Marta: we need to change the "Send Password" message that the voting
site generates. Currently it says:
Welcome to the Middle-Earth Fanfiction Awards. Nominations and voting
are handled through the MEFA2006 website, at
<http://gabrielle.sytes.net/MEFA2006>. You may login and change your
username, nickname (penname) and password, as you desire. Remember
that these passwords are sent in the clear text over the internet, and
are visible to the MEFAwards administrators.
And the url should be: http://www.mefawards.net/MEFA2006.

Hi guys,
I'm proud to announce that the 2006 Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards are
open for nominations. To vote, please go to
http://www.mefawards.net/MEFA2006 .
Some important reminders:
1. Each member is limited to nominating twenty pieces.
2. Nominators this year provide the story URL, the story title, and
the author's name. (If the author does not already have a story
nominated, the nominator also needs to provide the author's email
address). All other information is provided by the authors.
3. The rules and several FAQs about different aspects of the awards
are available at http://www.mefawards.net/faq/ . If you have any
questions you may find this site helpful.
3. The nomination form has changed substantially, hopefully for the
better. Authors will now select a time period, genre, and race the
story is about, and rank their preference as to which category they
most want their story to take place in. This replaces the question
last year where authors were asked to give their first-, second-, and
third-choice categories.
4. Authors will be asked a series of questions about their stories and
this information will be used to form sub-categories. This replaces
the question last year where you were asked to list some potential
sub-categories.
5. Nominators may now nominate stories posted after the start of
nomination season. The only requirement is that the piece be posted at
the time you nominate it.
6. Authors may vote on other authors' pieces without being required to
join the MEFAwards group. To nominate other stories (by themselves or
other authors) they must still join the MEFAwards group. If the author
does not have a Yahoo account they can be added as an email only
member if they would like.
7. Not a change, but a reminder: make sure the piece you nominated was
not nominated before. Each piece can be nominated once as a WIP and
once again as a completed piece. 2004's nominations are available at
http://gabrielle.sytes.net/mefa/final2004noms.html; 2005's nominations
at http://gabrielle.sytes.net/MEFA2005/ . Members of the MEFAwards
Yahoo group can also find stories previously nominated in the
databases "Ineligible Complete Works" and "Ineligible Incomplete
Works" at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MEFAwards/database .
Those are the most significant changes. Please make sure you are
familiar with the pertinent rules and FAQs, and if you have any
question feel free to email mefasupport@gmail.com .

Since the Nomination season started a few days later than intended, will it
end on June 1 or June 2 or stick to the original date of (I think) May 31?
There's a story I'd love to nominate that the writer thinks will be finished
by June 1 - should I tell her to aim for May 31?

Hi,
I'm coming out of hibernation to start playing! But, although I am
able to log-in and send messages here, the 2006 site won't let me
nominate. It says I need to be a member. But I am - aren't I?

Thank you, elliska. I nearly mailed you direct and then couldn't decide if that was taking liberties. I do enjoy the MEFAs - so much to read and comment on. Now I've just got the torment of deciding who to nominate! I must already have listed more than twenty stories and I'm nowhere near thinking back all the way to last summer. Perhaps I'll just wait a bit and see who else wants to nominate them!

Hey all,
I've updated the site, and the "Fourth Age and Beyond" time period is
now in the list of times, where it should have been all along.
I had it in my list the whole time, but when I added Multi-Age, I
didn't change the '6' to a '7' on the copy, so it just overwrote
'Fourth Age and Beyond'.
So, if you have a story that should have been put in "Fourth Age and
Beyond," but it wasn't in the list, you should go edit it. If it got
finalized, and you need to change it, contact your liaison. (Liaisons,
I'm sorry if I've caused extra work!)
If you have a multi-age, it should have been properly taken care of,
but you might want to check it just in case. Nothing else should be
affected. If you were editing or nominating a multi-age around
midnight, you should check your story.

