Admin - First Age Stories Posted by melayton@gmail.com June 29, 2008 - 1:49:42 Topic ID# 9053Hey guys,
For the duration of the awards, my weekly messages will alternate
between informational emails like I have been doing, and emails that
spotlight certain types of stories. This is to help expose you to the
stories participating in this year's awards.
To find out more about these stories, you should visit our voting
website, www.mefawards.net/MEFA2008/ . Perhaps the easiest way to look
up an individual story is to do a search for the story ID#. To do this....
1. Log in to www.mefawards.net/MEFA2008/
2. Click the "Stories" link at the top of the page.
3. Scroll down to the grey bar, where you will see a search field (a
white box you can type into, followed by a "Search" button.) Click
inside this field.
4. Type in the story ID number followed by the pound sign - for
instance, searching for "255#" will bring up story #255 - "Rekindling"
by Dawn Felagund.
5. Click "search."
You can also pull up all of these stories by selecting "Times: First Age
and Prior" from the "Genre, Race, Time" filter.
Before we get started, some of you may wonder what I mean when I say the
author selected the "Times: First Age and Prior" category. This isn't
the same as saying they'll compete in that category. Every author picks
three main categories they would like their story to compete in, and
volunteers subsequently choose one of those main categories to actually
place the piece in. The stories listed below are the ones where one of
those category choices was "Times: First Age and Prior." That means the
author was okay with the story competing against other First Age
stories, so you can be sure these all have something to do with the
First Age.
Now on to some stories.
With so many stories nominated it's impossible to present them all in
detail. Here are five First Age and Prior stories chosen at random, to
give you a sampling.
#084. "In absntia" by Robinka
SUMMARY: Rescued from Thangorodrim, Maedhros slowly succumbed to pain. A
short take on what might have transpired between him and Fingon when
suffering finally brought Maedhros on the verge of breaking.
#321. "A Smile" by Aria
SUMMARY: "Yet neither bread nor rest would [Orodreth] grant to Celegorm
and Curufin within his realm, and he swore that there would be little
love between Nargothrond and the Sons of Fëanor thereafter. Let it be
so!' Said Celegorm, and there was a light of menace in his eyes; but
Curufin smiled [...] In that time Celebrimbor the son of Curufin
repudiated the deeds of his father, and remained in Nargothrond." A
study of a father and son, with a momentous decision. An attempt to
understand why Curufin smiled.
#352. "The Work of Small Hands" by Dawn Felagund
SUMMARY: Valinor has been plunged into darkness, most of the Noldor have
gone into exile, and the Teleri grieve for those lost in the kinslaying.
The Valar have turned their backs on the remaining Noldor--left without
a king--and chaos rules the streets of Tirion. Can Eärwen, the quiet
wife of a third-born prince, find the courage and strength to save her
husband's people?
#432. "Love at First Sight" by Gwynnyd
SUMMARY: With such a strong personality, love comes early and strong. (
#658. "If I Had One Wish" by Ellie
SUMMARY: Indis reveals her greatest wish.
These are just a few of the nominations that selected the "Times: First
Age and Prior" stories (which should represent at least most of the
pieces set in that time period). I'll now list all of these nominations,
just authors and titles to save on space. If you recognize one, why not
go ahead and enter a review for it? And while you're at the site check
out another piece from this time period to see if you might want to read
it, or if you don't have time add it to your wish list.

Now for the standard disclaimer: this list of stories was compiled by
yours truly. By hand. Unlike the pope, I am not infallible. :-) If you
were mistakenly left off this list, it's just that (a mistake); and if I
got your story's ID # wrong, I apologize in advance for that, too.
'Twasn't intentional, by any means.
Some of these pieces are WIPs. Some are FLFs (fixed-length ficlets -
drabbles and drabble variants, like double drabbles and drabble series),
and others are full-fledged novels Some are rated teen or mature for
some combination of violence, erotic content, themes, and other content
that may be inappropriate for youngsters. Before you read a story, check
out its story type, rating, reason for rating, romance partner, and
other information to see if it's something you might like.
For full information about these stories free of any mistakes I might
have introduced, please check out our website. If you need help with
your password, email mefasupport(.at.)mefawards(.dot.)net; if you have
general questions on how to find stories at the website, read the FAQs
or post here for help, and someone will gladly address your question.
Happy reading!

My story "The Craft of the Elven Smith" was left off the list, but then
it was multi-age, ranging from the First to the end of the Third Age.
Am glad I've read at least SOME of these!

Re: Admin - First Age Stories Posted by melayton@gmail.com June 29, 2008 - 11:03:33 Topic ID# 9053Hi Bonnie,
I hope you find the list helpful! It was actually a lot of fun to dig
through the stories.
The reason your story wasn't on the list was that you had selected
"Times: Multi-Age" as your category choice. Which was absolutely the
right thing to do, because it communicated the fact that your story
isn't *just* set in the First Age; however, because I was using the
filter that relies on category choice selection to generate a quick and
dirty list, it didn't show up. Neither would anyuone else's that was set
in the First Age and some other age, and who selected "Times: Multi-Age."
I could perhaps have come up with my list in another way (stories set in
First Age locations, or involving First Age characters, for instance),
but that would have left off people who didn't select characters or
settings. There's not always a good way to pick up *every* story that is
set in a certain time period. I am sorry for anyone who got left off,
though!
Anyway, I'm glad you mentioned your story because I want other people
who are interested in First Age stories to know of all the stories
available to them. Or at least as many as I can list. :-)
