There is one new rule for the 2005 MEFAs. All Nominations must be
stories on my infamous spreadsheet. The spreadsheet was started when I
first found LOTR fanfiction and it has grown into an enormous size of
hundreds of stories I'd like to read. So if you nominate them, I'll
get them read. ;-)

You can find the spreadsheet in the Files section, be sure to look at
both the Complete and WIP worksheets.

It's the beginning of nomination season and I thought I'd start it off
with a big THANK YOU to Ainae. You've worked really hard for all of us
(the understatement of the year, I know), and I wanted to tell you
thanks. You've survived the first year, and this one will be even
easier and more fun, I think. :-)

serioulsy can we onlu nominate stories that appear on that? I'm

Okay, by now, you should have received your login information. If you
didn't, e-mail me privately. And we'll get it to you. We had 9 delivery
failures thus far.

Also, we saw two Bridiliel's in the list. Are there really two of you?
Or is this just one person with two memberships? (We only sent out one
password until we clear this up.)

We've already got nominations pouring in! I used my first one to come
up with a set of instructions. I've posted them to the website:
http://home.earthlink.net/mefa/nominst.html.

When going through my first nomination, I noted some changes I'd like
to make to which fields are mandatory and which aren't. For now,
consider the instructions correct, but, until the *'s go away on the
Submit Story form, go ahead and set them to something so that the
nomination will get accepted. (That's basically for Category choices,
as we said we'd leave them to authors. If you're the author, they are
mamandatory!)

We're going to work on getting a daily digest of completed nominations
posted to the list so we can all see what stories have been nominated.

I've also put a link to the MEFA2005 site on the website and in th
Links section of the Yahoo site. Here's the link:
http://gabrielle.sytes.net/MEFA2005 (and note that that is case-
sensitive).

Okay, that's it for the night. I've got to call it quits. Happy

Hey all,

Ainaechoiriel's instructions are mostly complete, but I have a few to
add, and can't put
them on her website (yet!).

1) You shouldn't see the 'Complete' box at the bottom of the new
story form. Only author
Liaisons can see this box, and they'll have to check it for you, even
if you're the author.
Ainae saw the box, because she's a Liaison.

2) If you're nominating a non-member's story, then you'll have to add
the user, following
the link on the nomination page. Please check the author list
carefully. I just noticed that
_chibimelody_ is sorting at the end of the author list, for example.
(You can change that, if
you want, _chibimelody_, by editing your 'name'. We can change it
back later.) I should
make a browse members page, to make it easier to check that list, but
there isn't one right
now.

3) If your name is not the one you've posted stories as, you should
change it, so people
can find it. If you've posted stories under two names, just create an
author with the second
name, and let Ainae know. The second name can be an author, but won't
be activated for
voting. (Only one person per email account, so you'll need two, or
put in a fake one and
send us an email.)

4) The site lists all nominated stories (Browse Stories), so check it
before nominating a new
one.

5) You don't have to wait to start entering reviews. Any reviews
entered for a story will
follow that story throughout the nomination process, and will go with
it when it assigned
to a category. Nobody (except the admins) can read your reviews,
until both A) you mark
them as 'Final' and B) Voting season starts.

6) If you find anything not working correctly, please send me an
email (anthony _AT_
alumni _DOT_ rice _DOT_ edu). I've tried to get it all working
correctly, and I believe that it
does, but it is impossible to test everything, and you will
undoubtedly try all possible
combinations before we're done.

I'll try to smooth out the rough edges over time.

BTW, 44 stories by 25 authors as of this posting!

from "Drabble" to "Story"), and I've already submitted the nomination,
how do I go about fixing that. Lyllyn's "Offerings" should be a story,
not a drabble.

not the type "essay".

As what should an essay be nominated ?

Er, I've done the same thing. Jocelyn's "Elven Song" should be a novel
rather than a drabble.

I think I might know how we messed up, too. If you have to enter a
completely new author, after you go through that process and end up
back at the place where you enter all the info for the story you're
submitting, it resets whatever you had for story type and story
length. Which is not a big problem, it just means you have to remember
to go back and set it to novel or novella or whatever it was supposed
to be before you entered a new author.

