Many are the friends and associates in this fandom who have helped,
inspired, and encouraged me over the past two years. During the 2006
holiday season, I wanted to begin to thank them for the gift of their
support and friendship. These drabble series were written in response
to the requests and preferences of friends. The word count of each is
exactly a multiple of 100 words and all are based on The Silmarillion.

I think this belongs in a fixed-length category, as it is clearly
stated in the summary that it is a drabble series.
And another question: I know that stories compete on subcategory
level. But in the 2nd example above, and in many other instances, your
headings for a particular category is "main category". As these are,
as far as I can see, all the "general" stories, shouldn't they be
called that on the _sub_category level, not the _main_ category level?

I think you should ask Dawn, but as I recall this series, she uses the term
"drabble" in its more general sense of meaning a short single scene and, as I
remember without looking it up and checking each one, they are all different
lengths.

Re: Check Ballots #1 Posted Posted by Elena Tiriel August 03, 2007 - 17:36:24 Topic ID# 8058Hi Imhiriel,
Thanks for asking about Fell and Fair, but I prefer that it compete with
other Fixed-length Ficlets rather than Incompletes. My liaison, Sulriel,
very generously worked with me until it was categorized as I wish.
It is an ongoing drabble series (almost a drabble novel, LOL!) with a story
arc... When the story arc is complete, I will consider the series complete,
but currently some scenes in the middle are missing....
So, as a story arc, it is incomplete, but as a drabble series, it *can* be
evaluated in its current form against other drabbles.

Hi Imhiriel,
that get their own subcategories (FLFs, incompletes, and poetry) we let
the author choose which subcategory type they want it to compete with.
In this case the story is a fixed-length ficlet because it is a series
where each part is exactly 100 words, but as you note it's also a
work-in-progress. Elena Tiriel chose to have it compete with the
fixed-length ficlets, and since it meets the definition of a FLF series,
that's where we're having it compete.
at the link the author provides
(http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/archive/home/viewstory.php?sid=78),
you'll notice that many of the stories are longer than 500 words.
According to the MEFA rules, for a story to compete with the
fixed-length ficlets it has to have a word count of some nice "round
number" up to 500 words (like 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, 500, etc.);
or be a series where each part has a word count that's one of those
round numbers. In any case the maximum word count for any part of the
series is 500 words. Many parts of Dawn's series have word counts well
over 500 words, so those parts aren't fixed-length ficlets according to
the MEFA definition. And therefore the story as a whole can't be a
fixed-length ficlet stories, so it has to be placed with the full-length
stories.

Hi Imhiriel,
your patience. Each subcategory has something called a "General"
subcategory. For example, Genres: Adventure: General. This is for
stories that aren't in a more specialized category (like Genres:
Adventure: Minas Tirith). There should be about the same number of
stories in the General subcategory as any other subcategory.
The problem is, as far as the website's concerned, there is no General
subcategory. There's just a bunch of stories in a main category without
a more specialized subcategory. It's hard to explain and I won't bore
you with all of the technical details, but this situation means that the
check ballots didn't display this General subcategory correctly. Aranel
Took has now fixed that, so when the next check ballot is posted, they
should display as a subcategory.