Hey all,
Reviews have temporarily been taken offline (until at least tomorrow
night) as I discovered a bug in the code.
At least one review (of the seven 'final' ones I looked at) got
truncated after just one word.
I now remember that this is what I was working on when my hard drive
died. When I went back and tested, I wasn't thorough enough. It looked
like it worked, so I thought I had finished before my backup. I was
wrong.
I apologize to those who have already entered reviews. Most of them
appear to be fine, but will need minor editing. It looks like if you
had an un-matched 'double-quote' ("), you lost everything after it,
though.
Hopefully the damage won't be too bad. There are only 23 reviews at
this stage.
At least I remember the basics of what I did to fix this problem, so
hopefully it won't be too long before I turn it back on.
Sorry again,

I fixed the problem with reviews, and have them back working again.
Anybody that entered a review should go back and check it and delete
any extra \ characters around the quote marks.
I have noticed a similar problem with the story summaries, but it
doesn't seem to be as bad, and none look like they've been cut off.
For now, be careful to save your summary in Word or a text editor. I
don't think it's going to lose any data, but it seems to be adding
multiple \ characters in front of the quote characters, especially with
multiple edits.
Do be careful about it, though. I definitely wouldn't use any < or >
characters, because those are more likely to mess it up.
I'll try to fix that one soon. It should be much like what I did for
the reviews.

Hi,
I have a fairly simple question about becoming a nominator on the
wwww.mefawards.net website. Since i'm a member here on the yahoo

not, how can i log in to become a reviewer or author? I've also
logged into the message board that has been newly set up but not sure
how to become a nominator so i can nominate stories.
Thank you~

twenty-four hours of joining this group. In case you have forgotten it or
never received it, I'll send it to you via private email.
Anyway, once you log in you should see a series of links to differnet
portions of the site. The first two let you nominate a story. Click on the
link, fill in the form, and we take it from there.

Getting in Touch With Authors Posted by aure\_enteluva May 07, 2006 - 18:05:38 Topic ID# 6972Hey guys,
Several author liaisons and authors have reported that the emails
telling them their stories have been nominated are getting caught in
their spam filter. If you think it's possible that you will be
nominated for the MEFAs please double-check your email's spam folder
before you delete it. By default, all these emails will have the
subject line "2006 Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards" (though some
liaisons may personalize this.)
I'm including a list of authors who had their first story nominated on
Friday or before, and who have not replied to those emails. Many of
them may have genuine reasons for not having responded, but if you are
this author or know how to reach them, you may want to check that
they have received their nomination emails. I realize it's still
pretty early in the nomination process, so please don't see this as a
criticism of your speed in handling this - more a pre-emptive measure
to make sure everyone is receiving these emails.
If you'd ever like to see whether your stories have been nominated you
can do this by logging in to http://www.mefawards.net/MEFA2006/ (if
you aren't a member click "login as guest"). Then click on "Browse
Nominated Stories", and then click the column header "Author". This
will sort the list of nominated stories alphabetically by the author
name. Find your name on the list and this will tell you what stories
by you have been nominated.
If you have a nominated story for which you have not received an
email, or if you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to post here or email me at mefasupport at gmail.com .

I just posted my first nomination and ran into a glitch. Is there a
possibility of editing the nomination? Here's my issue ...
The story I nominated was written by two people, neither of whom were
in your database. I went to the Multi-authored group form, pressed the
link to "New Author" and proceeded to fill in the information for the
first author. When I pressed submit, I expected to be prompted for
information about the second author, but instead I got the response
that the nomination was submitted. How do I get the second author's
name attached to the nomination? Meantime, I'll send them both email
of the glitch.

I am sending you a private email about this. I am the Author Liaison
for the story that you nominated, and I think we can get this
straightened out fairly easily. The best way will be to withdraw the
nomination you already made (I will do that part for you--you will
get the nomination added back to the 20 you are allowed) and then re-
do the nomination with the proper author group. I will explain in
more detail how to do this in my email. You should be getting my
email in a minute. :-)

Hello, here I am. I don't check my old Yahoo account very often so I
hadn't seen the email. I will fill out the nomination form thingy this
weekend.
I don't know hossgal personally, but IIRC her LiveJournal account is
under the name "leadensky" -- that may be an easier way to reach her.