Anyway, the nomination for Jocelyn's "Elven Song" is wrong as far as
length and type are concerned. How do I fix this?

Beautiful work on the automated website! My compliments go out to
everyone who was involved in the creation, organization, coding, etc.

In the nomination form there is a field for suggested subcategories... I suppose I should have paid more attention to the previous emails, because I'm wondering exactly what's supposed to go in there. I've searched the old MEFA site but I couldn't find the answer.

Any help would be welcomed.

And there are two entries where somehow, I didn't set the author's
drop-down correctly and ended up with the first name on the list. So
most definitely, I need to change those two...

how are we keeping track of what was nominated last year and therefore
ineligible this year?

I know the obvious is to check the list on the website, but is that
something that will be done manually at some point or will the system
reject a duplicate title?

I can fix it as an Administrator.

Also, I forgot to add, don't just check this year's nominees. Check the
website or YahooGroup (Databases) to see if the story was nominated last
year. Those stories (except those that were WiPs but are now complete)
can't be nominated again.

Subcategories is pretty open. Ones we KNOW will be there are Drabble,
Poetry, and Incomplete. Everything else is a toss up. You can enter a
place, like Gondor, or Mirkwood, enter another category (like Humor or
Romance), enter something else about it like friendship, or the time
setting, such as 1st Age. They're just suggestions and the staff will use
them to make viable subcategores out of the huge main categories.

For now, we check manually. Easiest way seems to browse by Author for
what's nominated this year. As for last year, we can still see the 2004
nominations on the website and in the Databases at the Yahoo site.

Anthony, were we keeping a list of last year's stories on the MEFA2005 site?
Anway to reject a duplicate nomination this year? If not, we'll live. This
site is already so much easier than last year.

yahoo dot com), but accidentally entered the story title for the email

Hey guys,

I was checking the list of stories nominated so far, and I caught two
entries that had also been nominated last year. One was nominated as a
complete story last year, and is still complete this year; the other
was a WIP last year, and is still a WIP this year. I mentioned this to
Ainae in IM and she's taken care of it, but she did ask me to post a
little reminder here.

Remember that stories can be nominated a maximum of two times: once as
a WIP, and again as a complete story. So if it was nominated as a
complete story last year, it's not eligible to be nominated again this
year. If it was a WIP last year, it's only eligible if it's now
complete; if it's still a WIP, it's not eligible again.

Responses to several items.

First, you are all welcome. I enjoy doing this sort of thing, and when
Angela (Elana) was copying and pasting those votes into M$ Word for the
counting, and said 'Can you do something to make this easier next
year?' ... Well, here we are, and it is running.

No, we don't have a list of last year's nominations on the site. You'll
have to search last year's site for them.

I can and will make changes to the site as we go along. First, I make
them on my PowerBook, excuse me ... development server, then update
them to the production server when I'm happy with them (and when I have
time).

That in mind, I may say "I've fixed problem A," but it may not be
available to you yet.

When there is a change, sometimes we'll add some text. The way the
system works, most of the text you see is in a separate language file.
If you see anything like S_USER_NAME, with all caps and underscores, it
means you need to reload the language file (link at center top of every
page). If it doesn't go away, send me the URL and the code, and tell me
what you think it ought to say, and I'll fix it.

I've re-worked the story nomination form to reduce or eliminate most of
the issues noted in today's emails. This has been uploaded.

There are some other issues, like the random number generator wasn't
working, so all the authors have been assigned to one Liaison! We'll
move some around. I tried to fix it, but it appears the fix isn't
working either.

Tidbits from the database:
216 unique story URLs (226 story IDs) (some mistakes in learning curve?)
94 unique authors
~60 authors are not MEFA members (yet)
11 unique nominators

I'm known as Elena Tiriel, and I've joined because I have an abiding
interest in drabbles as an art form. I wish to read all the drabbles I can
find and nominate the ones that touch me in some way. (Of course, I'll be
reading other types of stories, as well.)

