Hello!
Uhm, here you have a less experienced MEFA member, so I have to ask: what is a wish list and what is this wish option that is now visible in column next to the stories? *blush*
Bye,
Ellynn
P.S. Happy New year everyone!

Ellyn,
the wish function should have been there all the time, unless there was a technical problem. It's a function that allows you to compile a reading list, if you see a story that you think you'd like to read/review but haven't got time at the moment. You can then, when you browse stories, use the filter and bring up your wish list.

It's been an impressive event indeed, and kudos to all who dealt with the admin side of it!
I'd wanted to read almost all of the short stories--I'm sorry, but there are a
couple genres I just don't feel comfortable reading and reviewing, and a lot
that fell in those genres I did skip. There were a couple I didn't get to that
I'd wanted to read, and I apologize.
I simply couldn't read all the longer tales--didn't have time! I tried to read
a good representative sampling of most writers' works, though.
I'm just glad I was spacing things out throughout the season--otherwise I doubt
I would have read a good deal I did read. And I love the MEFAs for introducing
me to the works of those who don't frequent the archives where I post. I found
some amazing authors whose works I'd not read before.

Then something might be wrong with my browser and the way it displays things, for I really don't remember seeing it. *confused*
But it made no difference, after all. :) I made my list "manually", that is, I made notes with stories and page numbers where they were. ;)

Hey guys,
I wanted to thank all the MEFA reviewers and other volunteers. It was
amazing to see all the reviews. And as someone who has worked behind the
scenes, I know that there are several volunteers still working hard -
thank you for all your hard work.
I noticed a few people saying they ran out of time. That always seems to
happen, unfortunately... there's never enough time to do as much
reviewing as you'd like. (I know I, too, left many stories unread.) I
did want to make a suggestion, though. If you found stories you wanted
to read but didn't get to them by the deadline, well, the MEFAs is over
but fandom goes on. All of these stories are hosted at some website
other than the MEFAs. Right now those links are still available through
the MEFA voting website (http://www.mefawards.net/MEFA2009/), and when
next year starts the links will be available at the MEFA archive
(http://www.mefawards.net/mefa-archive/). So if you found a new author
you like or a story you wanted to read but didn't get to, why not go
ahead and read that story, and leave the author a review at the archive?
Speaking purely as a private author, I know I'd appreciate any nice
feedback, whether it's part of an awards contest or not.
If you want to "help" the awards... first, I'd say, no guilt allowed!
Even if you only reviewed a single story, that would be a benefit to the
author and to the MEFAs. But if you feel driven to get involved,
MEFA-wise, I'd say there's still stuff you can do. If you know anyone
involved in the MEFAs, anyone mentioned at
http://www.mefawards.net/MEFA2009/index.php?page=FAQvolunteers, why not
send them an "attaboy" to encourage them for all their hard work? The
results will be announced soon, and you can talk them up when they are,
and congratulate the winners. And it's not too early to start thinking
about next year. You'll have twenty nominations you can make in a few
months, so you might want to think about what you'd most like to
nominate. It's really not too early to be thinking in that direction,
because as veteran nominators will tell you, getting it down to twenty
stories can be quite a hard decision! :^)
I say all this in a 100% non-official capacity. As Tanaqui mentioned
last night I've been much less active the last few months. I thought I'd
just offer some friendly advice to anyone who wanted it, based on the
emails I saw last night.
Thanks again to all the reviewers, especially those of you who took the
time to review my stories, and to the volunteers of all capacities who
made this happen. *passes around miruvor*

I set myself a Junkie goal and didn't make it this year, but I did at least review a few of the longer stories. Got out of the gate fast, but faded in the backstretch (what can I say, I'm from Kentucky, horse-racing metaphors come naturally!).
Kudos to the admins and volunteers! The event and the site run like a well-oiled machine.

Well, I thoroughly bombed when it came to pacing myself as a reviewer this year, but at least I got a few last reviews crammed in there in the final minute.
Three cheers for the MEFA volunteers - you ladies and gentlemen make fandom fun!

