Could "Gold Rings and Sam" (a Dr. Seuss parody) be moved to a humor category
instead of general poetry?

Thanks,

Hi Jane,

I'm sorry, but we can't really move "Gold Rings and Sam" to a humor
category. It has always been a rule of these awards that poetry competes
against other poems. So if we moved it to a humor subcategory it would
be compete there against full-length stories.

And rules aside, I don't think it'd do as well there. I looked at last
year's results, and assuming I did my math right (and I'm reasonably
sure I did), full-length stories (what would have the story type "Story"
this year, which was called "Other Fiction" then) got on average of
37.19 points per story. Poems got an average of 21.65. I think this is
probably because more people don't review poems, or they don't have the
technical knowledge of poetry they feel like they need to write a longer
review. In any event, I don't think a poem would be on equal footing
with a full-length story. It's why we keep them separate.

There are some humor poems in your category, so it's not like you'd be
competing against all other serious poems. I do realize it's not the
best solution (and I'm really sorry we didn't have more poems nominated
so we could have a better set up for them), but I'm not sure that the
alternative would be better.

If you'd like I *would* be glad to make a note in your summary that it's
a humorous poem, so that's obvious to people reading it.

Marta