I encountered a bit of a problem on the web site today: when I try to list
all the stories that have been nominated so far, and then select the
category "Drabbles", it sends me back to the login screen. This happened a
couple of times, so it wasn't a one-time anomaly. If you need any details,
let me know and I'll try to duplicate exactly what I did.

I just tried using the drabble filter, and it worked for me. I have a
Mac, I use Mozilla 1.0 because I'm a terminal OS-9er who can't afford
an upgrade.

I've used the other filters at least once, and haven't had a problem.
If you need site testers who can be asked to go do X and see if it
crashes, let me know.

Hello,
Since my pen name and my Yahoo Groups ID are not the same, the site has me
listed twice in the author list--as "branwyn" (my pen name) and as
"branwyn_lady" (my Yahoo Groups User ID since someone else had already taken
"branwyn").
Is there a way to merge back into one person under my pen name?

it has been set up a third way here ... As Branwyn asked: Is there a
way to make my id here match my reg. ID?

(And I'm glad to see other people are having problems finding where
the nominated stories were because I had been looking throught the
'final nominations for 2004' and stories weren't listed there that
apparently were nominated. Thanks to Aine for pointing me in the
right direction...)

You *can* change how your name displays:

1. Once logged into the MEFA2005 website, click "User Info".
2. Change the "nickname" field to what you want displayed.
3. Click the "save" button.

This won't change the name you use to log in; that's your "user name".
You can change them both to the same thing if you like, but just
changing the nickname only changes what other people see on the
website.

So for example, my user name is aure_enteluva but my nickname is
Marta. When I log in I have to use aure_enteluva, but whenever I
nominate a story, the author's name is "Marta". Clear as mud? ^¿^

Branwyn's problem is a tad more complicated: she actually has two
id's, and I think she wants to have everything under one id. Sorry,
Branwyn, I don't know how to do that one. But I'm sure Ainae or

Thanks much! I did notice that on the author list there are other
duplicates--Elena Tiriel is on there twice along with a few others. I

A. Nomination Season: April 1st through May 15th

B. Check Ballot Season: May 16th through May 31st
this is one I'm having a bit of trouble with what do you mean by
ballot check
C. Reading Season: June 1st through August 15th
this seems self explanitory
D. Voting Season: August 16th through September 30th

E. FanArt Season: October 1st through October 15th

F. Awards Results: Announced by October 15th

Right. Stories are nominated during this period.

This is mainly an administrative period. The admins will put together
a ballot, listing the story, author, url, and summary. Then people
will proof them to make sure everything's right.

Interestingly, you can actually vote during reading season. Last year,
all the votes had to be posts to this Yahoo group; this year you can
make them at any time through the website, they just aren't visible to
any other members until voting season.

Just to clarify - we have a fanart competition to design the awards
banners. People can upload banners into the files section of the Yahoo
group at any point; FanArt Season is when we have polls to decide
which of these will be the actual banner.

Let's say there are five banners submitted for the "The Lothlorien
Awards". We have a poll where everyone can vote for their favourite
banner. The winner becomes the official banner for that award; the
story that wins that award gets to use it. (I think "The Lothlorien
Award" is first prize for Elves, though maybe I'm misremembering; if
I'm correct, the story nominated in "Elves" that gets the most votes
will win the "Lothlorien Award", and so will get to win the banner
that wins the poll for "The Lothlorien Awards".

Hey all,

This is nothing fatal, but Becky noticed that if there's a form error,
the suggested categories get reset to 'no category selected.'

I'll try to fix this soon, but until I do, please know that you need to
reselect the categories if you have a form error.

Also, if you remember getting an error, please check your nomination
and send one of the author liaisons the list if there's a problem
(Thundera, Kirra, and Ainae). All the Liaisons can make the necessary
changes. If you're the author of the story, you can edit it yourself.

About the multiple login bit, choose one login that you want to use for
this site, set the Nickname (as correctly noted by Marta, Thanks!) to
your desired name, and send mefaadmin an email with the other names.
She can delete the others from the list.

If you need two names, because of pseudonyms, be sure to let us know,
and we'll just make sure you can only vote with one login!