I was amazed first at the number of reviews I managed to get done (20% of
all stories, 132 pieces) and the number of reviews I received! Whether I win
anything or not, the sheer amount of feedback I've gotten has been such a
boost I've been dancing in my chair since I opened my email this morning.
Big public thanks to everyone that took the time to review this year; that's
what makes the awards so rewarding for those of us who toss prosaic hats in
the ring every year.

Thanks to all who put the hard work into the awards. I made my official
reviewing goal, but I was not able by far to review everything on my
wishlist.
The random story selector was my life saver this year. When I was too tired
to make a decision what to read, someone made the decision for me, and I
could just start. Long story or short did not make much difference for me as
I rarely had a longer chunk of time to read. I just started on whatever
story was suggested, and it took as long to read as it took.

::popping in to add her own thanks::
I absolutely love these awards! I love meeting new people, finding new stories, discovering new and brilliant authors, etc. My summer was a bit of a catastrophe, and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to participate in reviewing this year. I didn't even get around to setting a review goal before it was too late. But life resolved itself toward the end of September and I was able to jump in for the last three months. And I am SO glad I did. Thank you one and all for your writing and thank you volunteers for making this one of the most efficient awards I've ever seen!

Thanks. I've not done as Dreamflower did one year and read and reviewed every
single story, but I hope that I managed to read and review at least one story by
every single author represented. Thanks to all of you for providing such
delightful reading!

I continue to be amazed at the smoothness and efficiency of the MEFA operation; and it certainly wouldn't be possible without the hardworking administrators, liaisons, banner-makers, etc.
I think my Review Junkie goal was 250. My personal goal was 300 reviews; I ended up writing 364; which is a personal best for me.
There are at least two other MEFAns who reviewed a lot more than that (I don't know how!).
I'm very pleased to observe that MEFA participation is up from last year - the 2008 Awards netted 5397 reviews; this year we had 5824; which reassures me that Tolkien fanfiction, at least this corner of it, is thriving. The number of stories in the competition was up this year from last as well.

I don't know how you manage it, Bonnie - 625 reviews this year! I started to run out of steam at 350, but managed another fourteen.

Hello Everyone,
please let me add my thanks for the creators and volunteers, as well as the authors and reviewers of the MEFAs, as well. I think it is an incredibly well-organized, positive event and you should be proud of yourselves!
I feel bad that I haven't been able to participate much (I barely found the time or inspiration to write or read anything fan-fiction related this past year), but I hope this will change again in the future.
For now I wish everyone a wonderful and creatively fulfilling happy New Year!

*joins the chorus* Thank you so much to all the hard-working people behind the MEFA scenesm the admins and volunteers who made everything run so smoothly; and wow! to the dedicated reviewers who managed to read hundreds of stories.
As a newbie, I'm incredibly impressed. It's been great fun to participate. :-)
(However, I'm disappointed with myself for not managing more reviews; a lot of stories sits unread and unreviewed on my wish list. But next year!)

Hi there. Erm, how does one see how many reviews one gave? I'm pretty sure I gave quite a few - at least fifty... though I'm pretty sure it was more than that.
Hi!
"Reading Reviews" section (it's quite a long way down the page). That
defaults to showing you all the reviews you wrote yourself, and will
show you the number you wrote above the filter and at the top of the
listing.

Wendy, at the bottom of the MEFA home page there is a function "Read reviews by reviewer" which when you click it defaults to the reviews you have written and gives you the number. If you've set yourself a review target earlier, the number of your reviews should also be displayed in the top section of the home page. Strangely, in my case, the numbers don't match.
HI Lissa,
Don't be disappointed with yourself. I participate for years in the Mefas,
and I have yet to manage to read all the stories on my wish list. Every year
I start out with great enthusiasm only to have RL intrude and cut my reading
time short. I resign myself to use the wishlist to wittle down the number of
stories to read, and then I read what I can when I can. If it is more the
better, but at least I review a few stories every year.

Have all the reviews been tallied and posted? I'm a bit confuzzled on this.

Hi Elvish Writer
All the "scoring" reviews left for each story are now visible at the
voting website, and are being posted in batches by annmarwalk at the
mefas LJ.
The final results and winners in each subcategory will be available on
the voting website and announced here just after midnight GMT on 4 January.
We need a couple of days to check that everything is as it should be,
and to send individual emails to each of the winning authors (these will
be going out over the next day or so) before we release the results here
and at the website.
Hope that lessens the confuzzlement.

