Re: Digest Number 516 Posted by PGail99@aol.com October 15, 2005 - 21:52:06 Topic ID# 5645
I appreciate what seems to have been an incredible amount of hard work in
the MEFA 2005 Awards process, from nominations to the Awards themselves. Thanx
to all concerned - Ainae, Anthony, Marta, Sulriel and everyone else.

I wonder, after the Awards are announced, will those who did not win still
be able to access the reviews for their stories, not to mention all the other
wonderful stories that were submitted this year, of which only a relative few
could win or place?

You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the awards.

Yes. When voting closed, the links you clicked to vote on stories
disappeared. Now, there are two new links to see the results, and
besides stories that won an award you'll see that noted. Otherwise
everything is the same.

So yes, you can still see the reviews the same way you could before. If
you're not a member, you can log in as a guest and should be able to
read the reviews.

Awards Notice Subject Line Posted by Jane Abbott October 16, 2005 - 9:56:27 Topic ID# 5645
Marta--
My e-mail software saw the subject line "And the winner is..." and sent the
message right to the junkmail folder, along with the offers of fake Rolex
watches and Viagra! I couldn't figure out how everyone else already knew
the results, LOL! I don't have any special junkmail filters set so this is
a default setting of the program. You might want to resend the awards
notice with a different subject line.
Regards
Branwyn

Good idea, Branwyn! I have to admit I'm pretty bad at picking subject
lines and seem to have a knack for hitting on ones that to me seem
clever but end up flagged as spam.

Let me know if this comes through okay.

Hey guys,

As promised, here are the results for this year's Middle-earth
Fanfiction Awards. :-D These names will also be available at the
MEFA2005 sites by midnight tonight. A lot of these categories were
really close, and there were lots of well-liked stories that fell just
below the "honourable mention" threshold. (Remember, honourable
mentions are awarded to those stories within three points of third place.)

Don't forget to vote for your favourite banners by midnight tonight
(Central time). These will be available for the authors to use as soon
as we can get bars added specifying the subcategory; we'll email the
winners when the banners are ready for you to use.

And if you have any ideas for the post-mortem, send them to
mefasupport@gmail.com .

Once again, congratulations! To the winners and to the authors of the
many other excellent stories that didn't quite make this list.

Cheers,
Marta

Cheers,
Marta

2005 MEFA Winners; Posted by erin\_hobbit\_ofbt October 19, 2005 - 21:39:23 Topic ID# 5645
Goodness, I am behind!

Please, please forgive me while I say that I am utterly confused. I
saw the announcement here of the 2005 MEFA awards, and nearly dropped
my teeth to see *my* name so many times! Gadzookes! *blushes fire
engine red*

However ... I am confused because when I went to the MEFA website,
http://gabrielle.sytes.net/MEFA2005/index.php?page=index , and
clicked on Story Results, I only found one of my stories listed,
where the listing here looks like there were 4. (Though my name
seems to appear with bewildering frequency more times.) Are other
awards listed somewhere else? Are we supposed to look at the dropdown
menu and look at each category? LOL, since I can't remember the
categories, I don't know where to go to see where else I'm listed.

And primarily I wanted to offer thanks by name to those who so
blessed me with their reviews! :-)

Anyhow ... is there ever going to be one, central listing of authors,
so folks can just go find their name and see what is what? Or do we
have to search by category to find them? I honestly can't tell what
what my stories have won! :-p

Please pardon my obtuseness, but I don't think I navigate websites
very well. *G*
Cheers ~

I couldn't find any way to look at all of the awards at once through the
story winners link either. But if you go to browse stories and select just
your own stories you should see what won where.

Argh. I'm clearly missing something.

