N1: Aglarrama by Zimraphel

This gave me a bit of a shiver, knowing what lies ahead for Númenor,
and for the ordinary people like the shipwright, who don't really know
the state of affairs. They just wish to live their lives, tend to
their crafts and their families, and be left more or less at peace.
There's a real life parallel in there somewhere, I'm thinking... In
any case, I enjoyed this glimpse into the last days of Númenor.


N3: Confessions of a Queen Downfallen by Jen Littlebottom

Disturbing, and yet very plausible. I found it interesting that the
author did not take the easy way out and make Miriel the wholly
unwilling victim, but that she found some fault in her own surrender
to Pharazon. We know so little of Miriel, and yet it seems very likely
she might have gone mad eventually, or at least played it,
Hamlet-like, but to an even more fruitless end, perhaps, than our
favorite Danish prince.

But if I'd tried, I wouldn't have gotten it posted in time. As it was I
found a Humor ballot waiting to be sent (in that hopes that I'd read that
one last story I wanted to) and barely got it sent when the clock said 12:00
on the dot.

Whew! That was fun.

I read and I read and I read, and I still didn't get to half my list.
Numenor, Hobbits, and Romance had a lot of stories on it that I just
didn't manage to read at all; I couldn't even get to "The Hobbit" or
Mystery or Horror, and the list of fics on my Amnesty list was never
touched. Long stories were out of luck most of the time unless I'd
already read them.

Nevertheless, I did read quite a few new fics for which I am grateful.

Thanks for organizing this, Ainae. Thanks to all the other
foolish--er, generous souls who have been vote-counters and
moderators, and thank you very much to all who commented on any of my
stories. I'm afraid any personal notes of thanks will have to wait
either until Christmas.

Quite a rush there at the end, huh?

Well, we'll count any votes that were posted between Oct.1st and
12:00 Nov. 1st. If a time-stamp on the vote shows 12:01, well, that's
just missed it. But that was fun at the end. We got quite a slew of
votes, and needless to say, I'm behind in my counting. I was trying
to read! Heck, I got behind in everything. I even forgot to pay my
cell phone bill. Ooops.

I'll take care of that tomorrow.

And I'll catch up with the counting tomorrow. As for needing more
counters, well, we may not. Let me get a head count from the Staff
group and see how we stand. I'll send out a call for help here if we
need more counters. Most of the regular counters have volunteered to
count the Amnesty Day votes as well.

And before I go to bed tonight, I'll post the polls for the banner
FanArt contest! I hope. What is 16 x 3 anyway? It may take me
awhile. ;-)

Thanks for all your participate, even you lurkers! We'll do our best
to have the results out by Nov. 15th, and then we'll begin a Post
Mortem where we discuss what worked, what didn't, and what we may
want to do differently next year.

I know that feeling. Just looking over the list of Elves nominees...
well, I now know several stories I will be reading in the near future.
But time is a limited commodity... :-/

What she said. I have discovered many new writers, especially in the
hobbit corner of the fandom - despite my interest in that race, I
hadn't touched the wealth available, and SilverMoonLady and Lindelea
are both on my list to investigate in the future - as are several by
JoDancingTree that I didn't even know she had written.

I'm also very thankful, as an author, for the many people who have
commented. Several people have read and apparently liked my stories,
who I had never talked to before. ThunderaTiger, your name jumps to
mind, and I'm glad we've gotten to know each other a bit better. But
there are many others.

If I haven't thanked you yet and you commented on my things, I will.
Soon. I really do appreciate all the comments.

Hear, hear! (Hear what?) Ainae, I have several suggestions (it's the
beta reader in me), and will share them when you're ready to do a post
mortem, but I think the awards have been very successful for a first
year. Thank you for all your hard work, and I'm only sorry RL forced
me to cut back on the amount of helping out I could do.

1) The URL has a space in it that shouldn't be there. I can't edit
it though without losing the votes we already have and it wouldn't
stick anyway. Yahoo is putting it in.

All banner URLs begin with:

2) Watch the numbers. Some of them got switched around by Yahoo.

3) I put in one too many for the Bilbo Baggins award. There are only
3 banners so please do not vote for Bilbo Baggings #4

As you can see, each story has three counters and we will make sure that all
three counts match. So, if there is a discrepancy, the counters post a
breakdown, and we try to find where the discrepancy is. Then we correct

Hi all,
I went through the voting for the banners.