I'll try to create a user list that's easier to use than the popup
menu, for browsing names. The admin can already do this, so hopefully I
can do it without too much trouble. No promises how soon it'll be,
though!

Elena Tiriel, I don't understand why it kicks you back out to the main
screen. What OS and browser versions are you using? I know that FireFox
works pretty well.

Branwyn, I've merged your two accounts, under the one that had a story
nominated. I sent your login info to you, just to be sure. I have
changed the other one, and will delete it once I've worked on that user
list (and added number of stories from the database, so I can be sure
I'm not deleting a user who has stories!).

Yeah, double drabbles or drabble serials can still be in the Drabble
subcategories. They were last year and so they are this year. I have a two

Check Ballots is a term borrowed from the ASC Awards (where I borrowed this
whole system). Basically, they are ballots that we check for accuracy.
Errors are caught and fixed. Maybe a story was put in the wrong category or
had a wrong title or whatever. We fix them. There are four check ballots
for each category so hopefully by the fourth check ballot, we'll see that
they are down to 0 errors. Then that tells us the Ballots for Voting Season
will be accurate.

Hello all,

There have been enough problems with this, that I've enabled nominators
to edit stories for one day after they were created.

You should see an edit link on the 'overview' page (page=index) under
the list of stories you've nominated. This link will go away 1 day
after you've nominated the story.

I set the creationdate of all stories that had been nominated
previously to 2004-04-04 00:00:00, so you have until the end of Monday
to go back and fix things on stories you've already nominated.

I don't know about Bridiliel/Bridilliel. FWIW, I've only met the one here.

I also noticed there's Elena Tiriel and ElenaTiriel. I *do* know
there's only one of her ;-)

And finally, I can't find Elvenesse on the list, but when I tried to
add her I was told she was already on the list of authors. Has anyone
else encountered this problem?

I had the same problem when I tried to nominate one of Sphinx's stories. Sphinx is listed under just_sphinx, but I didn't see that on the pull down menu, so I tried to add the author "Sphinx." It told me that someone already had that user name, at which point I did a more careful search of the menu and found the name. The problem is probably that Elvenesse is listed by Yahoo identity, not that particular author name.

Yeah, sorry about that. I wasn't around yesterday to deal with MEFA things,
but that's one of the things I'll try to work out, beginning today. I'd

anything before... squeeeee!) *ahem*, as well as work out with Anthony why I
can't see the drabble nomination list (maybe that problem went away

Along the same lines, we do still have to get author permission for
stories to compete, and have the authors tell us how they want us to
categorize their stories. Should we not wait to write up our reviews
until we know that all the stories in the database have been given
permission to compete? I assume we'd need to wait until check ballot
season, unless we already have forwarded permission from the authors
to the MEFAdministrator and so know that we're ok to review
competitively.

Speaking of which, if we do have such permission, do we just
copy-paste the e-mail into the proper slot ourselves (or for our own
stories, just write in "Yes")?

Your "nickname" is what appears in bold in the list and in the author drop
down list, I believe. Your "username" is what you log in with. You can
edit either.

You can also Search the user list by e-mail (or at least I can) so you might
find people that way. I found Elvenesse under this nickname:

It doesn't because no one can see those reviews but you. Until Voting
Season. It's just a way to help you "vote early" as I've been advocating
since last year. Last year, I just suggested everyone write their reviews
while their memory of the story is fresh and keep them on their hard drive
until Voting Season. The MEFA2005 website even make it easier. You won't
have to copy and paste later in Voting Season. Just change the status from
Draft or Tentative to Final.

That is one way to review. I do a combo of both. I'll write a review based
on my fresh memory of the, but if I really liked a previously-read story
better, I'll go back and write more for it, if necessary.

I would think that if Nomination Season goes by without an author's
permission, the nomination in question would be withdrawn, and the reviews
would go away with the story. You might want to keep a copy of your reviews
still, on your hard drive, in case a story is withdrawn, but you still want
to give the feedback to the author.

You don't have to "vote early". The option to leave a review is just there
to use whenever you are ready. And you can edit it when it's set as Draft
or Tentative.

