Hmm. Here's where I see the current year system becoming confusing, as
we look at Bilbo and Theodred and Aragorn as being considered
"Mid-third Age," although we know these stories to take place at the
end of the third age, happening in the last hundred years of that age.

Hi Bonnie,

It is a little counterintuitive. However, at the website the years of
each of the Third Age categories are listed.

We tried to divide up the stories between:

- Early Third Age: largely "ancient history" by the time of the Ring
War. For the most part they don't involve the characters of Lord of the
Rings (at least the mortal). Anything up to 2850 T.A./1250 S.R. goes in
this category.

- Mid-Third Age: largely the childhoods of the mortal characters of
LotR. Also the events of The Hobbit and the political situations leading
up to the Ring War. Anything after 2850 T.A./1250 S.R. and before 3018
T.A./1418 S.R.

- Late Third Age: the events of the War of the Ring itself, and also the
aftermath up through the start of the Fourth Age. So we're talking
anything 3018 T.A. or later in the Third Age (1418-1422 S.R.)

The divisions are because Third Age is so huge and encompasses so many
different characters, styles of stories, and levels of readers. (Many
more people will read about young Boromir and Faramir than Gondor's
Kinslaying, just because it's a more popular area of canon.)

So.... that's what's going on there. It's not an equal division of the
Third Age into parts that are equal in terms of the # of years it
covers. Instead we're trying to cover time periods where there seems to
be different types of stories going on.

I'm open to renaming the categories or dividing up Third Age in a
different way. However, I'd like to discuss it during the post-mortem
after these awards are over, if that's okay with you.

Thanks,

Marta

Yes, changing them for next year would be more important at this
time--I agree there, Marta.
