mind as he shakes off the long-lasting effects of the
powerful behavior-altering drugs that had been used by the slaveowners to
keep him docile. We see his POV as well as Aragorn's, and confusion reigns
on both sides. This is truly a riveting story. Well done!

What a chilling companion this story makes to Thundera Tiger's other, very
different, story of Barad-dûr, "A Very Dark..." etc.

I'll never think of this song in the same way again. And I wonder whether
there was, perhaps, more answer in it than either the elf or his
interrogators realized...in its silly, joyful way, a sign of the power of
Imladris that the Dark Lord could never understand.

In this story, Legolas at last begins to serve in the Southern Patrol, under
the command of his brother Eilian. He is a capable warrior; however, that
patrol operates near Dol Guldur, and the evil that seeps from there
permeates the warriors' environment and their spirits, and must be
constantly guarded against. At this time, the harshness of the environment
is multiplied because of the Long Winter.

Legolas gets to learn a lot about his brother's younger days... but what we
do not expect is that Eilian is very seriously injured in battle during a
blizzard, and they are separated from the rest of the warriors. Legolas has
the responsibility and opportunity to save his brother's life under dire
circumstances. And to keep his brother awake, he has him tell stories of his
childhood... Good thinking, on the part of both Legolas and Daw!

And we also get the earliest glimpse of Maltanaur, trying to keep up with
Eilian discreetly, but not entirely successfully.

The family that Daw has created for Legolas and Thranduil have always been
fascinating to me. They are unique characters and well-drawn. In this story,
we see a lot of interaction between Legolas and Eilian, where they are both
experienced warriors. Eilian is placed in the unaccustomed position of
having to allow Legolas to care for him, instead of caring for Legolas, and
he realizes that his little brother is mature and capable. And Legolas gets
to learn a lot about his brother as he was when he was young and naïve, when
Shadow returned to Mirkwood. They both come to have more insight about the
other.

This is a fine story, Daw, one of my favorites of yours!

This beautiful story is the perfect antidote for whatever troubles you; it's
that full of joy, laughter, and love. To call it a "death fic" would be
totally off the mark, for as Sam says, "...I've never been so alive, never,

There are so many lovely moments that it's hard to single one out, but I
think that my favorite must be when Iluvatar's Son says, "Oh Samwise, you

In this short story, AmandaK does a fine job of making greater sense of a
very poorly done part of the movie!verse storyline (don’t get me started
ranting about movie!Gondor…). The writing is beautifully phrased and packs
enormous power in its simple and elegant wording. Faramir’s concern for his
men against the background of his own fear, grief and sense of failure is
deeply touching. The descriptive touches are deftly done, painting rich
scenes without overwhelming the piece. While I don’t normally read much
movie!verse, especially not stories set in Gondor, quality shines from every
line in this, and I enjoyed it immensely.

The author’s note says this is Lyllyn’s first attempt to write Hobbits. But
you wouldn’t know it! She seems to settle into the Hobbit “voice” easily and
comfortably, and the piece is written in her usual clear and effective
style. I like her expansion of how the Ruffians slowly took over the Shire,
and the way she deals with the moral dilemmas of a country under occupation,
showing how collaboration can seem a necessity rather than a choice --
especially when you have hungry Hobbit children to feed! And the last line
provides an excellent pay off in showing Robin Smallburrow’s growing
understanding that Men, as well as Hobbits, come in all shades. Very nicely
done.

There is so much to admire in this drabble, not least the way annmarwalk
carefully pitches the tone to give us a sweetly drawn yet never overly
sentimental portrait of the relationship between grandfather and grandson.
Barahir’s hero worship of his grandfather is so clearly conveyed in his
excitement at having a journal just like Faramir’s. Faramir’s love of the
countryside -- and of his family -- shines through in both the range of
knowledge he imparts to Barahir and the care with which he does so. And it’s
good to see Ithilien become a place where Faramir can safely take his
grandsons on camping trips. Well done.