When I browse stories, I can find my own stories no problem, and even
go read the remarks attendant to them. But I can't tell that way
what received what honor, or not. I'm honestly not trying to be
difficult, I'm just ... confused. And hoping for a simpler way to
figure out what happened, than using the "find" function to locate my
name on the first post listing all the winners! ;-) I really don't
want to claim something I didn't actually win, just because I got
lost reading the list. *G*

Anyhow, probably I need to be patient whilst the Powers That Be sort
out more logistics. I'm going back under my rock, now. ;-)
Cheers ~

Erin

Hi Erin. I'm confused, too, so forgive me if I'm misunderstanding what
the trouble is. If you go to the YAHOO MEFA site, there's a link at
the top of the page that brings you to an e-mail list of all category
and sub-category winners, honorable mentions, and author awards.

If you go to the MEFA 2005 site where you cast your votes, then you
can only view awards and honorable mentions in one category at a time,
unless there's a trick I'm missing. You just have to load each
category separately. There's a little "Change File" link or some such
thing at the top of the screen, just below the main menu bar. Click
it, and a drop down menu will appear. Click the main category, not the
slide out subcategory menu, and you'll get a category overview of
which stories won. I think the same thing goes for authors, but that's
a totally different menu.

Hope that helps,

Dwim

Erin, if you look at your stories on the voting site, you'll see that the
right hand column, labelled "Actions" now has notations for which ones you
won. To see which category, look at the second column from the left
(labelled "title") just below the line with the rating.
Congratulations on two third place wins and two honorable mentions!

Don't worry about being confused. That's part of why I'm here. :-)

The Story Results page you're talking about displays the results by
category. Unfortunately, there's no way to display the winners for all
the awards on one screen. I'll talk to Anthony to see if this is
available. (Originally I think we set it up this way when it displayed
the banners by default, and we didn't want to be too hard on peoples'
dial-up connections.)

For stories, you can also look at the "Browse Stories" section. To see
just the stories by a certain author select that name from the
drop-down list and click "display nominations". Alternately, you can
click the "Authors" link over that column and it will sort the list by
author. Stories that won an award will have that award displayed in the
far-right column.

YW! May I thank you for giving us such wonderful stories worthy of
those reviews?

You know, I have a list a lot like that. I made it to help me make
emails to winners, and so it has the authors' email address, but it
also has the story and author awards that they won. If you guys think
it would be helpful I can delete the emails and post it to the list.

Hello you two ~

Okay, that helps somewhat ... The story awards are there. Whew!
LOL, sorry to be so dense, but I couldn't figure out where to look or
how!

Well, then one more question. How do I find and verify any Author
awards? When I go to the voting site and try searching Browse By
Author, it wants me to Select a Main Category to See Authors.
However, none of the categories match the names for the author honors.

For example, on the email listing here
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MEFAwards/message/5644, I find I have
one author honor under "Authors: General: Helms Deep Award (2nd)". I
think that's under the Rohan category - but there is no Rohan
category in the Main Cat To See Authors.

So once again, the incredibly dense hobbit pleads for help ... How do
I make sure of what is really what, so I don't claim anything I don't
really have and make myself look like an idiot? An even bigger
idiot, that is? *G*

Thanks, Dwim and Rabidsamsfan - sorry I'm a bit slow on the
uptake. ;-)
Cheers ~

P.S.

THANK YOU for the kind words. :-) Once I make sure of what I've
really got, I hope to be able to thank everyone who voted for my
stories by name, since I really AM - contrary to my compaining -
extremely flattered and happy that I got any mention at all in the
MEFAs!

So, THANK YOU everyone for your support in my writing all these
years. :-)
Cheers ~

Yep, Helm's Deep Award is second place for the Rohan category. If you
go to "2005 MEFA Author Results" you can select "Races/Places: Rohan".
Your name is listed under second place for the "General" subcategory.

I find the whole "know the category to find the award" thing incredibly
frustrating, actually. Is there any chance of a simple list, linked from the
MEFA/2005 page as well as on the yahoo site?

Sorry for the frustration. It is a bit awkward.

I've emailed Anthony to ask if he can give us an "All Categories"
option on those two pages. So instead of displaying just one category
it would display all of them, just like he filters on other pages work.
I'm waiting to hear back whether this is possible, but don't expect an
answer until he gets home from work tonight.

Thanks, Marta!

