MEFA2005 down.... Posted by ainaechoiriel October 17, 2005 - 8:29:22 Topic ID# 5742
I'm investigating it.

I tried to VNC to Starbase (one of my computers) and wouldn't get an
answer. So I tried pinging my site, no reply. Tried pulling up
MEFA2005,: operation timed out. Tried GoToMyPC to get to DS9 (another
computer) and I'm in. With one computer, I should be able to reach all
the others.

Could be the gizmo for the internet telephone. If it's a hardware
issue like that, I can't do anything until my fiance gets to the house
at lunch. (It'd be great if I could train the cats in home networking,
wouldn't it?) If it's software (firewall), I might be able to get to
it before then. I'll see what I can do (though I also need to
actually do work at work, so it won't be as fast as if I was at home).

Update Re: MEFA2005 down.... Posted by ainaechoiriel October 17, 2005 - 9:11:16 Topic ID# 5742
It DOES have to do with the Gizmo (technical name of the device,
really!). It sits between my cable modem and my router. My router is
not showing my internet IP address so it's getting swallowed somewhere
along the route before the router, thus at the Gizmo.

(Translation for the less technical: MY cable gets an internet IP
address from my ISP, Earthlink. That address is how your browser
finds anything on gabrielle.sytes.net. My router takes that address
and then masks any of my other computers, handing out internal IP
addresses to them. There are some ports on the router that are open
to allow traffic through, like the HTTP port that let's requests to
gabrielle.sytes.net hit ENTERPRISENX01, the computer that acts as my
web server. Since the router is not getting the internet address
Earthlink gave me, but an internal one, the ports are open but no
browser knows how to find them. They're looking for the internet IP
address. It's getting lost in the Gizmo.)

Unfortunately, that means it's hardware. I might be able to fix it
via my fiance at lunch. If it takes longer than that, it won't be
until this evening after I get home.

Really wishing she could teach her cats home networking.

If Ainae's servers have been unavailable again today because of
technical problems, does that mean the banners fanart has also been
inaccessible (I couldn't get to it just now)? And do we therefore need
to extend voting for the tiebreakers on the banners fanart contest
another day?

Maybe it's not necessary, but I thought I should flag it up. As of
writing this message, it looks like somewhere between a third and half
of the people who voted in the fanart contest originally have voted in
the tiebreakers.

Also I'm not sure how practical this is with a Yahoo Group poll - can
the deadline be extended without losing the votes already cast?

Cheers, Liz

Well, yes, they are unavailable at least until after 4pm (another hour
and a half or so). There are two existing problems. 1) The Gizmo did
swallow my IP address. We'll have to address that. 2) No internet
even after removing the Gizmo. Why?

Didn't have time to check it over lunch. My fiance was late getting
back as it was. But I have an idea for him to check when he gets off
work. You know those cats that don't know home networking? They just
might know how to disrupt it: FFP Feline Flight Phenomenon. Trust me,
if you ever saw Lina and Belle in the morning, you'd think cats could
fly, too. Anyway, I did move that amplifier from the living room to
the bedroom (which helped the cable reception on the TV quite a bit).
It goes under the roll top desk and is installed between the wall
outlet (for cable) and the splitter (that splits the cable between the
modem and my TV stuff). Now, I can't see the cats knocking any of
those coaxial cables loose. They're the screw on kind. But they might
have unplugged the amplifier. Not sure if the cable would still go
through without the electricity to that amplifier. We'll see if we
can get that figured out after my fiance gets off work. I hope it's
as simple as that amplifier.

As for the polls, if they are extended, all present votes will be
thrown out. That happens anytime you edit a poll. Why aren't the
banners on the regular MEFA site, you may wonder? Because the site
ran out of space last year. It won't hold all the pages and the
banners. I get a limitted amount of space through Earthlink.

Banners can be seen on the Yahoo site in the Photos section. Though
the labels might not match exactly the numbering they were given on
the MEFA site pages. If someone knows what the tying banners LOOK
LIKE, perhaps we can edit their titles on the Yahoo site so that they
can be identified.

who knows she should find some work to be doing....

That's what I'm going to have to talk with Earthlink or possibly Time
Warner about. The TV in the bedroom works, the amplifier is plugged
in.... There's got to be a different problem.

who will be heading home in another half hour or so.

Hi Liz,

I have no problem (in theory!) extending voting. As Ainae pointed out
we can't change the closing date without losing the votes of everyone
who has voted. So here's what I'll do.

1. With the original polls I ended up having to close them manually. If
they do not close automatically I will keep them open until the 19th.

2. If the polls do close automatically, feel free to post what you
would have voted for through the nineteenth. If anyone does this I'll
mark them down on a note card and add them to the tallies.

In any event, votes need to be made by midnight on August 19th.

Cheers,
Marta