Eilian and Celuwen are quite happily living in the settlement where
Celuwen's parents live, and raising a beautiful daughter, Loriel. Eilian
seems to be taking to the settled life rather well for an ex-warrior, but he
is still more attuned to the forest than most, and realizes that there is
something disturbing the trees. At first it is just a tiny frisson of
unease, but as we learn more about it, we know that there is a genuine
danger to Loriel.

Meanwhile, Legolas is settling in as Captain of the Home Guard. This is the
patrol that the young warrior Legolas did not want to be stuck in -- and now
he's captain! And the ever-honest and reliable Annael is his right hand.
What a team!

But this story seems to be as much about misdirection as anything else. We
are given something to worry about in the first chapter -- but the most
damaging event is only indirectly related to that worry. And I was so
emotionally involved with that event that this story left me with tears
streaming down my cheeks. And Thranduil's dream of the forest burning is so
telling.

Well-written, Daw.... and very wrenching.

This is the story of young Ereinion, whose parents send him to Mithlond to
take refuge with Círdan the Shipwright. It is told from his point of view: a
young child who is just beginning to be aware of the Beleriand wars coming
closer, but still feels safer among his father, Fingon, the High King of the
Noldor, and his mother. He just seems to know that this Círdan will not know
that he likes a lot of bubbles in his bath and his milk really cold. And he
really does not understand why the soldiers guarding him are angry when he
comes across a sleeping soldier in the woods, with a different kind of
uniform.

This story seems to be as much about the maturing of Círdan as it is about
the growing up of Ereinion Gil-galad. He does not have a clue how to relate
to a child -- taking him out for hours to teach him how to swim, for
example, and the readers look forward to seeing his learning process. He has
agreed to teach Ereinion the language of the Falathrim, so that is a start.

Unfortunately, this story has not been updated this year. I hope it will be
again in the near future.

A lovely wintry story about some of Pippin's battles while growing up (as
spoken of in Victories Won), though in this one, its more of a battle with
Merry's other cousin. Pippin's health becomes dire when Berilac goes round
bullying his cousins...and naturally picks on the littlest one. I love this
author's Pippin--he's quite canon. In Return of the King, he tells Bergil
that "I have never allowed anyone to stand me on my head". Key word is
"allowed". Being a small child, Pippin would commonly have been the butt of
many jokes or taking a pelting just because of his size, but he never let
them do it without giving a fight of his own. Lovely tale, lovely
hobbits--wonderful Pippin!

What an awesome, awesome tale. A tender story that portrays the first days
of Pippin's birth and a most special blessing not only by Gandalf, but by
the Valar. The author gives special insight to Pippin's amazing and
frightful beginnings, and then takes us to a place where we can see the
effect his special tasks have lead him. Frodo and Merry's tasks were just as
daunting; looking after and caring for a little hobbit cousin with a heart
of gold, a bundle of ceaseless energy, and a zest for life. I love how she
portrays Bilbo, Frodo, and especially Paladin. And she describes the
disposition of a dwarf extremely well--she has all her characters down pat.
A very well thought out tale, written with much love. Highly recommended for
anyone who absolutely LOVES Pippin! ;-)

This brief vignette sets Merry and Aragorn at brief odds over the wisdom of
sending a lletter from Bree, but it all works out in the end, with both
Frodo and Pippin given the chance to approve the final version. There are
some lovely bits in here, among them Strider's discovery that he has the son

In spite of guilt and pain, in this story Frodo can see the value of the

that's why I love it. So often the angst is overwhelming, but here Frodo is
making his choice to leave and cross the sea out of love, and he knows full

This was a plot bunny that Beethoven's 7th kept trying to force on me. I
loved the idea of the one good orc doing his part to aid in the quest but
for the life of me it was not a plot bunny I felt inspired to nurture.
Beethoven's 7th was persistant. She kept bringing the plot bunny out for me
to take notice of. Each time she revealed more details to the plot. It was
not long before I was encouraging her to make use of her plot bunny.

Finally she did and to what a tremendous success. This was her first effort
at writing fan fiction. A daring first effort in that it is a story about a
completely original character and an orc at that. There isn't a huge market
out there for such stories.