I'm with Rabidsamfan - I can't keep the categories straight, and
unless I want to sit down with the original email that listed all the
winners, and mark things with yellow highlighter and double-check the
category headings to make sure I haven't skipped one ... I'm pretty
much lost.

Also, this may be nit-picking in the extreme, but another thought
occured to me. The winners are only visible to those logged into the
MEFA voting site. Is there a way people simply out there in the
general public can see who won what? This I think would be nice for
our authors. Even if people didn't vote in the MEFAs, a lot of
silent fan fic readers out there would undoubtedly enjoy being able
to just browse through the MEFA listings, and see that their favorite
authors have been honored. Didn't we have a public list of winners
in 2004? Or is that in the planning, and I'm just being impatient?

Okay, trouble-making hobbit is slinking off now. :-) I will cease
whining and leave our VERY hard-working MEFA staff to do as they see
fit. Thank you again for all the thousands of hours everyone has put
into these awards! {{*HUGS!*}}

Cheers ~

I understand! I hardly use the tools that are available to everyone
now, because I saw all the results when I was formatting that email. So
I'm sure I don't see problems that other people do.

Don't worry about nit-picking. that's the only way to improve things.

Technically anyone can see the winners by clicking the "Log in as
guest". But I agree, logging in at all can be a bit off-putting.

Last year we had the winners on a website that Ainae put together,
http://home.earthlink.net/~ainae/mefa/ . I assume Ainae will do the
same this year.

One thing I've thought of is setting up an LJ community for the MEFAs.
Do you think people would find that helpful? I know that a lot of
people are more comfortable with LJs than Yahoo groups. If so, I would
be glad to set up something and post the results there.

Marta

The list from the main MEFA page for the 2004 winners is actually very
nicely done -- I love it that it links to the stories. (And if I were going
to change anything it would be to have a main link for the authors who won
as well.) It would be a good model to follow for a general list.
Since I use LJ all the time, I'd say yes to a community there happily. The
Yahoo group has some nice toys, but I saw a lot of people on my friends list
on LJ who couldn't figure out how to participate. I think they were
intimidated by the "sign up here" and then "get a password there" deal,
because it wasn't easy to understand why you needed both.
If you did form a community and asked people for feedback via
middleearthnews a lot of the LJ LotR people would see the announcement, and
might respond, especially if you asked what felt like a barrier!

I think that's a great idea: an LJ community that could keep people up to speed on what's happening with the MEFAs. It could also be used to drum up interest when next year's nominating season rolls around. It wouldn't replace the yahoo!group, but it would be a wonderful supplement, and could also serve to attract new members for the MEFAs.

Putting my two cents in here as well, I think there does need to be a list
for the general public of this year's winners, whether it's on LJ or a site.
Right now, the awards aren't very accessible to the casual browser, and while
we garnered some great reviews out of the process, a publicly accessible
list might also garner some more readers, and even a new writer or two.

Just another perspective, LJ can have the same effect on people who
are used to Yahoo groups. For them, so I have experienced, it can be
just as mind boggling. So another place to go for MEFA news and
things... wow, it would be a task to keep track of both... let alone
maintenance..

Just my 2 cents, back to the banners..

Yeah, it is largely a matter of what you're used to. But like the yahoo
group messages, the LJ comments would be sent to the person who maintains
the community as an e-mail, and once you set it up, you could even make the
e-mail be the one for the yahoo group (although I'd think long and hard
about that one.)
The vast majority of the information, though, could be cut-n-pasted from
one medium to the other without a lot of difficulty. Or set up as a webpage
under the gabrielle.sytes.net <http://gabrielle.sytes.net> stuff and only
pointers put out via LJ and Yahoo. That way discussions like this one could
be carried on by the people most comfortable with the way they were asked.
For the post-mortem discussions, at least, I think that it might be helpful
to reach out to the LJ writers to ask what they found easy and hard. It's
worth an experiment, anyway.

Would it be possible to make the LJ and yahoo group each a 'member'
of the other group so a post or reply posted either place would show
up in both? I don't know enough about how these things work, but I
LJ'd for awhile and found them awkward with my old system and dial-up.

