And I can see you've all been busy.

I was away for the weekend and though, I did try to get online, it was an
experience of acute frustration. My laptop appears to have spyware on it,
which I didn't have the means to kill. My Clie hard reset itself, and I
didn't have the means to restore it until I returned home. I could only
connect at appallingly slow speeds (the fastest was 21 kbps, the slowest was
9.6 kbps!) and it kept kicking me off anyway. Everytime I got disconnected,
I had to reboot because the computer refused to communicate with the server
again. Grrrrrrr..

Anyway, computer-wise, I'm very happy to be home. It may take me a bit to
get all caught up. Hopefully, it will be a slow day at work tomorrow.

An alternate LotR universe story – The Uruk-Hai recapture Merry and
Pippin and because of this the story changes. The hobbits suffer many
trials and tribulations as a consequence and are led in a completely
different direction to the original story.

There are frequent appearances by many other LotR characters,
including all of the Fellowship with special attention paid to
Legolas, and also features Éowyn, Faramir and Théoden. There are also
some original characters, including some rather interesting orcs.

Overall this is a story which stars those two, usually underrated
hobbits, Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took, who prove to be
brave, valiant and true and who never lose their sense of right or
their sense of humour.

I saw those! And Gwathyg's. Zimraphel had one as well. They all look
wonderful. Except that some of them are very large. I've shrunk them down a
bit for the web site.

Try to keep them down to a banner or button, not a splash screen. And do
tell me, like you just did, so I'll know they are there.

Hi, I'm Ellbee. I've been writing and reading fanfic for about 3
years, and LotR fanfic for about a year and a half, though I read
much more than I write. The idea of feedback-based awards certainly
has merit, and it apparently works for other forums; I'll be
interested to see how it goes. I've been watching this group for
quite a while, and I think I've got a feel for it. So if you don't

I'm really a bit miffed with our website right now. When I try to upload a
file (any file), I'm told "553 Disk full - please upload later).

This irks me greatly. We have 50MB of space there, and I'm only using less
than 4MB of it. I do not like being told the disk is full.

Right now that means that all of the Races and Places banner pages (I had
separated them by category) are gone. Why? Because I thought maybe if I
removed the original files, it would free up space for uploading the edited
files. No, still a Disk full message. Don't worry, I still have copies of
the files to upload. I just can't upload them right now. I'm not sure how
long those pages will be down. I can't even put up an announcement warning
those pages are down. I can't even replace the big Theoden banner recently
submitted with one I've shrunk, which means it's file size would be smaller.

Really annoyed here. I'd hate to have to move the site for all the headache
it would be. Look at how many places were are affililated with or linked
by. We'd have to let everyone there know or at least put up a "We have
moved" sign at our present location taking them to the new place.

It would be hassle. But then so is being told the disk is full and try
again.

I realized when I made those fields, we might have some cultrual differences
in how to input them. But I started with the American way, since I'm, well,
American (though I do start to wonder when I can't remember how to spell
defense--er defence?). So I entered them m/d/yr.

I see that Nerwen, at least, has entered one d/m/yr. Sorry, hon, but for
sorting purposes (which is the purpose for which I made these fields), I
need them to sort only one way. m/d/yr and d/m/yr will produce May edits
which go to two different places when sorting.

So, please, pretend to be American (unless you already are) when entering
these dates. Heck, the year isn't even important, but since I put it there
by habit, to sort, we still need it, in two-digit format.

Thanks. It's back taking my files now. I left Geocities in the mass exodus
when Yahoo bought it out and wanted to pu tup some egregious TOS. They
changed the TOS but I still left. I was at crosswinds untill they started
letting in pop-ups. Stormpages has been good to me so far, though I do wish
I could upload by FTP (I have to use the web interface). With this server
(agreatserver.com), I have to use FTP and would like actually some of the
other features Stormpages has. Alas, it seems they are full because when I
tried to open the MEFA site there, it directed me to agreatserver.com.

Some of us Americans do. I am an American who has been converted to the
British dating system. Actually I've always written it like 02 June 04.
It just seemed more efficient than wasting that little comma.

Ainae, I will change mine tonight. I put two in the form 02 June or 01
June or whatever the date was.

