Banner Polls Closing Soon! Posted by Marta Layton October 12, 2005 - 10:11:17 Topic ID# 5620Hey guys,
Today is October 12, which means just three more days to vote for your
banners. If you intend to vote make sure you get this done by midnight
October 15, US Central time. The banner with the most votes will be the
one used by the authors who win that award.
To vote, go to http://gabrielle.sytes.net/mefa/awardbanners.html and
look at the banners for a given category. Open another window and go to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mefawards/polls/ and click on the poll
asking about that category. Select your favourite, and click the submit
button. Voila!
So why don't you give your fingernails a rest (I know I've been biting
on mine waiting for the results) and, if you haven't done so already,
vote for the banners?
Cheers,
Marta

Posted by MarigoldCotton@aol.com October 12, 2005 - 18:39:37 Topic ID# 5620Thanks Marta, this works much better than the way I attempted to vote on the banners the other day - I had given up. I am going through them all slowly but surely now! It is still horrendously slow on dial up though. I've been at it over an hour and am only a bit more than half way through.
Just to let you know in case you don't, there is a broken link: R/P Dwarves Erebor #5.

I apologise for the way I set up the polls. It does push people toward
a way of voting that's not the most efficient. It's actually the way
that's easiest me, but not probably for other people.

Can you or anyone else see a better way to do this? Would it make sense
to have all the banners on one page? That way you could let it all load
at once while you did something else.

This is the reason I labelled this (attn: Ainae) . Ainae, weren't you
going to upload this to your website?
FYI, for everyone, Erebor #5 is in the photos section of the Yahoo
group.
http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/MEFAwards/lst
Then:
1. "Award banner submissions"
2. "Dwarves"
3. "Erebor"

And instead of radio buttons there were checkboxes so you could select more than one. But there was a warning attached to each poll stating that you could only vote for one banner for 1st place, one for 2nd, and one for 3rd. If you didn't follow this rule, your ballot wasn't counted.
And then in the poll question itself, it said something about this being the ballot for the Rohan category and then it gave the link to the page where the Rohan award submissions were posted. So if we'd wanted to do it that way for this year, the link for Rohan would be http://gabrielle.sytes.net/mefa/bannersrohan.html
That's what I remember, anyway. And for me, the voting went pretty fast. All the awards per category were on one page and on one poll and there weren't quite as many cut and paste jobs required. I liked it. But I think I remember a few complaints about it, too. Can't remember exactly what, but I know they were there...

it, (after the fifteenth) then the poll and the pictures will be on the same
page, so there won't be any going back and forth at all. I honestly missed
the link to the banners at the MEFA site, and used the photos at the yahoo
site, because for some reason it never occured to me to scroll down *bangs
head on desk*, but using the MEFA site pictures still involves going back
and forth from the poll to the pictures.
The whole thing made me feel like there has to be a better way to build a
railroad.

You know, you're probably right. Now that I think that, that does seem
(vaguely) familiar. And you're right, it probably would work better
than the current set-up.
This is definitely something to discuss in the post-mortem. It seems
like people have lots of ideas for how to improve this section of the
awards, and I agree, there needs to be a better way to do this.
Remember, if you have any ideas you'd like to discuss at the
post-mortem, email them to mefasupport@gmail.com . Everyone who had
ideas here, would you be willing to put them in a quick email to that
address? Even forwarding the emails you sent to this group should work.
This is just so I can keep it all organised.

I agree -- I'm feeling like there's definitely a better way to do
things, or should be.
Even if we're able to do the img src thing, there will still be the
problem of all the images loading on slower connections. I have my own
ideas, but I definitely want to hear what others think. Like I said,
definitely something to discuss in the post-mort.