I agree that we need to reach as many people as possible, but I also
know that doubling the places to be tends to halve the people at each
spot.

As long as the needed information is passed and questions answered -
I suppose for a group like that, that is what matters.

Well one of the bonuses to my way of thinking is that you don't actually
have to have an LJ in order to comment in one. Whereas you need a yahoo ID
-- and another password to forget -- to join up with a Yahoogroup and you
can't send messages to the other members or the world at large without being
a member.
(And I've gotten more spam from Yahoo than I ever have from LJ, but that's
a different matter, nevermind, anyway!...)

I think you're right about needing one. I'm not sure when we'll get it
up (hopefully reasonably soon), but we will get something publicly

Hey guys,

Lots of opinions! Good stuff. I'm going to reply to these in one batch
email. But I'm also going to make a bit of an executive decision, which
I think reflects what most people are saying:

The LJ community sounds like a good idea, so I'll create one as soon as
I finish some other MEFA-related stuff. But it will be a supplement to
the Yahoo group, not a replacement. I will try to keep up with the LJ
community, but my first priority will be answering posts at the Yahoo
group. If someone from here can watch this list and let me know if
there's something that looks like it needs an admin reply but I haven't
seen, that will be good.

Now on to the posts...

I too am most comfortable with Yahoo groups, but I know people who are
much more comfortable with LJs. I think it's more a matter of personal
experience and preference. One's not necessarily better than the other.

My feeling is if there are people who are willing to discuss MEFAs at a
LJ who aren't at a Yahoo group, I'd rather have those opinions than
not. But the Yahoo group will still be the official source of
information, and if you want voting privileges you'll still have to
sign up for this group.

Thanks! I really appreciate your help on those.

I'm finding all of this fascinating. My involvement in LJ is to chat
with friends. I know that many of them are quicker to answer an LJ post
than an email. I don't use it for big group stuff like the MEFAs,
though apparently some do.

Just to reassure you and anyone else :-) We're not getting rid of the
Yahoo group, and we'll still discuss things here. And the LJ community
will be set up so that you can leave an "anonymous" comment so
non-members, even people without LJ comments, can leave comments if you
feel so inclined.

The links will be tricky, but I really want them myself. If I can't
figure out a simple way to do them it will just take longer to get that
up.

*ponders* I think Safari picks up links when you copy and paste for it,
which would make things a lot simpler! Right now I'm sending out emails
to the winners and when that's done I need to answer some emails so it
may be tomorrow or this weekend before I can work on this. But I'll
come up with something.

As for author links, I really can't see a way to do that at all easily.
I know we have a space for people to enter the URL of their homepage,
but that isn't displayed in the section I pull the information from
these pages from. But I'll think about it and see if I can think of a
way to do this.

> It would be a good model to follow for a general list.

By "general list" do you mean one for 2004 and 2005? I think what I'm
thinking of is a list very similar to what we had for 2004, covering
2005's winners.

Yes, that's what I'm looking for at this point. Throughout the year I
see the LJ as a place to post announcements, and a venue where people
could ask questions.

Rabidsamfan, do you know when announcements need to be in to
Middle-earth News for them to make this week's newsletter?

This is a good point. I know that with this Yahoo group, you can read
it without being a member. Technically it's not posible for non-members
to send messages to a Yahoo group, but a LJ would allow us to take this
principal a step further.

I have a hard time seeing how that would work. I think to do that we'd
need to have the address that LJ uses to send posts be a member of this
group, and I'm not sure how we'd set that up.

What might be a good idea would be for some person to take
responsibility to forward important posts to this Yahoo group, so
people know what's going on.

I suppose my question is how much over-lap there is. From what people
have said, it seems like there are lots of people who just aren't
participating at all. In which case the impact may not be as big as we
think. I hope so, at least.