In a letter to his publisher Tolkien stated that he hoped that others would
be inspired by his own work to create and add to the world of Arda and it's
people. I feel that this story honorably fullfills that hope. Beethoven's
7th went out on a limb and considered an aspect of Middle Earth that is
often overlooked in favor of what is glamorous and beautiful. She delved
into a place of darkness and despair and found hope and a hero.

This is a tale that this reader believes Tolkien would have been most
pleased with. And even touched that Beethoven's 7th was able to go into his
place of darkness to find yet another glimmer of light.

I hope that Beethoven's 7th will continue to introduce us to more little
known and unheard of characters of Middle Earth.

I love the puzzle box - and the symbolism of the fragmented hobbit needing
to be made whole. The medal and Gimli's note are just what the doctor
ordered! It is a small part to pick from a long story all of which I
thoroughly enjoyed - but that box has a life of its own!

Merry and Pippin are often forgotten when it comes to the consequences of
the quest... nightmares, old fears and lingering pain. This exquisite little
vignette tells of Merry's pain in particular, and how Estella, his wife,
tries to handle the situation. The tale is honest, warmhearted and very
believable.... how can you give comfort if you're not even able to wake the
one you love from his nightly agony? Short, poignant and wonderful - thank

Llinos sent me here, she has been raving about the absolute perfection (a
word neither she nor I use lightly!) of this poem all day, and she seldom
raves about anything. She is right, I am just...astounded by this work. It
brought tears to my eyes.

The simple way that Elanor has of speaking was very much a hobbit lass, and
very much Sam's daughter - straightforward, truthful, and a bit humble but
yet not, as she feels in a way that she knows Frodo, and feels impelled to
say these things to him, so she does.

The metre and rhyme were perfect and there is absolutely nothing forced
about it. As I read it I could *hear* Elanor speaking, very much Sam's
daughter, someone who has grown up to have her own family, yet has retained
the down to earth roots of a gardener's daughter. One could easily imagine
her with a babe in her arms, or kneading bread, there is nothing pretentious
about her. But she also has a reserved, well-bred quality to her voice, and
she is obviously well educated.

Elanor's plaintive question to Frodo is filled with a sadness tinged with
longing. It is as if she has been a part of all that happened through her
father's stories and her reading and custody of The Red Book and yet, there
is still something missing in that she knows something enormous happened but
can never quite fully understand without having lived it. Now all is
finished and, although it turned out well, she still feels an emptiness in
that she never really knew Frodo, who was such a big part of her father's
life.

Perhaps I am not expressing myself as well as I could, but I *feel* what I
mean in my heart, and after all, that is what a poem is supposed to do.
Outstanding work, thank you so much for sharing this.

This is a wonderful and sentimental tale of the love Faramir, Pippin and
Merry hold for Boromir - and the love he held for each of them. The theme of
duty is a golden thread that runs throughout the story. The duty as a son to
one's father, the duty of a father to his children, the duty of a citizen to
their country. This is the most noble type of duty that is being presented.
Not the blind obedience of his Denethor's aids that nearly causes the death
of Faramir, but duty that stems from the deepest love.

The shadow of Boromir's blade comes to represent his love and protection
over those he cared most about. His younger brother Faramir, Merry and
Pippin all had their times of being sheltered in the shadow of Boromir's
blade.

The magical touches of Boromir's appearence are handled well and avoid
getting too sappy. The way Pippin interacts with this spirit Boromir is
perfectly done. The appearence of the new form of Evermind and the visit
from Boromir give this story a wonderful ethereal quality. PipkinSweetgrass
has written a glowing gem.

Grey_wonderer does a lovely job here of showing that it wasn't only Frodo
that had difficulty returning to the Shire and picking up the broken pieces
of his life. This story starts out in the middle, returns to the beginning
and then carries on to a very satisfying conclusion, with both Merry and
Pippin beginning to find new ways to be happy and comfortable in their home.
Even while helping Merry and Pippin heal, though, she shows us Frodo's
struggle to heal and a bit of foreshadowing of his realization that he never
will, as long as he remains in Middle-Earth.

tearing off the roof of the Smails. Am I the only one who thought of
plotbunnies immediately? Anyway, Dreamflower writes a lovely and insightful
story about the Took family where she mixes drama with humour. Paladin’s
muttering sounds so familiar when you try to nurse a man back to health,
that I felt very sorry for Eglantine. The manner how the healer and Primrose
sets he muttering Paladin straight was incredibly enjoyable. He’s deep down
a very caring and loving family man, and Dreamflower wrote this brilliantly.