Same thing applies as before, if you get permission (and you're not an
Author Liaison), forward it to me. You can paste it in there. The Author
Liaison then assigned can pick up from there and get the catagories from the
author, etc. And then mark the nomination Complete. As for your own
stories, just put "Self-nominated" in there, then we'll know your category
selections, etc., are set and the story can be marked Complete.

This reminded me of a question I had. Is it at all feasible to have
the website display how long (how many characters) these reviews are?
It would be nice to be able to have this information available through
the website, but I'm not sure how difficult it would be. I assume
we're already calculating the character counts at some point since the
website is counting the votes, but I'm not sure when it does this, so
if what I'm requesting is too difficult, that's fine, too.

Hey all,

I've read through the latest comments. Your feedback is really helping
me see how to make the site work better.

Author Liaisons have been assigned, and should be able to begin sending
emails to the (especially non-MEFA) authors soon.

I have created (not installed yet) a Member/Author List, for all users.
Please use this to search for authors to avoid duplicates. The search
form searches Nicknames and the first part of email addresses (before
the @).

Raksha, Nomination Incomplete is shown until the Author Liaisons get
your permission and confirmation that all the details are correct. When
you give that permission, and have checked the data, the Author Liaison
will check a box you can't see, and it will change to complete. You can
edit the story and make a note that you have checked the data and give
your permission at the bottom of the form, and send an email to your
liaison, once she lets you know who she is, telling her you approve,
and she can check your stories as complete. Once it's marked complete,
you won't be able to edit it, so check it carefully before approving
it.

Marta, I added (not installed yet) a line to the 'Review Saved' note
that comes up at the top of the overview page after you save a review
(story or author). The note tells you how many valid characters, and
what your score for that review are. If desired, I could have it send
the entire review. For me, clicking the 'back' button takes me back to
the form, and I can continue editing with no ill effects (Safari on
MacOS X Panther). YMMV.

Also, there have been comments about the Seasons. Alongside the 'Reload
Language File' link at the top, are some codes that identify which
seasons are active now.

Codes are:
Nom: Nomination
CB: Check Ballots
Vot: Voting
Rev: Reviewing
AuthRev: Author Reviewing
FAN: Fan Art Nomination
FAV: Fan Art Voting
Count: Counting

For the MEFA2005 site, Reviewing is when you may enter reviews for
stories. They aren't visible until Voting season starts AND they are
final.

Author Reviews can't be done until after Check Ballots season, because
they are linked to the award categories, and that isn't set until Check
Ballots is over.

They arent' complete until the Author Liaison marks them complete, and that
means not just author permission, but author deciding on Categories and
such. And we're waiting on and edit of the Author Approval e-mail. We
Author Liaison's see a checkbox at the bottom of the Submit a Story form
that nominators don't see. That's the Complete checkbox. And once we get
moving, we'll get those that are Complete marked so.

Just a little patience. This is a new system to us. Anthony and I had some
very long nights the last two weeks before we opened. We'll get the
wrinkles ironed out.

We'd have to ask Anthony that. I know it will count the votes in the end.
Whether they can be shown all along.... That made me decide to keep the
votes in my website still, so I could see them comparatively as well as
already have them pasted in as Drafts.

Is there a limit to the number of nominations I can make for each
category? Say there are two stories that I think might fit the same
category, is it all right to nominate both?

Subcategories is pretty open. Ones we KNOW will be there are Drabble,
Poetry, and Incomplete. Everything else is a toss up. You can enter a
place, like Gondor, or Mirkwood, enter another category (like Humor or
Romance), enter something else about it like friendship, or the time
setting, such as 1st Age. They're just suggestions and the staff will use
them to make viable subcategores out of the huge main categories.

There was no limit last year, and given that between us, Marta and I
must've nominated about 200 stories already (not kidding!), I think
it's safe to say that no one is concerned about how many stories you
nominate for any given category or combination of categories. Look at
it this way: you just provide a field of competition ready-made!

Hi all.

Just a question that has been troubling me: what's the difference
between a short story and a vignette?