I've figured out what's going on, and fixed the worst of it.
It won't get any worse, but the pink stories will stay there until I
can figure out how to remove them safely. There'll be gaps in the ID
numbers afterward.
I closed the site, then thought it was OK, and re-opened it, then
closed it again, because I wasn't sure what's going on.
The only negative effects should be that some of the story summaries
might be a bit mangled. They shouldn't be too bad, but they might have
backslashes '\' and things like & instead of '&' and > instead
of '>'. People should review them and edit any that have problems.
There are some other things, like the 'N/A' stuff below. That stuff
isn't dangerous, just annoying. I'll try to fix it this evening.
Sorry,
Anthony
Radbooks,
I changed how the 'N/A' was dealt with mid-stream, and it looks like I
screwed it up a bit. It's not supposed to do that. The checkbox at the
top is supposed to *be* N/A. It may take me a while to get it fixed,
but I will figure it out, and hopefully soon, as we're already well
into the nomination season!

I am so sorry, but the 'Fix' I did this afternoon will have caused the
loss of any stories that were edited since I made it.
That would be at about 4:16 pm EDT, or about 21:16 GMT.
I thought I had checked it this afternoon, but clearly I didn't well
enough. I was in a hurry.
For the stories that were edited this afternoon, the only thing left
will be the summary.
It will be pretty hard to determine which ones were affected, but
hopefully you guys can remember what you were doing this afternoon.
(Hopefully, you weren't using the site at all.)
I will try to work on it tonight, and I will test it thoroughly before
I bring it back online.
I will also try to see if I can figure out which stories were affected
by the problem today. It will be pretty hard, but I'll have to see if I
can use the story summaries to help me.

MEFA members,
I've identified some stories that MAY have been deleted because of my
screw-up.
Of these stories, all that remains is the summary. I've reproduced the
first 80 characters here. I have the rest, if this isn't enough.
If these are your stories (nominators or authors) we'll have to
re-enter all the data.
Again, I'm very sorry.
Unfortunately, anything that didn't already have a summary, or didn't
get a summary with today's edits will be totally lost.
ID 59: Faramir's sixth birthday is observed. Will he be given what he
wants the most?
ID 393: How Gandalf tamed Shadowfax--and vice versa.
This one I'm not sure about, because there's not a
duplicate, and most of them have duplicates.
ID 509: Something for March 25, Ring Day and Gondorian New Year, and
the anniversary of
This one also doesn't have any duplicates.
ID 476: "He smiles and leads her, tender as a lover, to the dance. \" A

ID 332: \"The Return of the Shadow\" is the sequel of both \"The Tides
of Time and the B
ID 560: "Then Mardil could no longer restrain [E?rnur], and he rode
with a small escort
Of these, I'll be able to recover (from May 7th) ID 59: Branwyn's
Birthday Kisses. It may not be complete, but that one I do have. I'm
going to find out if Bluehost does any database backups, but I don't
see anything, so I am guessing they don't.
I did an export of the site on May 7th, about 09:30 GMT, and have
stories up to ID=266 in it. I'll check those to see if any of the
'empty' IDs are that low, besides 59.
ID 257: Lindelea's The Decoy Hobbit showed up missing a title, and I
have data from the May 7 backup for that one, as well, but somehow I
didn't see it on the comparison list.
I will restore these two as best I can tonight, before I open the site
again.
The 'N/A' problem seems to be because N/A got in the list of possible
selections. I don't know if it's my fault or if someone added an N/A to
several of the input boxes. In any case, it shouldn't be a problem any
more, but I'm still testing it.
It would be a good idea to send a Special Notice with this information,
so that all can see it. Also, *everybody* should check their list of
nominations and stories. I don't think there's any way to recover this.
I know exactly what I did, and hindsight is 20-20. I picked the wrong
command to update the summary, and did a 'replace' instead of 'update'.
I think I've fixed it all, but I'll be testing more this evening, and
once I'm SURE it works, I'll open it back up.

I have tested it as well as I can think, and I believe everything is
working.
I restored as much as I could from stories 59 and 257 from May 7. I
don't think either was final at the time, so Liaisons will need to
check them. I had the authors wrong. The people I mentioned were
nominators.
The other stories, I don't have any way of getting any backups for, as
they were entered after May 7, and that is the only backup I have. I
will be getting together with Marta to discuss backups.
To the authors and nominators of the stories that were affected, I ask
great forgiveness. Hopefully, there'll be time to undo my mistakes.

Anthony, I'm the liaison for story 59, Birthday Kisses by Raksha the
Demon. After seeing your posts I went in to the check the data, then
saved it. I got the "your data has been saved successfully" message,
but now the story has vanished without a trace. Is there backup now,
I hope?