Middle earth news comes out daily, so you could get a notice in there by the
next day. All the info you need is over at
http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=middleearthnews.
I'd think of an LJ community being supplemental as well, since the Yahoo
group has a lot of features which LJ doesn't. The little automatic messages
about the end of voting season, for instance, aren't possible on LJ, as far
as I know.
But I'll cheerfully confess to not entirely understanding why you have to
join the Yahoo group in order to have voting privileges, when all the voting
is done at the database on the MEFA page. I've benefited, obviously, from
playing with all the e-mails, but it's clear that a great many folks either
didn't get them or didn't ever respond to any of them. Since I had a
password at the MEFA page because I was an author, it felt like I ought to
be able to go ahead and vote with it, and the Yahoo group felt like a hoop I
was being asked to jump through unnecessarily. I jumped, yes, because I
wanted to vote, but how many authors never joined the Yahoo group, or joined
it very late in the process?

You can leave an anonymous comment if you wish, but well, not everyone
feels fine with that, so then they still have to go to the routine of
signing up, thinking about a username, get everything varified and such.

In this sense it is the same amount of work as for signing up for
yahoo. Both support RSS feeds (that is the way I can keep track of
this group), so I don't prefer one above the other. You can always
read messages from here and not having to sign up for yahoo.

I use both equally, but not everyone is into LJ. Yahoo has so many
nifty features, but it puts people off if they have to go for one
thing to this site and for that to a different place (too many clicks
to get somewhere). Also, I am afraid that two groups will be formed
(as Sulriel mentioned).

Maybe it's an idea to set up a nice and friendly forum at the MEFA
site to keep everything together at one place (a forum, the place to
vote/review, the FAQ, banners).

Well both give me an equal amount of spam, actually more from LJ then
Yahoo I think...

Oh, wonderful! For some reason I thought it was a weekly thing. I'll
let them know as soon as I have the LJ set up. Hopefully today, though
possibly not until tomorrow.

Also, we admins need a simple way to disseminate information and know
that once we have announced it there it "counts" as an announcement.
We'll make a good-faith effort to post both places, of course, but I
can see a situation where we're busy and the post to the LJ just
doesn't happen.

If it's made at the Yahoo group everyone involved in the awards has
access to the information, and I think they have a responsibility to
know that information. Take for example the contingency plan we had for
voting in case the site was down on that last day. We made an
announcement here at the Yahoo group, and if that situation had arisen
and someone came to us saying they weren't sure to do, I'm fairly
certain the admins would have said that it was the reviewer's
responsibility to keep up with announcements like that. Let's say that
the announcement was made at the Yahoo group but for some reason never
carried over to the LJ. Then I'd say that the people at the LJ still
have a responsibility to be aware, and the fact that the announcement
was never made at the LJ doesn't excuse them.

This is a question that's been brought up before, by I think Garnet
Took at the [S_o_a] listserv. As I told him, I'm keeping my own opinion
to myself until the post mortem. And it will definitely be discussed
then, I promise you! :-)

Thanks for your opinions, RSF. Always a pleasure.

Keeping everything together has a very nice friendly sound to it. It can be very off-putting to have to click a lot to find what you're looking for, and even more so if you don't know that you're supposed to. In the Live Journal debates I'm woefully uninformed, but I know I like simplicity. Regards - Chathol-linn

I'm not very fond of LJ communities. Still haven't figured out how to go
about it and I don't want a LJ journal. Not much of a journal writer and the
few journals I have visited all required you to have a journal to
participate. I'm perfectly happy with the Yahoo group.

I agree on this. I think we need ONE place where
people discuss things. I use both Yahoo and LJ
for various things, but I just don't have TIME to
look at two places to get everyone's opinions!
Personally, next year, I for one would MUCH
prefer if discussion were kept all in one place.
It's a lot easier to search for things and it's a
lot more centralised. It may disadvantage SOME
people, but everyone is eligable to sign up to
both Yahoo groups and LJ, so neither option is
discriminatory - provided LJ allows anonymous
comments. I personally think Yahoo is easier,
because it can all be looked at simply by
checking your email - which most people seem to
do on a fairly regular basis.

Just my two cents,