Let this newbie say a few more words. :) No, I am not new to fanfiction, but this year is the first time that I participated actively in MEFAwards. What I really like about MEFA and fanfiction - apart from reading beautiful stories, laughing and crying with all those wonderful characters in stories - is that I am able to find new friends all over the world. We may be thousands of kilometers apart, but there are some of you that I feel like we are really close. *hugs* The bonds between many of us are real and strong, and there are some of you that I can call friends.
Unfortunately, RL is merciless and day lasts only 24 hours, so there is no time to get to know all of you; as Bilbo says - "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like." :(
Ok, I'll make my speech "nice and short" (another LotR quote :) ), so I'll finish it. Thank you for making this year so special - all the authors, reviewers, and of course, big thanks for all those who made all this possible - admins and volunteers. Big hug for everyone! :)
Bye,
Ellynn

Can I just say that I totally agree with Ellynn. A fellow newby to the MEFAs, and fairly new to this particular fandom, I have so enjoyed participating, and am full of admiration for the wonderful organisational skills of all those involved in making the MEFAs work.

Thanks! It's good to hear I'm not the only one, and you're right: a little reviewing must be better than none at all. :)

This too was my first year participating and probably will be my last. Unlike Ellin I experienced none of the joys she had with this. Instead all I got back was silence unless I asked a question to which I will say thank you to those of you who had responded to them. I'm also appreciative of the two wonderful souls who took the time to read and give my story a review even though I have yet to complete it.
As for my reviewing of other stories I decided it wasn't worth the time towards the end. It's hard to participate in something when you feel it only leaves you farther behind the others.

All winning authors have been notified individually by email as to which
of their stories won first, second or third place or an honorable
mention. The last of those emails went out about 12 hours ago, and the
posts people are making at LJ are based on those emails.
The reviews will be publicly available to everyone at the voting website
from midnight GMT tonight, and will also be posted here and at the mefas
LJ soon after.
Hope that clears up any confusion about where people are getting their
information from.

Again, this by no means represents all of the good stories. Some
sub-categories involved intense competition, and there are some very
worthwhile entries not listed here. If you have the time, I encourage
everyone to continue looking at any of this year's nominations that you
didn't get to. You can still leave the author a review wherever the
story is postedI'm sure they'll appreciate it.
And thank you again to everyone for your participation this year - I
think the 2009 awards were a great success, and it wouldn't have been
without everyone contributing so much in so many different ways!
Here's to 2010!

I noticed that one of my stories did get an honorable mention but I never received an email about it. Are emails only sent out if a story is first, second, or third? My email addy hasn't changed. Just curious.

I was one of the volunteers that helped send the emails and yours was one that I sent. I checked to make sure I really sent it and to the same email as you have in the voting site (i.e. the correct email without typos etc). I did. I sent it to an email at bellsouth.net. Check that one and check the spam filter. The subject line MEFA 2009 Award results. elliska

As Elliska has confirmed, we did send out an email to the address you
have listed at the voting website (which I notice is the same one you
use to subscribe to MEFAwards).
It may be that your email provider is one of those that deletes some
emails as spam even before they reach your spam folder. (We've had this
problem a few times in the past!)
If you still can't find the email in your spam folder, and you have
another email address, please could you send it to us at mefasupport at
mefawards dot net, and I'll send your email again to the new address to
see if that's more successful.