No, no... argh! Wrong category. The MEFA site appears to be down
right this minute, but if memory serves (though, sadly, it usually
doesn't!), Lord of the Rings or drama would be fine with a secondary
category of hobbits, friendship, what have you. (and a big *blush*

Thank you for all you're doing, and my apologies for flooding the

I think that anyone who coordinates any kind of awards activity
should be nominated for sainthood. If I had any knowledge beyond
rudimentary about websites and webhosting, I would help you, but I am

Thanks. I needed that. I was feeling better, as the site was accepting my

Well, in that case, I've uplaoded 7 more! I had to reupload my three
Lothloriens, as they didn't have the year on them. I also uploaded another
one of those that I had forgotten. The other six are 2 Minas Morgul's and 4
Pelennors. Got a few more captures to go....

Because the site is down again and has been since last night, I have decided

So, members, we need some more nominations! Take a look at the Category
Viability table in the Databases section. Sort it by Viable/Not Viable and
you'll see what subcategories are lacking. There is one main category that
is not viable: Mystery. So think hard. Know of a good mystery story?
Nominate it! We only need one more for viability. And just one more Elves
WIP and Poem will get those two subcategories viable.

Any subcategories that aren't viable will be rolled into a broader category,
most likely.

And Categorizers, be sure to get the Nominations Database up-to-date with
the nominations and your spreadsheets. Once Nomination Season is over and
Check Ballot Season begins, start looking at your 2nd, 3rd choices and
subcategory suggestions. See if there are any good groupings of at least 5
(by at least 2 authors). Start with subcategories, but use the 2nd and 3rd
choices as they could be handy as well. For example, Drama may have 5 with
LOTR 2nd choice, 6 with the Silm. So Drama/LOTR could be a category, as
could Drama/Silm.

Of course then there's a flip site: If LOTR has quite a few with Drama as a
second choice, we may want to look at putting them together. Aw heck, this
is getting complicated. We'll work something out.

Once we've figured all that out, I'll have you e-mail me your spreadsheets.
I'll lump them altogether into one and get to work on the web page that will
list all pertinent info up on the web site. Then I'll throw some ballots
together for checking.

Author contacters, if there is an author listed in the Nominations table
that fits your letters but you haven't contacted yet, please do. Also, if
they'd said yes to only specific stories and there are now more stories
nominated, contact them again. Asking for blanket permission is good. I'll
go through another Author Contact Campaign or two before Check Ballot Season
is over. It was lucrative last time! Once Check Ballot Season ends, any
stories that don't have author permission will have to be removed from this
year's eligibility. They can be eligible again next year.

It's not lost. You just need a little primer on the way these things are
going on. When the catagorizer sees a nomination for their category, they
put it into their spreadsheet and the Nominations table (in the Databases
section of the Yahoo site). That's where Winter Fire is right now. Posted
there on 5/29/04.

At the same time, when an Author Contactor sees an author that falls into
their alotted letters (mine are W-Z, for example), they contact the author.
They put the information in the Author Contact table in the Database.

Cuthalion is not yet in the Author Contact table.

Then, periodically (usually once a day), I go through the Nominations
database and cross reference it with the Author Contact table to see which
stories are 1) nominated and 2) approved by the author. (The dates help this
a great deal!) Once they are approved at both stages (a story might not be
approved for nomination if some part of the form was missing), I put them on
the web site. The ones on the web site are 100% official and in. If you
look at the bottom of the website list of Nominations it says it was updated
yesterday and has 393 of 434. Which means there are 434 in the Nominations
table in the Databases section, but only 393 are 100% official yet.

I hope that clears it up.

Check the Nominations table in the database. If you don't see a story that
you nominated there, give a shout. It may be that the categorizer hasn't
gotten to it yet. We're getting close to the end of Nomination Season so we

As for yours, it still needs a little work. Words and Numbers, don't worry.
You've got "MEFA" and "2004" in there in some form which is good. You've
also got the award title, but not in the correct form: The Nimrodel & (or
and) Amroth Award is how it should be. Others have put "for X Fiction" at
the end and that's okay, too.

So, just add a "The" and an "Award" to that and I'll grab it and put it on
the web site.

I think that might have something to do with the
categories. Since there are several categorizers and
we all work on different updating schedules, sometimes
some categories are updated more quickly than others.
Those are both in Romance category, right?

No problem. As I've said beofre, I won't monkey with the sizes on the Yahoo

I have thought about this. I would like something for them. Being that I'm

It's not lost. You just need a little primer on the way these things are
going on. When the catagorizer sees a nomination for their category, they
put it into their spreadsheet and the Nominations table (in the Databases
section of the Yahoo site). That's where Winter Fire is right now. Posted
there on 5/29/04.