This has been explained to me before, but I still don't get it. I
search through the site's FAQ and couldn't find any info on this, so if
one of you could clarify this for me, I'd be most thankful.

A vignette is just one scene. No more. As such, it generally is short, but
it's a particular format of short story.

A short story may have several scenes but still be only 25,00 wors or so.

My story Immortal, is almost a vignette. But I stuck a little tag scene on
at the end, using a different POV than the rest of the story. Thus it is
not a vignette. My story, Namesake, on the other hand is only one scene and
a very short scene at that. It is a vignette.

Thanks! I had seen that you two had nominated a lot of stories, and
actually was looking at them to see if they were all different
catagories, or if some duplicated, but with all of the main
categories and subcategories I got lost, and said to myself "Just
ask!" You both have some great choices btw!

Sub-categories don't work for me either. I can view by a main
category but if I click on the drop down box for sub-categories, it
just shows the main category and nothing else.

Yes, I've been very relieved to see someone else's name pop up as the
nominator's name beside my own. And I check the list every time before
I sit down to enter more nominations, so I *know* that I'm not
duplicating.

Yes, I agree with Dwim. I have to admit feeling a bit like a kid in a
candy store, only it's like I'm showing a friend all the best sweets
to taste. But there's still that feeling of lots of good things to
try. (I've already discovered two stories I like that I hadn't read
before.)

Can a series of vignettes be nominated in the vignette category? I
know of several pieces where you might have four or five different
perspectives on the same moment, or several snapshots from someone's
life. (I'm thinking of Ellisande's "Gathering the Pieces", which had
seven moments in Denethor's life, from Finduilas's POV. More than one
scene, but each of them was definitely a vignette in its own right. In
structure these pieces are a lot like a drabble series.

At least one or two of you have mentioned problems with the filters
'dumping back to the login page'.

I'm not sure what's happening, because they work great for me.

If you have a problem with the site that seems to be an 'it doesn't
work right' issue, like this, could you please include your:

Operating System (Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2000, WinXP, MacOS8/9, MacOS
X, or other)
Browser name/version (IE5, IE6, Netscape, AOL, Firefox, Safari)

I can't test all these combinations, but I can tell you that the site
is known to work with:

MacOS X, Safari/Firefox
WinXP, IE/Firefox

If the problem is 'I would rather it do This than That', then just send
it on, and don't bother with the OS/Browser.

If you haven't tried it, you should try Firefox, the browser product of
Mozilla.org, and a descendent of Netscape. Firefox is one of the best
browsers out there, with good compliance to the various standards. IE
hasn't been maintained very well lately, with most of the 'updates'
being simply fixes for security holes.

Firefox has a very good built-in pop-up blocker. You almost never see
pop-up ads with it, and there are lots of really cool extensions,
including one that will take a 'mailto:' link, and use it to open up a
new mail message in Yahoo! Mail, and fill out the To:, Subject:, and
Body: fields, if they are specified in the link.

Also, you'll love the 'Tabbed Browsing' feature. You can
ctrl-shift-click on chapters 2, 3, and 4 of a story, and they'll be
loading in the background (within your current window) while you're
reading chapter 1. Especially useful for when you're taking a laptop
out away from your internet connection, and want to have something to
read on the road.

Subcategories haven't been assigned yet, but the Main Category is
treated as one of the subcategories. The subcategories list is limited
to those subcategories that have been created off that main category

They would have to be a series and not a five-part story. And remember that
Vignette is only a subcategory. Otherwise we don't categorize by length so
it's really not all that big of a deal. But anyway, like a dbrabble series

same. Can the scenes stand alone but be related to each other? Or are they
five parts of one story?

Perhaps it's because subcategories aren't set yet. I mean there are only

Authors will be getting e-mails from Author Liaisons soon. As some
of you are Members, you might wonder why you need an Author Liaison.
Well, Author Liaisons and Admins are the only ones who can mark
stories Complete.

Now, i've already mentioned that authors who nomiante their own
stories can put "self-nominated" in the author permission space. We
can then assume taht you chose the right top 3 Category choices,
etc. So Author Admins can easily mark your nominations Complete.