ADMIN: Banners and banner customization - requests must be made befo Posted by Tanaqui January 04, 2010 - 5:58:45 Topic ID# 10323Hi All
As some winning authors have had trouble receiving the email
notifications we sent, I wanted to repeat the information in the email
about award banners.
This year, we have two kinds of banners:
1) We have a set of pre-made banners for each place (First, Second,
Third and Honorable Mention) in each subcategory (such as Times: Post
Ring War and Beyond: General). You can find these banners at our
photobucket account at http://www.photobucket.com/mefa09w, password:
aelfwine. You can use these immediately, either by linking directly to
the banner at the MEFA photobucket or by downloading the banner and then
uploading it to your usual image hosting site. Use the [cat] tags listed
down the left hand side of the page to help you find the banners for
each subcategory.
2) We also have general winners banners that have space to be customized
with the place and subcategory for your story. Use the character [ch],
format [fm], miscellaneous [ms], place [pl], race [rc] and times [tp]
tags to find banners that suit your story, or browse all of a particular
artist's banners by using the [ar] tag.
Authors may download and customize banners themselves (or ask a friend
to do so!) or may ask one of the volunteers who've kindly agreed to help
to customize it for them. To make a request to have a banner customized,
please go to the post at the mefas lj at
http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/174466.html and follow the
directions in the post. Please follow the directions *exactly*, in order
to make the task as easy as possible for our customizers, who are very
generously providing their time to help with this part of the awards.
Some of our artists are also willing to customize the nomination banners
they made to turn them into winners banners - see the post at the mefas
lj for details of which artists are making this offer and where you can
find their banners.
Please note that we only guarantee to fulfil banner customization
requests made *before 20 January*.
Have fun choosing your banners from the very lovely choice we have this
year!

Elvish Writer -
I'm sorry you had a bad experience with MEFAs and I'm sure that once in awhile people do have problems or feel lost in the whole process of this contest. As someone who has participated for the last four years, I can say that this contest has grown into a well-oiled machine as far as how well it operates. But no group is perfect of course. I'm sure that no one meant to make you feel left out or that you were 'farther behind the others'. Everyone I've dealt with seems to try really hard to make this contest fun and run smoothly. If you had a different experience than others, I would say that it was definately a rarity rather than the norm. Maybe you should give it another chance next year before making your decision to never participate again.

We may be thousands of kilometers apart, but there are some of you that I feel like we are really close. *hugs* The bonds between many of us are real and strong, and there are some of you that I can call friends.

Funds Drive
Hey guys,
It's that time again....
For the most part, the MEFAs don't cost anything but time. The website
was designed and coded by volunteers and is run ad-free; the competition
itself is run by volunteers. There is no cash reward for the winners, no
monetary compensation even for the most active volunteers. It's a labor
of love.
Which is precisely why we hate asking for donations. However, the
company that hosts our website takes a slightly more capitalistic view
of things. So we occasionally ask our members to chip in towards our
site costs. Therefore, you can donate through paypal. There's a donation
button at:
http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/191455.html
(You don't need a LJ account to donate; the donation is handled through
PayPal; it''s just a good place to put the button.)
This is completely voluntary. If you can't or don't want to give money,
you can still participate. With the economic downturn affecting most of
us in some way, no one is going begrudge anyone not spending money on
fannish things. If you want to contribute to the awards in other ways,
we will always be able to find a use for your time.
Second, whatever you contribute will go to our hosting fees and nothing
else. (Marta controls the account, but she assures us she doesn't have a
secret Amazon slush fund, and she's certainly not handing it out to the
rest of us volunteers!) Every dollar, euro, pound or other currency you
send goes on keeping the voting website online. The more that is
donated, the longer it will be before we're back here with our hands out.
Oh, and in the past people have wanted to donate without doing so
online. (Yes, some people don't have credit or debit cards which is
smart!) For these people, in the past, Marta has let them mail her
checks, which she has deposited into her personal account, and then made
a corresponding donation to the paypal account. If you'd like to do
this, email us privately (mefasupport at mefawards dot net) and we'll
give you Marta's current mailing address (with her permission, of
course!). If you've sent a check in the past, please don't use any
previous address Marta may have provided, as it's likely it's no longer
being forwarded to her, but email us for the current address.
Thanks again to everyone for all your support of the MEFAs, however you
give it.