Kathy,
Did this happen just now, or earlier?
I removed all the stories with no authorID, but I thought I had put
story 59's authorID back before doing so, so I don't know what
happened.
I just replaced it from my May 7 backup, and it seems to have worked
fine. I edited a couple of times as admin, and once as you, and it is
still there.
Do keep an eye out for things like this. With all the changes, I
clearly haven't gotten everything perfect.
Thanks,
Anthony

Hey all,
I figured out how to do a daily backup of the site. I'm sorry it took
me so long, and wish I had done so before.
It will happen every day at midnight CDT (actually 11:00 Mountain Time).

Hi Anthony,
I see it now...for some reason when I saved it, it moved to the end
of Raksha's list of stories, and I thought it was gone. There are
still some weird things going on with that story, but I'll continue
this at the staff group.
thanks,
Kathy

Hi Marta,
Shall I send this as an announcement to my group? So far you had always put
Announcement into the header. This reads like an announcement, but I'm not
sure.
I tried to check the site, but it seems it is down at the moment.

Hey all,
I apologize for the recent problems with the site. They are all my
fault, and mostly due to not testing things on my own computer well
enough before putting them up to the mefawards site.
I have tested things this time as well as I can think to test them.
I've edited several stories (on my own site) and none have disappeared,
and none of the data has been corrupted.
As far as the 'N/A' problems with minor characters go (e.g., Boromir),
the data appears to have been saved correctly, but not read correctly
out of the database, so the minor characters should magically appear
again. Authors should be asked to review the lists of minor characters
(and all the other story data) just to be sure it's all there. If the
minor characters weren't re-added to the form, they would have been
overwritten with N/A, so that's one thing to check for sure.
One story I looked at has more than 4 major characters. The code isn't
supposed to allow that, and I don't know why it did, but I don't want
to change it at this stage, for fear of causing more problems. I don't
think it is a major issue, in any case.
I looked, and I do not have a backup of story 470. It wasn't there on
May 7, and was gone by May 13, when I downloaded another copy of the
database.
There may be other stories that have disappeared. I have no way of
finding out what they are, though, besides the summaries I gave you
yesterday. If you want the full summaries, let me know.
Because of the problems, and losing a big chunk of a weekend, I would
suggest adding a week to nomination season, but will let you all decide
how to deal with that.
Also, at least until nomination season is over (and especially until
I'm sure that the software isn't losing any more data), I'm going to
make backups more often (6 times a day). We'll go back to once a day
eventually, especially once reviews start coming in in bulk.

Re: Recent site issues Posted by MarigoldCotton@aol.com May 15, 2006 - 4:55:10 Topic ID# 7009I do hope that we can add a week, as Anthony suggested. (Or even two, lol!) I had scheduled this past weekend to do all of my MEFA stuff, and don't know now when I will be able to find a goodly chunk of time again. I must admit that I am finding the new system this year a bit hard to get used to anyway, and I think other folks might be as well.

I just wanted to remind everyone about replying
to posts. Please snip everything but the MOST
RELEVANT material. This is especially important
when the threads have become very lengthy!
Everyone on this list lead very busy lives - some
more busy than others - and no one has the time
to scroll through lengthy emails that repeat
things they've read in the last half a dozen
posts just in order to get to the relevant part!
It also makes reading digests a LOT easier -
anyone who is on them will attest to that fact!
I wanted to remind everyone about this as I've
noticed that a few people are forgetting some
times and these lists will only get busier as the
Awards season progresses, ESPECIALLY when the
post mortem comes around!!!

