I've moved your story from "Men: General" to "Adventure: General", per
your request.

I realize that the form was different this year than it was last year,
that it was long enough to make people not read very carefully, and
that there's a fair amount of room for improvement there. That's why
the other categorizers and myself are trying to move around stories
when we can. We really do want the best possible placing for all the
stories. However, there might come a case when moving a story would
make either the category it's moving out of too small or the one it's
moving into too big. That's why it's so important that we have good
information from the start.

Hi Jane,

You're welcome for moving the story, definitely. But your comment makes me think there
might be some confusion as to what categories the MEFAs use.

When an author has a story nominated they provide us the following information:

* The time period the story is set in (First Age and prior, Second Age, 1-2849 TA, 2850
-3017 TA, 3018-3022 TA, Fourth Age and Beyond, Multi-Age)
* The race which the story primarily focuses on (Elves, Hobbits, Dwarves, Men, Villains,
Cross-Cultural)
* The primary genre of the story (Action, AU, Crossover, Drama, Horror, Mystery,
Romance)

And then you rank those three pieces of information. This gives the people who categorize
stories three potential categories you want us to put your story into, and it tells us your
preference for where you would most like your story to compete.

Maybe the best way to explain is with an example. Let's say you have a story with the
following information:

* Time Period: The Great Years
* Race: Hobbits
* Genre: Humour
* Category Ranking: Genre, Time Period, Race

The first thing the categorizers will try to do is place your story in "Humour" main
category. We do this beecause you ranked Genre as the first place you'd like us to try to
categorize your story, and you selected Humour as your genre. If there were not enough
Humour stories nominated we would then try to place it in your time period choice of "The
Great Years", and if that did now work we would look at your race choice of Humour.

So there is no main category like "Men:Action/Adventure:The Great Years". That is the way
the website displays the categories you chose; last year I think the website displayed it as:

First Choice Category: Men
Second Choice Category: Action/Adventure
Third Choice Category: The Great Years

Next year, if you would rather your piece compete in Action/Adventure rather than Men,
you should rank your categories as Genre-Races-Time Period, not Races-Genres-Time
Period.

Does this at all make sense? I do realize it's a bit confusing, and I'm trying to figure out
what we need to do to make things run smoother next year.

categories will be in the end. My categorization was based on my guess
(which was wrong) as to what the viable categories would be. Fewer possible
permutations of categories might make the process cleaner.

Hi Branwyn,

I'm not sure I understand just what you mean by permutations of
categories. Each story will compete in exactly one category. Some people
view their story as being primarily about a certain race, others as
being primarily about a certain time period, and still others as being
primarily a particular genre of writing.

The real question is what you want your story competing against. If you
want your stories competing against other pieces about the same race,
you should choose race as your first-choice category. On the other hand,
if your piece is a Crossover and you would rather it compete with other
Crossovers instead of other pieces with the same race or the same time
period, you should choose Genre as your first choice.

Then think about the other two possibilities. Going with our crossover
category, if there are not enough crossovers for that to be a
possibility, would you rather it compete against other pieces with the
same race, or set in the same time period? Whichever is your second
choice, you should choose that as your second-choice for categories.

Here's a scenario: you have a crossover about elves in modern times. You
want it to compete with crossovers, and if that is not a possibility,
you would rather it compete with other fourth age and beyond pieces, and
only elves as a last resort.

You should then select the following:

Times - Fourth Age and Beyond
Races - Elves
Genres - Crossover
Ranking: Genres-Times-Races

The website would then display your category choices as

Crossovers: Fourth Age and Beyond: Elves

But there is no category "Crossovers: Fourth Age and Beyond: Elves".
These are three separate categories, in the order that you would like us
to try to place them.

Now, we can definitely talk about cutting down on the number of
categories. We weren't able to offer several of the categories at all
because there were not enough stories nominated that fit there. But
there are not really permutations of categories, where

"Crossovers: Fourth Age and Beyond: Elves"

would be a different category than

"Elves: Crossovers: Fourth Age and Beyond".

Neither of those are real categories; they are a list of three
categories, showing what order the author wants us to try them when
we're placing their story.

The real question becomes how to make all of this clear to the author
when they're filling out their form. Branwyn, you are not the only one
confused by this!

Anthony, would it be possible to display the cateory choices like we did
last year? If I remember correctly, we had something like

First Category Choice:
Second Category Choice:
Third Category Choice:

That would probably be clearer, but I'm not sure if it's technically
possible or not.

Yes.

I just did it this way to save space, as there is quite a bit of info
about each story showing. Formatting is really pretty easy to change.