ADMIN: Suggestions for 2010 Awards Posted by Tanaqui January 05, 2010 - 6:35:02 Topic ID# 10326Hey guys,
Every year we have welcomed suggestions from all MEFA members about ways
that we can improve the awards in future years. As we did last year, we
would like anyone who has a suggestion for the 2010 MEFAs to please
email it to mefasupport at gmail dot com with the subject 2009 Post-Mortem.
It will be discussed (at a bare minimum!) among the most active
volunteers - Marta, Inkling, Radbooks, elliska, and the tech support
team. If we think more input would help us make a better decision, we'll
talk to those members most affected by the suggestion - by emailing the
volunteers involved in a certain portion of the awards, for instance, or
by posting an opinion poll that anyone can participate in. (As in the
past, these polls would be for our information only, to help us see what
the majority wants; we will consider the majority opinion but weigh it
against other factors as well.)
Once all the suggestions have been considered, we will post here about
the changes that will be made for the 2010 awards. That way, everyone
will know what was decided upon.
One other thing: our tech support volunteers are currently working on a
major technical refresh of the voting website which should make it
easier to for everyone to use: nominators, authors, voters and
volunteers. It will also give us a much more solid base to carry on with
the awards: the current code does the job well, but it's starting to get
rather creaky behind the scenes. If all goes well with the
redevelopment, we'll unveil the new site for the opening of nominations
for the 2010 awards.
Because we need to make sure the new site still does all the things the
old site does, and does them correctly, we need to be very careful about
accepting any suggestions that involve new features that change how the
website works. There's still a lot of areas that we can make changes to
that won't affect the redevelopment, though. And we'll still take bug
reports, of course; just please don't ask for new features.
If you have any suggestions, please send them to mefasupport at gmail
dot com. Because we need to plan for next year, please email your
suggestions to us by January 20 at the latest.
Thanks,
Tanaqui

Re: ADMIN: Suggestions for 2010 Awards Posted by Ainaechoiriel January 05, 2010 - 14:25:52 Topic ID# 10326May I make a suggestion? Please post reviews to the group as well as the
Live Journal. Personally, I loathe Live Journal, but I know others don't.
As I understand it, the posts get popped downward as a new post goes up,
like any blog. So things get lost. I don't go to Live Journal so I never
see those reviews. And yes, I've been very much a not-even-a-good-lurker
these last few years after founding and admining the MEFAs in the beginning.
But I do poke my head into the MEFAwards folder in my Outlook now and then,
where all the posts to this YahooGroup go. If I were to see reviews there
when I do, they just might entice me to read a story. This would be best if
reviews (finished and final) were posted during the reviewing time so that
if I do get enticed, I'll have time to read and review for the awards as
well.
As the MEFAs were basically copied from the alt.startrek.creative Awards FAQ
with certain necessary alterations, I will say that's one of the many great
things about the ASC awards (which are in danger of not being held this year
for lack of stories-so if you know someone who writes Trek fanfic, please
send them to that newsgroup to post this month!). I'll see the review posts
for TNG stories (which I generally don't bother to read) and maybe see one
that gets me. Then I'll read things I never planned to read.
And please, post the Winners list to the YahooGroup as well. No extra work
is needed to find them, which with real life and other stuff going on, it's
hard to do "other work". But since Outlook is open, I need only click this
folder and see what's new. If the winners have been notified then the list
is official, so please post it. That list also may entice me or others to
read some stories.

Re: ADMIN: 2009 MEFA Final Results Posted by BLJean@aol.com January 06, 2010 - 11:26:04 Topic ID# 10318Congratulations to all who participated, both authors and reviewers, as well as heartfelt thanks and congratulations to the behind-the-scenes folks who made the awards happen, for making them happen!
I'm very thankful for the encouragement, myself, as it has been an incredibly busy year and I've had very little time for writing. We are a homeschooling family, and this was our first year to tackle high school subjects. Whew. It's a whole new ballgame.
I wish I'd had some time to read and review for this year (I didn't even set a goal, but I was hoping...), but I'm glad the stories are still up. I had a wishlist started, of stories that caught my eye, but am not sure if it's still accessible, or how to access it, if it is? Is it still possible to review stories at the MEFA site, or do we write reviews at the sites where stories are posted? (Assuming that I get some reading time, sometime...)
I intend to go through and answer each review I got, but until then, please know that I am grateful and much encouraged.
Sincerely,
Lindelea

You can access it by going to the Browse Stories page, clicking on the

It's no longer possible to enter reviews at the voting website -- but of
course you can leave reviews at the sites where the stories are posted,

I know I need to use the LJ site to post the info for a banner, but I have a question first. Last year, I was able to have 2 pictures custp, ozed into banners that were not part of anything any of the volunteers had made, but my own pics. Can I request the same be done again this year?