I'll continue to do that.
In case anyone is wondering, from an administrative POV it's good to keep

with subcategories when we reach that stage of the contest. I assume it also
makes the story summaries take up less room when you're looking at all the

Officially. For all those new people who don't know who in the heck I am,
I'm Ainaechoiriel, the Founder of the Middle-Earth Fanfiction Awards.
I am sorry to go like this. I had no idea when I started the 2nd annual
MEFAwards last year that I'd have such a life change that would take away
the priority of this in my life. I met my future (at the time) husband and
suddenly I was busy doing other things. Heck, I haven't updated that
infamous spreadsheet of mine in a year! Well, then I was planning a wedding
and then getting married and I just felt farther and farther away.
Two years ago, I was afraid to hand over the MEFAs to anyone else. Afraid of
how they'd change. It's not that that doesn't still matter to me, the
priority just changed so much. And I am happy that Marta seems to know that
is most important about the awards and I trust that she won't pervert them
into some Orc or anything now that I'm not around.
I've only been a ghost in holding onto the reins for these last months
anyway, so I officially let them go with this post. Marta has set up a new
site, but mine is still up as long as it's needed (at this point, that
computer is not needed for anything else) and I have given her and Anthony
ftp and remote control access to administer it as needed.
I will remain part of the group. I am slowly climbing back onto the fandom
wagon and hope to update that monster of a spreadsheet some year soon.
Mostly, I want to write. And I want to read. My life is busier now, and
since we'll be preparing to apply to adopt (and then adopting), it's only
going to get busier, but now I have a partner in my business and we'll find
a balance to this life eventually. :-)
So, you may see me around. I might even manage a vote this year (Didn't in
the ASC awards, darn it. Didn't even get around to reading one little DS9
drabble.) or, if my muse wakes up from its coma, a story.
Since I am still around, I may bark if I see something totally agregious.
But since I'm a terrible lurker even, I don't think anyone needs to worry
too much about that at this time.
I just ask that you all keep to the charter (I am pretty sure I remember
having one) and keep the most important things in the MEFAs as the most
important things.
Good luck to Marta, Anthony, Becky and the rest of the staff.
See ya around,
Ainaechoiriel

There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty forever beyond its reach.

they need. If an extra week will help, I have no objection.
Two weeks would actually work better from a scheduling point of view. We
could adjust the schedule so seasons still end at the beginning or middle of
a month. Does anyone have an objection to extending nomination season until
June 15, and moving the remaining seasons back by a similar period?

Here. Sort of. Lurking occasionally, anyhow.
And yes, it seems that AOL has blocked emails from the "official" site, or
something.
(As you hopefully know by now, Sulriel, if you got my email. Thanks for all
you've been doing.)
Will be lurking more or less (or less than less) periodically through the
first week of June, and a little more after that until July, when suddenly the
calendar looks a bit saner.
Horribly busy time, what with end-of-school-year concerts and recitals and
ceremonies and displays and such.
Wishing everyone well,
Lin

Hey guys,
We're about halfway through the nomination season, so it seemed a good
time to review the rules about what's eligible to compete in the
Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards and what's not.
The MEFAs accept all forms of fiction, both poetry and prose, as are
non-fiction. Don't forget the essays and poetry! Not many of those
have been nominated yet. If you have read a non-fiction piece you find
useful or a particularly excellent poem, you can nominate it for the
MEFAs as well.
Someone recently asked a question on this at
http://www.mefawards.net/faq/ . Poems are very eligible for the MEFAs,
but they don't all get placed in the same category. Instead, all of
the poems nominated in a certain category compete together in their
own subcategory. Meaning that if seven poems are nominated in "Elves",
then the one of those poems with the most points gets first place in
main category "Elves", sub-category "Poems". Obviously the more poems
nominated, the more we can leave in their first-choice category; if
there aren't enough nominated we may have to move some to their
second- or third-choice category.
Pieces are eligible once as an incomplete story and once as a
completed one. Please make sure your story was not previously
nominated. 2004 and 2005 nominations are available in the database
section of the MEFAwards Yahoo group, in the "Ineligible Incomplete
Works" and the "Ineligible Complete Works" databases. If you are not a
member of the Yahoo group you can also find lists of nominations at:
2005: http://gabrielle.sytes.net/MEFA2005/index.php
2004: http://gabrielle.sytes.net/mefa/final2004noms.html
Also, please double-check the list of stories that have been nominated
this year. You can find those stories by logging in to
http://www.mefawards.net/MEFA2006/ and clicking on the "Browse
Nominated Stories" link. If the story was nominated more than
twenty-four hours before you try to nominate it, that nomination will
count toward the twenty stories you're allowed to nominate.
When you nominate a story, please make sure the URL you provide is
correct. If it isn't we will have to withdraw the nomination, and it
will count toward the twenty stories you're allowed to nominate. Also,
please make sure that the URL you provide doesn't require the reader
to log in to view the story, and that if the story has more than one
part, that there is an easy way to view subsequent chapters.
Also, if the story's author has not been nominated before or is not
already a member of the website you'll need to enter an email address
where we can reach him or her. Please make sure this is correct. If we
can't reach the author the story can't compete.
Dates: All stories do need to be posted at the time you nominate them,
but besides that, there's no date the story has to be published before
or after. If your story is a WIP, it has to have been updated in the
last year (the 365-day period before you nominate it).
And one last thing. The MEFAs only accepts G-R rated stories. A piece
isn't eligible if the author thinks it's NC17. For more information on
the difference between R and NC17 please see
http://www.mefawards.net/faq/viewtopic.php?t=25
And I think that's it for reminders! If you have any questions please
reply here or email me at mefasupport@gmail.com
Thanks,
Marta