I saw many, many different designs for the banners.

I tried to choose for each category
banners which show per category a common design.
That was often not possible.

Though I did not make one single banner
(I thank all the artists for their work !)
I would like to propose for next time
to pre-set standards for all banners.
It looks now more like a hotchpotch of very different styles.
Often there is even in one category not one set of three banners
in a common design to be found.

I think, it would make a better impression
if MEFAwards had a common design framework
for all the different banners as to facilitate the
recognition of MEFAwards and the various placements.

And these standards should be polled IMO:
0) a standard for height times width
1) character-type of script
2) arrangement of picture with respect to frames
3) arrangement of script with respect to picture
4) arrangement of MEFAwards, year, category, name of the award, place
5) use of a different frame colour for first, second and third place
but in the same order for all categories
6) or when place is stated one distinct colour per category

OK, the standard height x width is for me paramount.

For me also the citation of the category is very important.
I for instance do not know what the "Shadow of Cuivienen" is
and that this has anything to do with Mystery.

Also now for non-expert readers nothing reveals
that "Cuivienen" is first place
and "barrow weights" is third place.
Therefore, I would prefer that a certain frame colour
assigns the placement and/or
that the placement is stated on the banner.

Frames I feel to be important as it is very difficult
to place the script in a standard set pattern
on very different pictures.

With a common set of rules
very different artists could deliver a more
congruent set of banners.

The banners will appear probably at various websites
and there in the alien surrounding it should also
become clear what the banner represents.
In this case not even a certain colour frame
transports enough information to tell the
visitor that the story achieved the third place in
the MEFAwards mystery category 2004.

I write this now before the analysis
announced to take place after all the polls
because I have just seen the problems
and they still crowd my mind.

If you think it would help clarify things, I would be
willing to take whichever banners win, open them in
Photoshop, and add a narrow bar at the bottom, saying
which place and category (or subcategory) the award
represents. I don't think a simple black (or
colormatched) bar would take anything away from most
of the designs, and the extra information seems like
it would be helpful. Just let me know, Ainae, if you
want to do this.

Regarding strict limits on the banners submissions
themselves next year, I'll save my opinions for a
contest post-mortem. :)

Vote for whichever single banner you like best. If you can't do that for a
particular award, just don't vote for that one.

A definite. We tried to do this after-the-fact this year as Yahoo was
blowing them up so I'd have to shrink them again. Next year, we will have
better guidelines on size, though I don't think they will be as strick as
that. More like minimums and maximums.

No. Though 1st, 2nd, and 3rd could be stated in text.

Thus the script should fit the picture. Pictures are different. I would
want a pretty script for a picture of Eowyn as a princess. But not for a
picture as a warrior about to kill the Witch King.

But less would do so. Why? Because your suggestions would so stifle
creativity as to take all the fun right out of it. I made a LOT of those
banners. And I didn't think of myself as an artist or one who could do it
at all. But once I did, I found it was fun. I found lots of different pics
from the films. Some were brightly colored, some were dark, some were just
portraits that I put together with symbols or matched with other portraits.
And then other people posted banners that were completely different. They
had four pics of the same person. Or had really interesting shadowy text in
the background, etc. It's creativity, Elanor.

If I was more concerned with a congruent set of banners, we wouldn't have
made a contest of it at all. We would have just made one banner for each
award and said, "here you go!".

As I said about the fanfic contest, we will have a post mortem to discuss
what worked, and what didn't and what can be approved. And we can do the
same with the banners. But like I said for the fanfic contest, there are
some things for which I will not budge. These awards, for example, will
NEVER move from the comment-based voting. And I will not stifle the
creativity of the banners. I'd even like to open up to a more formal fanart
contest where people submit drawings and such (not banners) and members vote
on them (comment based or simple vote?).

We may do what Viv suggests and put a black banner underneath with the
category (if it's not already on the banner, as some of them do have that
info) and the placement. I originally didn't think that information was
completely necessary. I like the idea that someone whose interest is piqued
by the Shadows of Cuivienen Award might click on the banner and follow the
link to find out what the MEFAs are. And then they might join and
participate the next year.

Besides, what does it matter if the three banners match for the three awards
in each category unless the stories that win them are all on the same page,
let alone the same site? They will likely not appear side-by-side anywhere
but here.