But what about Author/Members whose storeis were nominated by
others? It would be inefficient for you to wait until the Author
Liaison write to you and for you to reply in e-mail which categories
you would want etc. You're a member. You can just log in and look
at your stories and edit as necessary. So how will the Author
Liaison know?

How about this: Author Liaisons will e-mail you with the same form
letter as everyone else. (Sorry, but really it is a lot easier
adminstratively to use a form letter.) You can go in and edit your
story information. Then reply to your Author Liaison, saying, "I
approve of this nomination and all its settings."

The Author Liaison can then copy that permission into the Author
Permission spot (or the Author can) and mark the nomination Complete.

Will that work for all of you?

Remember that to be complete a nomination must have 3 choices for
categories. I've seen some with only 1 or 2. What if the top choice
turns out to not be valid? What if the 2nd cohice does? We'd have to
know where to put it.

So please, as you check your stories (or your assigned authors'
stories), please make sure there are 3 category choices.

I think that's what is the problem for me, Aine. I can search a list
for the main category, but if I want to cut it down into
sub-categories it doesn't work. But now I know, it won't. No worries

I absolutely agree with you that Firefox is a vastly superior browser to IE.
And thank you for the ctrl-shift-click tip, I've only known about the
right-click/Open-Link-in-New-Tab method. Tabbed browsing is incredibly
valuable.

Unfortunately, I'm using Firefox 1.0.1 under Windows 2000 (sent you the
details last night) and am experiencing the problem with the "Drabbles"
filter sending me back to the login page.

A question: do you store the login info in a cookie? Because I don't allow
cookies. Is that possibly the problem?

FYI, the search term searches the Author Name, Story Title, and Story
Summary. It should be on all users' browse stories pages.

All searches are case insensitive.

We had a glitch that caused some stories to lose their category choices.
Some lost 1, some lost 2 and some lost 3. Usually what happened is the one
on the top went away and the others moved up.

So, let's begin here: Authors who are members and can read this, check your
stories. You can change the categories, even on Completed nominations.

Author Liaisons, check the stories assigned to you. The only stories
effected should be ones that were edited within the last day. I noticed
that some of the effected stories had 3 categories when I sent my e-mails,
so unless the author wanted the categories different, I can use my Sent
Items to set them back to what they were. If you even clicked Edit Data and
didn't make a change at all, the categories probably still got dropped.

Do that much and we'll see where that leaves us. We may have to go back to
Authors or Nominators for fixes.

The glitch, by the way, is fixed. It shouldn't happen again.

Will this cause a problem? As we nominate, should we be checking to
make sure that no one has submitted the same story, or will it be easy
enough to just delete forms when doing check-ballots and/or contacting

The nominator should look first. You can use the Search feature in Browse
Stories to look for the title. If you see it and see that it's by the same
author (there are different stories with the same title), don't nominate it.

If you should happen to miss it, hopefully, the Author Liaison will catch
it. I caught a duplicate earlier today. Ideally then the later nomination
should be withdrawn. Unless the Liaison has already e-mailed the Author
with the other nomination's info. We don't want to confuse an author too
much.

If Liaison's can't withdraw a nomination, they should e-mail me with the
name of the story and the nominator so I can withdraw the right one.

Well, I think an non-fiction piece can be about elves or men as well,
so the third category for races/places might apply as well.

I am just wondering where you would leave essays about things like
swords. Like for example an essay/article about the blades of
Westernesse. (That would be: Silmarillion maybe LOTR, Non-fiction, and
races/places: men or hobbits)

Hmm, I am not sure how you can run an non-fictional story with
fiction. If it is an essay about an event like a battle.. I wasn't
around last year, so which non-fiction pieces ran with the fictional
stories?

So a category is only viable if there are 20+ entries? (If I'm
reading 'the rules' correctly) That's an awful lot to expect of
non-fiction but I don't think they should be lumped in with the
fictions.

I know it probably should be discussed in a post-mortem, but can't it
be that the non-fiction groups don't need as many submissions?
Because I doubt there would ever be 20 essays eligible in a single
year and yet there are some excellent/deserving non-fiction articles
that should be awarded.