currently nominated is 17 Cunning Corsairs. There is no record in the
database of any other stories by your username ever being nominated,
so either you experienced browser problems again or this nomination
was one of the ones that got lost when we had site issues earlier this
week. Either way, go ahead and renominate it--you currently have no
self nominations using up any of your 20 allotted nominations, so you
have not lost one in your efforts. If you have trouble doing the
nomination, don't hesitate to contact us. :-) elliska

How do I find out how many stories are nominated in a certain categ Posted by JunoMagic May 22, 2006 - 8:02:37 Topic ID# 7041Hi,
I've just got a quick question. How do I find out which and how many
stories are nominated in a certain category?
Not "other fiction", but rather AU, epic, WIP and that kind of thing?
Or will that only be possible once voting season begins?
At the moment it seems rather impossible to find the kind of story I'm
actually interested in reading & reviewing.

At the moment it seems rather impossible to find the kind of story I'm
actually interested in reading & reviewing.

I understand what Junomagic is saying--for example:
1) story type only includes: fixed length, incomplete, non-fiction, other
fiction, poetry
2) author - if one wants to browse, one would presumably not know the author
in advance
3) review status - at this point this qualifier only reveals which ones you
have reviewed vs. which ones you have not reviewed.
--for example, if one wanted to read all AU, short story, lst Age, relating
to Elves, for example. The only way to do that is to search "other fiction"
and you would get all time periods, all types (every length except
fixed-length drabbles), all divisions of characters.
--hence you get hundreds, rather than a dozen or less stories.
If anyone knows how to narrow this search, I would be interested also.

categories that author has chosen that they would like to compete. It's the
third line of every nomination, in the form of
[FIRST CATEGORY CHOICE] : [SECOND CATEGORY CHOICE] : [THIRD CATEGORY CHOICE]
If the author chose Alternate Universe as the genre their story is in, it
will be listed as one of these categories. So if you did a text search of
the webpage you'd find it. I'm not talking about the formal search bar of
the web page, but rather the "find" function that most web browsers have
built in. In most cases you can get this by clicking CONTROL-F (or APPLE-F
in the case of Macs). Then you can type in some words and if those words
appear anywhere on the page it will take you to it. Do the same thing again
and it will take you to the next occurrence of that phrase. This will point
you to all the stories that have Alternate Universe either somewhere in the
summary or in that list of categories.
If you do this, I recommend displaying all of the nominations on one page.
To do this you'lll need to use the drop-down list right above the first
story in your list, with "Per Page: " to the left of it. Since there are
less than 500 stories currently nominated, choosing any number over 500 (or
choosing "all") will display all the stories. If you have a dial-up modem,
though, this may time out before it displays all the stories. If this
happens what I describe above will only find you the Alternate Universe
stories that are displayed on that page, and to find more you'll have to go
to the next page of stories and do the thing over again.
And you can do something similar to find longer stories. The second line of
each story summary is of the form
([STORY TYPE]: [STORY LENGTH]) Rating: [RATING]
So if you want a story with the story length "epic" you could search for
that like you did for "alternate universe". Actually, because the web page
displays the story length inside parentheses it might work better if you
searched for "epic)" so it would *just* pick up those uses of the phrase
that are from the story length. Similarly searching for "novel)" would give
you those stories that have novel chosen as the length.
For WIPs we do have a little more of a high-tech option. ;-) On the page you
get by clicking on "Browse Nominated Stories", you should either see a set
of three drop-down lists called "Story Type", "Author", and "Show Only
Stories I Have Reviewed", or you should see a link called "Show Filter". If
you see the "Show Filter" link click on it, and you'll see the three
drop-down lists I mentioned before. From the "Story Type" list select
"Incomplete" and then click the "Display Selected Nominations" button. That
would show you stories that are WIPs.
I hope all this information helps! And please excuse my longwinded answer to
your straightforward question.