It's, as far as I know, the first time for everyone as I've not seen this
done anywhere before. (They don't even do it for the Alt.StarTrek.Awards,
from which I borrowed heavily for the fanfic awards.) I just thought it
would be a fun way for some artistic folks to express themselves in these
awards. But like the fanfic awards' first priority is feedback and
competition is secondary, I see the banner contest as having a first
priority of presenting the basic information in a creative way. Matching
across categories or representing the MEFAs in any formal way is secondary.

And this is enough of this discussion for now. Any more, save it for the
post-mortem.

Well, I read and read and read, and according to my spreadsheet had
comments for more than 300 nominations! Wow. Still, I didn't get to
all I wanted, and I had to really scramble during Voting Season. What
have I learned: I need to use Reading Season better! I think I only
read a handful of Elves stories in those 2 1/2 months. I'm glad to
say I did get to a few of the long stories I wanted to, though a few
still sit on my Want-to-Read list. Thankfully, a few of those were
WIPs so I'll hopefully be getting another chance.

Me, too, and some which I wouldn't have thought I'd enjoy! I am

You're welcome, and in Alt.StarTrek.Creative circles we call them the
insufficiently reluctant. I've been insufficiently reluctant for
quite some time as I've served as the DS9 SOS Maintainer (keeps track
of DS9 stories posted each year) for more than 4 years I think, and
I've even been a vote counter once for ASC.

My thanks, too! I have marked each post with comments on my stories
and I intend to save them as I do with all my feedback (I have an
Access database! Yes, I'm a computer geek!) and reply to them
individually. I do appreciate them very much, I've just been so busy
of late, reading and trying very hard to get my comments posted by
midnight...and then preoccupied with counting and voting and watching
the election returns and then.... (e-mail me privately if you want to
know the rest of that. We won't go into politics here.)

I have been very glad with the results (of the big picture here) of
these Awards. We didn't have a huge membership starting out, but
it's the first year. We may have more next year, when good word gets
out. (hint, hint). And we had over 30 commenters, I think. I asked
the ASC-Virtual Staff Offices (We're silly over there. We have our
own offices and floor plans and daily cookies and everything. All
virtually, of course.) and they didn't have actual stats, but felt
that they had a core of voters that vote on just about every category
with a smaller number of other voters that just vote here or there,
so I think percentage-wise of voters to members, we did pretty well.
Though, of course, I hope more will put their votes in next year now
that they've seen how we do it.

On the whole, I am very happy with how these awards came out and
think they have been a success in their first year. Good luck to all
the nominees. We are still getting some of our counts in (three per
category after all) so we haven't nailed down every winner yet, but
we are definitely on schedule to do so by Nov. 15th. And remember
that our counting process is an open one. Anyone can view the
Archive of the MEFAStaff group and see our correspondences. The
three counts per category keep us accurate and protect the integrity
of the vote counting. So have no fears in that regard! And in the
end, you find you didn't receive an award, I hope you can at least
walk away happy with your comments, as almost every story got at
least one comment.

and further again only in the following
evenings when the children are in bed.

We have 164 members and still less than 20 have voted on the banner
contest. Just in case you aren't aware, the banner polls will
determine which banner goes with which award. The winners of both
the fanfic contest and the banner contest will be announced on
Monday, hopefully just after midnight.

some awards have as many as a dozen or more banners to choose from,
so hurry over to the polls section and vote on your favorites, or
else only a small handful of us will have chosen them for the whole

If we break all 16 main categories into Author and Story, we get 32.
22 of those are finished, all votes counted 3 times, all
discrepancies worked out, and all ties broken. 9 of the remaining 10
have 2 counts in. 1 has only 1 count in. We should have no probably
getting those last ten by Sunday night. If one of the original
counters assigned to a category needs help, there are a few of us
very insufficiently reluctant staffers who will pick them up,
provided we aren't one of the original three assignees. (As always,
each vote must be counted by 3 different people to ensure integrity
and accuracy.) Khazar-Khum was ill and then lost her files, and we
hardy few picked up all 6 of her categories and had them counted
before the day was done. So rest assured, we WILL announce the
winners on Monday. And then I have a surprise up my sleeve for
everyone.....

(Oh, and insufficient reluctance is a term I got from
Alt.StarTrek.Creative. Anyone who has ever been on staff there has
this quality. If you feel you have it, you may find yourself
volunteering to be staff for next year!)