Hi Cathleen,
Supplying your own images shouldn't be an issue at all. If you don't feel
comfortable using the LJ post to request your banners, or if this isn't in
accordance with the rules this year for some reason, feel free to write me
privately at this email with the necessary info, and I'll be getting back to
you. Congratulations on your placings, by the way!
(The same goes for others who would like to request other banners than the
premade ones, it wouldn't be a problem for me to handle some requests.)

Just so the authors whose banners I haven't customized yet know... will try

Hey guys,
A few weeks ago Tanaqui announced that we would be having a fund-raising
drive to pay costs connected with our website. These donations don't go
to award winners or to volunteers, but instead only pay the hosting
costs associated with running the MEFA website. Many of you have very
generously donated to the awards. Thank you! We now have a balance of
$226.89. That is enough to pay our site hosting fees for at least the
next year, and a good portion of the next year as well.
You may donate funds to the MEFAs anytime. Whether or not you can
contribute financially, we still value any time you share as a volunteer
or participant.
Thanks again for your generosity, guys, both in donating your money and
your time - it is much appreciated.
At your service,
Marta

[[ P.S. - If you wanted to donate, but didn't get a chance to yet, you
can still do so at http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/191455.html
While we have enough funds to keep the site going for some time, your
donations are always welcome, and will postpone the need for future fund
drives like this. ]]

Icon in the address bar & tab & favorites list Posted by Ellin Ithilwen January 18, 2010 - 12:07:52 Topic ID# 10342Hello everyone!
I've noticed that MEFA site does not have the small icon which can stand as a "logo" of the site. Now, I don't know how complicated it is for a system administrator to make a program for that, but I made 3 icons (for now) that might be used as our logo. They are in the attachment, as well as the "screen shot" of how the MEFA site would look if we had a logo.
If you decide it would be nice to have an icon, but you want me to change something (colour of letters, background, or make something new), just say it. :) Changing colours is simple. Btw, the lightblue colour on the first icon is the same as the background of the upper part of the homepage. ;)
Bye,
Ellynn

Just an observer with no input ;p, but wanted to say that as someone who works with graphics a LOT number 2 is especially appealing.
Not sure if this is the case on your attachments this time for this group, but I do know that with Yahoo groups in general, the owner/moderators have to set the group to accept attachments, and if they are not set that way Yahoo groups automatically strips them from the e-mails.

Thanks for the suggestion that we add a favicon for the site, and the
graphics you linked. We'll consider that as part of the 2009 post-mortem.
The MEFAwards Yahoo group is set to strip attachments from emails both
as a security measure (it prevents viruses being spread) and as a
courtesy to those members with low-bandwidth connections who may not
wish to receive unsolicited large files by email. I hope that clears up
the confusion.

BTW, I just realised that I had forgotten to change my email in my profile to my new one. I made the change today and wonder if I missed a notification of any sort since the announcement of the winners.
Many thanks,

Re: Question about certain awards Posted by Marta January 19, 2010 - 10:28:42 Topic ID# 10347Hi Dancingkatz,
You and Rhyselle are sisters? How neat, to have a fellow fanfic writer in
the same house.
Anyway... many moons ago, the different awards given - first place, second
place, and third place - had themed banners, and themed names to go with
them. For instance in the Drama main category, all first place stories
received the "Turin Turambar Award" - and got a banner featuring Turin. All
second place stories received the "Frodo Baggins Award," and all third-place
stories received the "Faramir, Son of Denethor Award." The thinking was that
these were three characters in Tolkien's works whose stories were
particularly dramatic.
We've since moved away from themed banners. This is because most people like
banners that reflect the contents of their story. Someone who wrote a
Legolas-and-Gimli story, that won a prize in the Drama category, could have
received the Frodo Baggins award, and a Frodo-themed banner to go along with
it. That might be a bit inappropriate. So instead we let artists create a
pool of banners featuring as many characters and settings as possible, and
winning authors can select whatever banner they like.
Because of that change we don't often refer to the names of specific awards
any more. "Second place in Genres: Drama: General" is simply easier to
understand than "the Frodo Baggins Award," in many contexts.
Hope that explains the award name. :-)
P.S. - Out of curiosity, where did your sister see that name? I wasn't aware
that the website still displayed it.