Once nomination season is over, we will do categorizing and put all
the stories into groups. Once that is done, it will be more obvious
how you can see only the AU stories or the stories of a particular
category. But it is impossible to tell you how to do that now, because
there are no categories yet. Once categorization is done and reading

drop down menus to let you search by Story type, main category name
(Elves), Subcategory (Mirkwood elves / drabbles) or author. I hope
that helps--I think it will be obvious once we get things categorized
and all the drop down menus are available.

I intend to add some searching tools, but I haven't gotten around to it
yet.
Last year, we had some searching, but not by this sort of thing, so I
need to add new 'filters' to the browsing page.
I have a couple of things like that to do, including editing the story
lengths, but I've been wanting to play with my kids the last few days,
instead of working on this.
I might be able to do some later tonight. If so, I might have to take
the system off-line for about 15 minutes. I'll try to put up a note (in
the header bar at the top of the page) about 15 minutes before I take
it offline, telling you when it'll go offline. It'll be huge, so you
won't be able to miss it.

Hi,
I wasn't sure whom to inform but I'm not here all of next week. Well
actually starting Saturday onwards. Sorry about this, I know I should have
kept that in mind before signing up as a liaison but a couple of things have
come up at work. I may or may not have regular internet access.
I should be back on sunday, the 4th, so I can continue on then.

Hey all,
I'm taking the site down in at about 11:00 CDT (04:00 GMT) to do some
maintenance.
Marta has asked me to change the story lengths somewhat, and that's
what I'm doing.
Ficlets are being split into two groups.
All stories listed as 'Ficlet' will be changed to 'Other Fixed-Length
Ficlet'
A new 'Ficlet' length is being created that will be all stories less
than 1000 words that are not 'Fixed-Length Ficlets'.
'Drabble Series' is becoming 'Fixed-Length Ficlet Series' to include
all sorts of series of fixed-length ficlets.
I have assumed that most of the Ficlets are actually 'Other
Fixed-Length Ficlets' so I have moved all of them over to that
designation. Authors or Author Liaisons will need to change any
non-fixed-length ficlet to 'Ficlet'.
If you're editing a story, finish editing and don't start a new one.
Don't try to keep an edit window open until I'm finished, especially if
it is a Ficlet or Drabble Series, as the data will become somewhat
corrupted.

Hi!
I'm new to this group and I haven't managed to sort out everything
about the MEFAs yet, but I'm working on it. Two of my stories have
been nominated, but I have not received word about this from anyone in
the MEFA staff. I know about the nomination from the preson who was
kind enough to nominate those stories. Should I have received an e-
mail requesting my approval for the nominations? Or should I send an e-
mail expressing this?
Also, who must I contact about the fact that my yahoo ID and my pen
name are not the same?
Thanks and I hope my beginners questions are't too silly.
Alina.

Hi alina!
I see the two stories that you have nominated and I see that
NancyBrooke is your assigned Author Liaison. Author Liaisons will
send you an 'official' email informing you of your nominations,
asking you to confirm your acceptance and explaining to you how to
complete the nomination. I can see in the database that NancyBrooke
has marked your nominations "No response from the author in 1 week."
That means she has tried to contact you with the email. We have
found that some of these emails have gone to people's spam filters,
so you might check yours. The email was sent to your yahoo account.
Alternately, you can email NancyBrooke at: nb @ nancybrooke.com
(without the spaces) and she will respond with any info you need.
As far as your yahoo id/penname--I have noted that in the notes on
your user. Thanks for letting us know. If your username on the MEFA
site does not show as you would like it, you can just login and
click "Name/Password" to change it as you like.
If you have not yet received information about how to login to the
MEFA site, then just email me at elliska67 @ yahoo.com and I will
send that info to you.
Congrats on your nominations and have fun with the MEFAs!!