At the same time, when an Author Contactor sees an author that falls into
their alotted letters (mine are W-Z, for example), they contact the author.
They put the information in the Author Contact table in the Database.

Cuthalion is not yet in the Author Contact table.

Then, periodically (usually once a day), I go through the Nominations
database and cross reference it with the Author Contact table to see which
stories are 1) nominated and 2) approved by the author. (The dates help this
a great deal!) Once they are approved at both stages (a story might not be
approved for nomination if some part of the form was missing), I put them on
the web site. The ones on the web site are 100% official and in. If you
look at the bottom of the website list of Nominations it says it was updated
yesterday and has 393 of 434. Which means there are 434 in the Nominations
table in the Databases section, but only 393 are 100% official yet.

I hope that clears it up.

Check the Nominations table in the database. If you don't see a story that
you nominated there, give a shout. It may be that the categorizer hasn't
gotten to it yet. We're getting close to the end of Nomination Season so we
need to get these caught up if they're not.

As for yours, it still needs a little work. Words and Numbers, don't worry.
You've got "MEFA" and "2004" in there in some form which is good. You've
also got the award title, but not in the correct form: The Nimrodel & (or
and) Amroth Award is how it should be. Others have put "for X Fiction" at
the end and that's okay, too.

So, just add a "The" and an "Award" to that and I'll grab it and put it on
the web site.

We still have one week to nominate stories. Take a look at the Category
Viability table and see if you can't think of any good stories to fit those
non-viable categories. I'm espically hoping we can find one more mystery (or
I have a story that might be moved to that category as it is the nominator's
2nd choice for category anyway). It's a main category and we want to see it

Don't worry if you have a story you want to nominate and it doesn't fit one
of those non-viable categories. We'll be ablet o move them around as need
be, or leave them right in the default main category. Nominate anything you
think is worthy.

And, consider helping the Staff. If you know one of the authors who has not
given us approval yet, contact them for us and see if you can get their
permission. Just forward their answer to me if you get one. We'd hate to
drop stories from the nominations just because we never got an answer from
an author. The deadline for author approval is the end of Check Ballot
Season: June 30th.

Also, if you nominated a story that's not on the web site yet, do the
following:
1) check the Nominations database. Is it in there?
a. if not, give a polite shout out here on the list
b. if yes, but the Staff Approval column is marked No, check the
reason. We may be missing a piece of information. If it is
marked No with no reason, give a polite shout-out here on the list
2) check the Author Approval database
a. if the author has approved it, wait one day. If it doesn't show
up then on the web site, let me know.
b. if the author has declined it, well, just let it go.
c. if the author hasn't replied yet, see the above paragraph about
helping the Staff
d. if the author isn't listed, give a polite shout-out on the list
here and see the above paragraph about helping the Staff.

Author contactors, you might want to contact your non-replying authors thus
far and let them know of the deadline. It might encourage them to answer.

Mine will be caught up after this evening. (Silm, Crossovers, Lord of
the Rings) I've got about 5-6 nominations that have come in over the

I think once their story is on the web list of Nominations (thus,
offically approved), they can choose any one they want. They may
want to check back later though to see if one they like better has

Well if we can't reach her by the end of the month, her story can still be

And remember folks, when adding stories to the databse...
1) Use this format for the date: 6/11/04 (so that they are uniform and
searchable)
2) Put the date in that you enter them, not the date they were nominated. I
just found osme new 6/9's (in this format 06-09-04, so I don't know if they
were in there before and just not sorted along with the other sor if they
were just entered today by a different date).

With 450+ stories, I want to be able to find the new additions easily so I
can add them to the web site without scrounging through the whole list.

That was me. I added new entries in the last hour or so. I had realized that I put the wrong date in there and I was just searching through the database to change them. Sorry about that.

And remember folks, when adding stories to the databse...
1) Use this format for the date: 6/11/04 (so that they are uniform and
searchable)
2) Put the date in that you enter them, not the date they were nominated. I
just found osme new 6/9's (in this format 06-09-04, so I don't know if they
were in there before and just not sorted along with the other sor if they
were just entered today by a different date).

With 450+ stories, I want to be able to find the new additions easily so I
can add them to the web site without scrounging through the whole list.