This is PipkinSweetgrass' magnum opus, and it is worthy of that name. It is
a wonderfully written epic dealing with the alternitive universe idea that
Boromir survives his ordeal at Parth Galen and the funeral boat over Rauros
Falls. Strange things do happen in life, people often do survive things that
in all logical though they should not. PipkinSweegrass handles this all in a
most believable fashion.

After being rescued by the Wildmen, Boromir lives with them for a time,
learing their ways and unlearning much he once held as truth. He finally
come to realize that his time with them has come to its end and he leaves to
find his new place in the world of the Fourth Age. After a time he arrives
in the Old Forrest near Bree and takes up a new life and name, he is Boromir
Beeman, a keeper of bees. It is through a providential accident that he
makes the aquiantace of Merry and Pippin's sons and thus is reintroduced to
his dear friends from the Fellowship.

The drama continues as word reaches the Master and Thain of trouble brewing
in Gondor and they insist on Boromir going with them to see what can be
done.

PipkinSweetgrass is in process of doing a complete re-writing of the
wonderful story. The story is well worth the effort and the re-write is
working well.

This is a story that had me laughing throughout. Frodo's sudden enthusiasm
for gardening is hilarious and Sam's incredible patience is equally funny.
Frodo has all the aptitude of an over eager puppy as he plants bulbs more
like he's burying bones.

It really isn't too far out of line that Frodo is shown as a bit
incompetent, as he often is in fanfiction. All too many of us know the
person who excells at books and head knowledge, but seems incapable of doing
anything practical. Beethoven's7th's Frodo fits that type wonderfully.

A fun story to brighten a reader's day!

This is a wonderful
story!

things I'd never thought much about: Faramir needing to learn Rohirric, the
hobbits' relationship to Eowyn (there are some extremely funny bits where
some people think Merry and Pippin are children and she their mother). I'm

Delightful story!

done, not knowing what he will find. I love the image of the hobbits helping

Entire new vistas are being opened to him, to his wonder and sorrow and joy
and regret. I, too, now have an understanding of what the sea-longing must

writing on the subject.

Well done!

They both come to have more insight about the
other.

This is a fine story, Daw, one of my favorites of yours!

very poorly done part of the movie!verse storyline (don’t get me started

enormous power in its simple and elegant wording.

And it’s
good to see Ithilien become a place where Faramir can safely take his

seems to be taking to the settled life rather well for an ex-warrior, but he

something disturbing the trees.

I hope it will be
again in the near future.

assuring him of hope in the morning. Again, what a wonderful tale!

There are
some lovely bits in here, among them Strider's discovery that he has the son
of the Master of Buckland under his guard, and some poetic imagery at the
end which is somehow both beautiful and disturbing.

In spite of guilt and pain, in this story Frodo can see the value of the

that's why I love it. So often the angst is overwhelming, but here Frodo is
making his choice to leave and cross the sea out of love, and he knows full
well why he is choosing as well to leave Sam behind.

The author covers the many indications of spirituality in JRRT's work, apart
from "religion". A very good look into his use of Christian symbolism. I
especially like her pointing out the role of Eagles in Middle-earth.

Grey Wonderer’s A Soldier’s tale reminded me a lot of Calvin – from Calvin &
Hobbes – when he’s on a space adventure. I loved the manner how Merry
relates his adventure being The General (and the Intruder, the Old
Campaigner, the Advisor). The way how Merry and Pippin settle their argument
is very well written and fluffy. Very creative Grey Wonderer!

I am just chuckling very hard at the very thought of Giant Pink Rabbits
tearing off the roof of the Smails.
But those bunnies… *grin* And we also know now from whom Pippin inherited
that stubborn part. A great story Dreamflower!
